Went to Blue C after work today with Oren. It was actually pretty bad. Most of the conveyor belt was empty and the things I did have didn't taste great. Bleh, oh well.

I played PP for the evening. I have come up with many many brilliant baseball-related rename ideas for ships. See, the standard name scheme for ships is to be an adjective and a fish, like "Charming Tigerfish" or "Famous Ling" or "Aggressive Pickerel" or "Unique Carp" or whatever. They have a list of "standard" fish names on the PP wiki page here. Now, keep in mind, I thought up the first few of these without even consulting that list for inspiration:

Tim Salmon
Sid Bream
Randy Bass
Connie Mackerel
Catfish Hunter
Preacher Roe
Florida Marlin
Chicago Chub
Detroit Tigerfish
Anaheim Angelfish
Tampa Bay Devil Ray
Cincinnati Redfish
Boston Red Sockeye
St. Louis Cardinalfish
Colorado Rockfish
Chicago Whitefish

And then there were some that'd be kind of pushing it, like the Nomar Gar (ciaparra), the Granny Hamnerhead, the Calvin Pickerel (Pickering), Harvey Haddock (Haddix), Carlos Silverside (Silva), Johnny Tench or Kevin Tench (for Bench and Mench, respectively), or Placido Polanco could go either way for a Plaice or a Pollack... and then there's Steve Trout and Brandon Puffer.

Yes, I'm a dork. Hmm, I need to go hunt down some shanghais for the Baseball Carp first, I think, though.

Oren and Carl and I went to Mashiko for the omakase (chef's choice dinner) tonight. It ruled. I have finally gotten back at Carl for Kevin's kaiseki birthday dinner in April.

Seriously, though, if you're going to spend $55 and 2.5 hours at a Japanese restaurant, you might as well do something like this. Like last time, I took notes on the courses we got. We specifically said "No oysters or mussels, please", so these were the courses:

1. Rockfish sashimi with tobiko and sunamono in ponzu sauce
2. Tako, um, "suviche"? I don't know what that is, it was basically essentially octopus salsa. I'm not kidding.
3. Hawaiian albacore tuna tataki with green onions and shiso
4. Nigiri Sushi -- Bluefin tuna, Aji, and Geoduck.
5. Mushroom sautee
6. Chiai - some sort of tuna-like steak, grilled in spicy sesame sauce
7. Tempura shiso with fish on top and a three layer thing with tako, ankimo, and cucumber
8. "Dessert roll" with eel, avocado, kabocha, egg, etc.
9. We ordered "dessert", well, I ordered plum wine sherbet and Carl ordered a nigori sake called Hitori Musume because the name amused him.

The octopus salsa was actually tasty, but weird. The albacore tuna tataki was FANTASTIC. And oddly, the Aji nigiri sushi, which is sort of like mackerel, and I hate mackerel, was actually really good - a function of both the fish, the sauce on top, and a shiso leaf between the rice and fish, maybe. The mushroom sautee stuff was just that -- mushrooms stir-fried. It wasn't bad, but sort of a waste of a dish, and I'd rather have had something else that wasn't boring. Chiai was fabulous, like chunks of spicy tuna steak. The dessert roll reminded me of the snowflake roll I got last week, and the plum wine sherbet was just great again.

I'm not sure what I would have rated as my absolute favorite thing. Probly the tuna steak and the albacore tataki.

Anyway, it is the last day of the year. I honestly don't know what I'll end up doing tonight -- sorry to those throwing parties, but my first priority is to spend it with Carl since he's my best friend and all, so I'm going to defer to his expert opinion.

I did write another song, but it isn't to new music. I will go post that now too and further clog your friends page.

Bloody hell, can't sleep.

Not much to report anyway. Last night was volleyball. There were three people I'd never seen before there, though I got the impression two were oldtime vball players from the gym that were visiting for the holidays. The third was a guy who had less arm strength than ME, and I'm really not making that up. I had a pretty damn good evening playing, though.

My alarm didn't go off this morning, so I was severely late to work. I stayed until fairly late, then went to Blue C for dinner with [profile] tangerinpenguin who I hadn't seen in a while. After dinner I came home, found out that all the stores I had thought of going to were closed by then, so I ended up trekking down to [personal profile] oren's place and hung out with him and [profile] zml for an hour or two. I was looking at more maps of Japanese baseball stadiums, and the guys were watching car racing on TV and stuff.

I wanted to be done with my traveling-sportswriter script by the time [profile] dvarin got to town, but oh well. I *do* have all of the 2006 NPB season schedule slurped from their website and a Perl script done that can format it in any way I desire, so maybe I'll put the translated schedules online sometime -- but still, I want to figure out my optimal travel path. Oh well. Writing graph algorithms in Perl is sort of fun. I'm doing it with a double hash table.

Tomorrow afternoon I get to pick up Carl from the airport though, and he'll be here for the whole newyeary weekend, and how can I possibly be stressed or sad when I'll have my best friend around for a day or two? Yay.
dr4b: (tran iidx)
I woke up this morning with a horrible stabbing pain between my shoulders, and it's persisted all day -- something between my left arm and the middle of my back, really. Every time I move or twist my back, or even breathe deeply, etc, I get a stabbing pain. It sort of sucks. I can mostly manage by sitting very still and sitting up. I think I got this from a combination of volleyball and reading a book with my neck bent down, straining my back.

Anyway, I sat at home a while because I wasn't sure I could drive like that, but after a few Tylenol and some mineral ice decided to leave anyway. I drove to Southcenter, which didn't take very long, but actually getting AROUND the area took FOREVER. I went to ACME Bowl for an hour or so and played some IIDX, but there were these two teenage guys also playing, inbetween their ITG games -- one of the guys was playing 5-Key and acting like he was just THE SHIT because he could pass all these songs. (The other admitted he wasn't so good and played 2-stars on Light 7.) I went up and played, with what of course I consider my mediocre-to-poor skills, meaning that I passed two 5-stars and a 6-star on 7-key, got 100% on the 6-star so I got an extra stage, and the guys were just like "well, um, *okay*." I played like four games before I got bored of waiting around so much and wandered off. (The most amusing part was when I passed Ballad For You 7K on normal speed, no hi-speed, because I screwed up when trying to put it on HS3 and clicked too many times.) I wonder if I'm just getting too old, but I just never feel like talking to random strangers I see playing Bemani anymore.

I went to IKEA after that. I think I decided what I want to replace my broken dresser with -- a narrow tower of 5 drawers and a narrow wardrobe with shelves -- I don't think it'll look particularly right, but I think it'll function the way I want, since I currently just use the working drawers of my dresser to store socks and underwear, and I've been keeping t-shirts on two bookshelves (but I really need the shelf space back for actual books). Problem was, though, that despite the Tylenol lessening the pain, I still effectively had a dead left shoulder, so I couldn't actually LIFT the stuff. The other problem was that it looks like they only had one of the wardrobes in stock. Oren offered to go back with me tomorrow and help me lift stuff and also actually cart it home in his car, which is much larger than mine (which may also have been a problem), so hopefully we will do that and they won't be out of stock.

I drove to Oren's and we went to Mashiko for dinner! Wheeeeeeee Mashiko. This being my second time there, I ended up ordering the "Mashiko Bento", which says "shrimp and vegetable tempura, chef's choice of meat dishes, and sushi roll or sashimi". Well, in my idiocy and complete randomness I also ordered a Snowflake roll, which was a fried roll involving eel and avocado, rice and nori, and then fried in coconut flakes or something. It was really sweet and really tasty -- very different from what I'm used to in sushi rolls, but really good. The bento also ended up coming with tonkatsu, and some barbecue ribs, and some baked swordfish (I think), and tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, octopus sashimi, and... a mussel. I really don't do shellfish so that just grossed me out. Oh, there was also some seafood salad that looked like salsa, which also tasted funny to me. Overall though, everything I had was absolutely delicious and wonderful, but it was just too much food and I ended up giving a bunch of it to Oren, who had wisely just gotten a sushi combo.

I think when Carl is in town, we have to go back to Mashiko and get the omakase -- I owe it to him for making me go to kaiseki at Chaya a few months back.

Afterwards we watched the final two episodes of 逮捕しちゃうぞ the live-action series, which really was pretty good. In the final episode, Tsujimoto and Kobayakawa are driving along and they see two guys having car trouble, and they stop to help them, but suddenly recognize them: "Oh my god, it's Motoki and Takahashi of the Giants!" And the funniest part is, it actually WAS Daisuke Motoki and Yoshinobu Takahashi... they fix their car for them and are all like "Okay, now you guys owe us tickets to opening day!" It was a totally random cameo and pretty funny.

Ok, I should sleep. In theory tomorrow will get new furniture. Hopefully won't wake up with dead left arm and back pain again.

Today I did some shopping (mostly getting stuff for people back east) and I also saw the new bowling alley with the arcade with the IIDX machine. I played one game on the IIDX machine, since I hadn't played at all since May or so when we went up to Canada for IIDX Red. I really should play more... maybe now I will since there's a machine. Anyway, I did play 20 November. There were two guys there who seemed reasonably nice. Matt-Met also showed up right as I was ready to leave, because I played one game of DDR (so I could play 20 November on that too), again not having played since May, wasn't warmed up at all and had a dry throat, so my sinuses acted up and I started coughing up a lung. I hadn't had that happen in so long (funny, running at the gym or playing volleyball or such doesn't set it off), but it's always seemed to be DDR-related, goddamnit, so I guess it's a good thing I don't play anymore. Stupid health issues.

Oren and I went to Blue C for dinner because I figure I won't have sushi again for a few weeks. Then I came home, and I watched my DVD of Harry Potter and Sirius Black, while trying to finish sewing up my PP banner. I suppose in theory I could just bring the damn thing east with me and work on it there... I've gotten all the hemming done and the flap for the dowel at the top, now I just need to sew on the fringe. I'm such a slow hand-sewer though that I'm estimating it'll take me another 3 hours which I'm not sure I have.

I GO TO PITTSBURGH IN LIKE 2 DAYS AAIIIIIEEEEE
dr4b: (ginkakuji)
Today, I finally got sushi. Kevin spent the day wandering Seattle, mostly hanging out at the library. (We got lunch at Soup Daddy, which didn't have any soups I wanted!) After work, Oren picked us up, and Jack came with us too, and we went to the Fremont Blue C, which apparently is out of eels. How on earth can you be out of eels? I've got a hovercraft which is...

Well, anyway, we sat around at Blue C for a while, and afterwards came back to my place, where Oren and I demoed Katamari for Jack, and then the four of us played a game of Ticket to Ride. I won, 'cause I'm cool like dat.

I feel very, very much like I have no time. It's probably because I waste too much time.

After trying to deny all week that my nose was getting stuffy and sniffly, I think I might as well just admit it -- I have a mild cold. Yuck. Right now it's just the sniffles, I hope it doesn't get much worse. Explains the braindeadness, though.

This morning started off with me waking up with a huge stuffy headache, as the phone was ringing. It was a recruiter from Nintendo trying to tell me about a 6-month contract job doing Japanese-English localization of C++ SDK documentation (which pretty much fits all of my skillsets). I stuffily, sleepily, and oh so professionally replied, "I'm sowwy, bud youwe cawing aboud fibe munts doo lade, I habba job now," as I politely wormed out of the conversation so I could find some Tylenol. Anyway, why do people only call you with great job opportunities once you *have* a job? Sheesh.

There was some major traffic mishap today around rush hour, and all the buses got messed up. My original plan for the evening involved taking the 355 home at 6pm, grabbing my car, driving back downtown to meet up with [profile] nykkel and his girlfriend Pam at Todai for Nyk's birthday dinner, then going to West Seattle to see the Astros-Braves game with [personal profile] oren. Unfortunately, when I checked the bus availabilities, my bus was going to be 20 minutes late, and any other bus going my way was going to be similarly backed up. So I ditched going home, and hung out downtown for another hour. I went to the 5th Ave Theater to inquire about tickets for The King And I, and ended up with a 6th row center seat for tomorrow night's performance.

Then I went to Pacific Place; wasted time in Barnes & Noble for a little while. On a whim, I decided to go check out the science fiction section to see if they had [profile] ketsugami's book. They DID! Man, you have no idea how weird it is to be standing in a bookstore and see a novel written by your former D&D DM... I was going to hold off buying it until I was in Pittsburgh and make him sign it, but I decided to get it today, so maybe I'll actually read it before then. We'll see. By the way, Django, it was pretty funny, because the bar code didn't actually work when the cashier scanned the book, and she had to enter it manually. But, they did have three copies on the shelf at B&N here in Seattle. Just thought you might like to know :)

Anyway, dinner was fun, and it was good to catch up. I hadn't seen Nykkel in like... umm... *thinks* since May, or so, I think? Geez. Funny how that happens when your friends go off and get girlfriends. It was nice to meet Pam at last, too.

Afterwards, I did go over to Oren's, where we heckled the Clemens-Smoltz matchup. And the Braves kicked butt. I feel horrendously guilty rooting for the Braves, I do, but man, the Phillies were so damn close this year, if it weren't for those meddling Astros. It's funny, Clemens has been a great pitcher this year, but I swear, he's failed in a lot of clutch games. It's sort of odd. Anyway, I had the following impressions from the game:

1. John Smoltz looks just like [profile] captain_squid.
2. Marcus Giles looks just like my friend Dave Kowalski, who I haven't seen in way too long. I wonder if he's still in Fukushima...
3. It's really appropriate to hear them playing "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" by John Denver during the seventh inning stretch in a game between a Georgia team and a Texas team.
4. Half of the guys playing on the Braves are young enough that I could have babysat them when I was in high school.

Also, today Mariners Morsels gave my baseball blog a shout-out in a "Three totally sweet Mariners blogs you should read" post:

Deanna has totally established herself as the M's version of Batgirl. You'll find a wide variety of things to entertain you, including Song Parodies, In-depth Game Reports (from someone who was actually *there* most of the time!), and even pictures. We'll forgive her for being a Phillies fan (not that there's really anything wrong with that -- though my favorite NL team is the Cardinals), but it's totally cool having the male-dominated M's blogosphere represented from the female perspective, and from a self-professed Nerd (of which I totally can relate).

Whee. That made my day. :)
dr4b: (mariners)
Sunday, we went to see Felix pitching against the Orioles. We sat in section 127, row 12, which was amazing, but the Mariners lost, which was not amazing. I got a cool picture of me and my friend Conor being the uber Felix fans we are.

Nick and I walked around Greenlake after that, and we went to Blue C for dinner so I could show it to him. Then we chased the sunset, but didn't catch it in time. I forgot how early it gets dark here now.

We were supposed to go swing dancing, but didn't; we were too tired.

Today, after work, I got dinner with George and Jarrett and Megan and Josh at the Elysian Brewery, and then George had to go to the airport to go home and all.

Dan Wilson announced his retirement today, so I wrote some alternate lyrics to "Danny Boy" for him:

Oh Danny Boy, the fans, the fans are calling
From seat to seat, and down the first-base line
The summer's gone, and pennant hopes are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and we'll be fine.
But come ye back when summer's high at Safeco
Or when the mood is hushed and scores are low
'Cause we'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, we'll miss you so.

Today I made Benoit go to Blue C Sushi with me! Wheee, we went to the one in University Village because then we could also hit Jamba Juice. The funny part is that by the time we got to Jamba Juice, he was too full to get a smoothie, so I had to get one big enough that we could share. They had a new flavor, Strawberry Surf Rider. It was pretty good, but not better than my other favorites.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in errands and baking brownies and things. Then we went over to M&J's place to meet up with others to go to Woodland Park for Greenstage -- this year we decided to go see Henry V. We had a bit of an adventure actually finding the stage area, but once we did, we ate a pretty good picnic dinner and saw a pretty good show, although it was difficult to hear some of the actors some of the time. The guy who played Henry was very good though, as was the chorus guy. Overall it was a lot of fun.

I wanted to put up a super-cute picture of Ficus's puppy Oliver that I took, but my phone is being retarded and doesn't want to connect to the network and send the pictures. Grr.
dr4b: (yawn)
Last night I got home around 9, and I crashed around 9:45, which is why it's 7:30am and I've been awake for an hour already.

Not much to say, though. Yesterday morning's chai came from Joelle's Cafe, across the street from IDX. This was the first place they actually asked if I wanted nonfat milk or soy milk or whatnot, so I got nonfat -- the result is pretty much the same generic chai every other coffeehouse has. Dammit, I want Taste of India to open a chai stand downtown.

(Yes, I really do pass by at least ten different coffeehouses in a 5-block walk from the bus to work. Why do you ask?)

I had a program I was working on at work. Jack asked me how long it'd take. At the time he asked, I was still getting my head around it, so I said "I'll be done end of tomorrow?" Then I actually started writing the script, and I was done by the end of the day. That's a good feeling. It's frustrating to be in a stage where I know I don't know enough to really be effective, but it's kinda cool to still be doing okay despite that.

Also, there was cake.

After work I went to Fuji Sushi with Drew and Jason, since I hadn't been there in forever and I had this sadistic desire to make Jason walk uphill from Pioneer Square to there. No, just kidding. It was fun, and Drew and I had some stuff to catch up on anyway.

Then I walked across town to catch my bus home, and I voraciously devoured another 50 pages of "The Ball" on the ride home... and then I crashed. Boom.

Has anyone else read anything by Daniel Paisner? This book is amazing -- not just from a baseball perspective, since it isn't really about baseball, but it's more about American culture and the psychology of wanting to "own part of the action", and the controversy that stemmed over the people who caught and kept home run balls from the 1998 season. I'm really wondering if this guy is always this good -- just like when I read Moneyball, I wondered about Michael Lewis, since that was such an amazing book as well.

hmm

Jul. 6th, 2005 08:55 pm
Well, I went to work today for a few hours. It's always fun playing catch-up. Another guy started in our group while I was gone. He's older and likes cobol and doesn't know Perl. Scary.

I was ravenously hungry at 6pm so I left work and went to Blue C for dinner. I like how I can get 8 dishes at Blue C for the price of the 4 dishes I got at the kaiten place in NYC.

I'm probly going to try to go to sleep soon, even though it's only like 9pm west coast time. It'll be weird falling asleep without a goodnight hug from Nick, but I guess I'll survive.

I'll have to go shopping this weekend for shoes and take into account some of those suggestions.

Oh yeah, and while I'm at it, I like that "five songs you despise by bands you otherwise adore" meme, so here's my answer, mostly based on "I tend to skip this song when I listen to the CD":

1) Eddie From Ohio -- "Let's Get Mesolithic"
2) Moxy Fruvous -- it's a tie between "No No Raja" and "Sahara"
3) TMBG - the entire album Mink Car, except for "Drink"
4) Great Big Sea -- "Lukey"
5) Beautiful South -- "Don't Marry Her"

I think the counter meme would be "name 5 songs that you almost always press repeat on the CD and sing along to a second time" --

1) The Pogues, "Fairytale of New York"
2) Puffy, "これが私の生きる道"
3) Aiko, "桜の時"
4) Eddie From Ohio, "Fly South"
5) Indigo Girls, "Watershed"
And didn't sing out at the top of my lungs or anything. Actually, I was kinda surprised that it was such a nondescript corner.

See, it was the day for making gratuitous Eddie From Ohio references, being the Fifth of July and all. So I spent the day wandering the city. I went by Book-Off, and got lunch at Oh!Raku sushi, formerly Genki sushi, the kaiten place which is too damn expensive. Went around Rockefeller Plaza; failed to get anything; was properly scared by the Build-a-Bear place.

So I went down to Noho/Soho and wandered there for a while. I went to the corner of Bleecker and Broadway and... er, well, I forget most of the lyrics right this second, and all I did was get an ice cream cone from the Mister Softee parked on the corner. It melted in approximately 1.57 minutes, ending in the cone exploding in my hands as I got to the bottom of it. I walked around the area for a while, though. The Scholastic Store is really cool and has all of this cool Harry Potter stuff, and they're also having a big HP party next week, of course. I got chai in a random streetcorner cafe (not a Starbucks! a place at Broadway and Spring) and sat around for a while, then walked more. I walked through NYU, but it really doesn't feel like a campus, which bugs me. Washington Sq. Park with the chess players is neat though.

Came back up here after that to pack, stopping by Times Square to pick up theater tickets. Then Nick and I headed down to see Avenue Q, stopping at a deli on the way for dinner -- and daaaamn was that a good sandwich.

Anyway, Avenue Q was fantastic. There's so much that doesn't come out just from listening to the soundtrack, but I'd feel sort of like I'm giving away spoilers if I really talked about a lot of it, so I won't (except for "Monsterssori School", hahahahaha). Suffice it to say, it was awesome, and Nick really laughed at it too, which is good. It was a lot of fun and I'm happy I got to see it.

Ack, I have to leave New York soon. That sucks.
dr4b: (Taki)
The B'z are such good car music. I think I'm on a kick for a bit.

I went today to find boxes to put baseball cards in. I tried to go to the card shop in Fremont but they were having an auction or something with lots of scary people. Instead, I got sushi from Blue C, and stopped by the Game Wizard on 65th for boxes.

There was a big antique car show going on, on my street, this morning/afternoon. I walked through it for a bit to go to the post office. I don't care about cars but it's neat to see thousands of people in my neighborhood.

I went to one round of the Wrasse blockade because Carl couldn't be there. Nyah.

I tried to go to [profile] animegothgrrl's beach party, but I drove to the park and the guy said I couldn't park in their lots because they were all full, and then I drove around the other lots and the area looking for a parking space, and eventually found one but thought "do I really feel like walking almost a mile there and back, given I'm not even sure how long I'll stay?" and so no, I wussed out. If Julie actually reads this, I apologize for wussing out.

Instead, I went down to Tacoma and hung out with [profile] damienroc for the evening (and occasionally [profile] wooko when I went and annoyed him too). Originally we were going to Chris's house for a bbq, and then a movie, except Chris got stuck in Seattle, so instead Jeff and I wasted time for an hour (he played PP, I read a book) and then we went down to PLU and got mexican food for dinner at a place called Rayna's (well, Reyna's, but since I know a Rayna, that's funnier), and then we saw the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

I know the movie got somewhat bad reviews, but I really liked it. You could either call it a mindless action flick with pretty people, or you could call it a romantic comedy with lots of guns, and either way you'd be right. I enjoyed how clever it was, though. Pitt or Jolie would utter a line totally deadpan and about 5-10 seconds later I'd get it and start laughing. Yeah, the lines themselves were dumb sometimes, but the setups were nice. I thought it was really well done and just really enjoyed it.

I still need to see Bewitched, though. And having seen the preview for it again, knowing that it's directed by Nora Ephron and the main character is a blonde, the mind wonders: why is Nicole Kidman starring in it instead of Meg Ryan?

On that note, I'm going to sleep.

As an aside, yes, there is a very big difference between wasting an hour reading a book here alone and wasting an hour reading a book when someone else is wasting time nearby. Call it "presence" or whatever.
dr4b: (mariners)
In an effort to keep getting up early, I came up with a perfect excuse to get up at 9am today... to go to the Mariners game at 1pm! Yeah. See, baseball is good for me.

Seriously, though, the game was scary. It was sold out thanks to father's day -- I got the Safeco shuttle down from Northgate and got to the park around 12:30pm -- and there were huge lines at the ticket windows, and the lady's like "I only have single tickets and only in Field and Box". And when I got up there and said I wanted a single ticket, she basically said "35 bucks, and you'll be in the far parts of Field". Now I personally know that those are SUCKY seats because you can't see the screens and you're at a bad angle. So I asked about the 50 dollar seats. She had one that was 26 rows straight behind home plate. No shit, I took that one in an instant. I guess I'm starting a job tomorrow, I can afford it.

It was a HOT and SUNNY day out today, and the shade didn't actually cover me until somewhere in the 5th inning, although I did bring a hat so I don't think I'm sunburnt at all. The game was really a very good game, lots of fun to watch, high-scoring. The Mariners really hit up Tom Glavine for a ton of runs early on (it was 6-1 as of the third inning). It's kind of weird, since I mean, it's Tom Glavine, the guy could reasonably reach 300 career victories and is almost a shoe-in for the hall of fame. Meche pitched admirably for the Mariners, but when he hit the 100-pitch mark, he practically just fell over, loading the bases and then hitting Woodward to knock in a run. Well, we put in Matt Thornton to take care of the loaded bases, and all of the people scored. It's ridiculous that it inflates Meche's ERA like that and Thornton gets off with barely anything. 6-5. Fortunately the Mariners countered by exploding for 4 runs in the 6th, mostly due to Mike DeJean walking a bunch of them -- even walking in a run. The final score was 11-5. [profile] nickjong called me during the final out to express his extreme sadness that the Mariners had swept the Mets.

It really wasn't all bad. Mike Piazza went 3-for-5 after going hitless all through the weekend. Ichiro was also 3-for-5, scoring two runs. The "new kids on the block", Morse and Rivera, combined for 5-for-8 and three runs scored. It's looking more and more like our middle infield next year will be Jose Lopez and Mike Morse, at this rate, given the hitting tear they're both on.

I sat around too many rude Mets fans though, who insisted on yelling and screaming a lot, especially things like "HEY BELTRAN, YOU SUCK, WE'RE NOT PAYING YOU 119 MILLION DOLLARS TO SUCK LIKE THIS, LOSER."

I noticed that Kazuo Matsui and Kazuhisa Ishii pretty much stood together leaning on the Mets dugout rails for most of the game. I guess Ishii pitched the other day and Matsui doesn't get played, so they can just chat in Japanese together.

Oh well. Mets sweep aside, I came home after the game and went out to Big 5 Sporting Goods because I'm running out of space in my scorecard book. I also picked up stuff for swimming, like a cap and goggles. Go me. After that I walked around Greenlake. I called my dad for Father's Day and talked to him for like two miles... er, like 35 minutes. The lake was nice. There weren't ducklings out today, I think it's too late for them, but there were goslings. They were with the big geese, and were fairly big themselves, but they were all fuzzy, which is how you know they're goslings.

On the way back from Greenlake I decided to drive past Megan and Josh's house and see how far they'd come with the fence. The really funny part is, I was about a block away from their house and my phone rings. It's Megan, asking if I'd want to go to dinner at Mashiko. So I'm like "Dude, I'm a block away from your house. No joke. I wanted to see the fence." So I get out and admire the fence (they have done a TON, almost completed the entire side that they needed to get done first) and we make plans for dinner... except since they're yucky from the fence building and I'm yucky from sitting out in the sun and then walking several miles, we decide to reconvene in a bit. A little later they pick up me and then Eli and we all go to Mashiko. (I finally gave Eli the socks I knitted him. I started those socks in like... Christmas 2002, and finally finished them a few weeks ago)

Mashiko is seriously good. We got the omakase, and M&J said they were picking up the tab for me to celebrate me starting my job tomorrow. So, I have no idea exactly what level of omakase we got or how much it costs, but I decided to be group secretary and write it all down, so here is what we got (in order, we got one dish at a time):

1. Rockfish sashimi with ponzu sauce, shiso oil, red shanghai peppercorns, and cucumbers in the middle
2. Oysters with spicy sauce and daikon sprouts
3. Skipjack and tuna tartare, with capers and sprouts and onions I think, and a raw egg yolk
4. Nigiri sushi: albacore, opa, scallops with prosciutto, and troll caught wild alaskan king salmon, or something like that.
5. Grilled swordfish with badass plum sauce potatoes. (I was specifically told to note that they were badass)
6. Some sort of awesome roll - it had unagi, avocado, sweet potato, walnuts, and was in a soy wrapper of some sort.
7. More rolls - dynamite rolls, amaebi rolls, atomic tuna rolls, and some spicy crab roll
8. Baked fish - halibut, we think, and some sort of pink fish that wasn't salmon
9. Dessert -- Plum wine sorbet, mochi ice cream, green tea tiramisu, and creme caramel (sorta like flan)

It was craaaaaazy and everything was very good. I even was brave and ate an oyster (my first ever -- they kinda gross me out). I will have to find an excuse to go back there sometime.

Okay, well, now it's 12:30am and I should go to sleep since I want to get up at 7 or so. I hope I can get to sleep despite nerves... we'll see.

It was so nice out today. After two days of temperatures in the high 80's, we got a nice day of temperatures in the high 60's. I walked the 3 miles around the lake and didn't even break a sweat. (For the record I did 10 miles last week plus swimming.)

Went to Blue C for dinner with Edgars, who hadn't been there before; he thought it was pretty cool.

I did laundry in the evening and watched the first DVD of Trailer Park Boys. Funny stuff.

I'm going to Portland tomorrow for a Powell's run with Brian (R, that is)... I really should be asleep by now but I'm so out of whack. I have no idea if anyone I know in Portland actually reads my LJ, but we should be around for most of the afternoon and early evening if anyone feels like calling my cell.
