Sunday, we went to see Felix pitching against the Orioles. We sat in section 127, row 12, which was amazing, but the Mariners lost, which was not amazing. I got a cool picture of me and my friend Conor being the uber Felix fans we are.

Nick and I walked around Greenlake after that, and we went to Blue C for dinner so I could show it to him. Then we chased the sunset, but didn't catch it in time. I forgot how early it gets dark here now.

We were supposed to go swing dancing, but didn't; we were too tired.

Today, after work, I got dinner with George and Jarrett and Megan and Josh at the Elysian Brewery, and then George had to go to the airport to go home and all.

Dan Wilson announced his retirement today, so I wrote some alternate lyrics to "Danny Boy" for him:

Oh Danny Boy, the fans, the fans are calling
From seat to seat, and down the first-base line
The summer's gone, and pennant hopes are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and we'll be fine.
But come ye back when summer's high at Safeco
Or when the mood is hushed and scores are low
'Cause we'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, we'll miss you so.

Today was one of those weird days where I could have been a lot more social than I was -- but instead, I think I had a pretty good day anyway. It started with running around Greenlake, by which I mean, running for about 1/6th of the time and walking the rest.

Afterwards I went on a shopping spree. I started at Easy Street Records, where I had a few things I intended to get, but they didn't have any of it (well, not in used CDs anyway, which is what I wanted to get), so instead I picked up a few Belle and Sebastian CDs (I blame [profile] ciole and/or [profile] mh75), and a Kirsty MacColl CD, and some assorted other stuff, among which was In Search Of The Lost Chord by the Moody Blues.

I digress for a second here. When I was a kid, this album gave me nightmares. Not because of the music, but because the cover has a somewhat disturbing picture on it. I mean, not by today's standards, but for a little kid, the picture of a skull by the picture of a baby... eh, I dunno. It just disturbed me. Now, listening to this album I'm realizing that it really is one of their best albums ever. It's just a very nicely done cohesive unit, much better than most groups achieve on their second album. There's this weird feeling of 60's-ish orchestral rock in it with sitars and flutes and horns backdropping balladic unison vocals for large parts of the album, but then it comes out with fun songs like "Dr. Livingston, I presume" and "The Best Way to Travel", and such.

Okay, well, anyway, I drove downtown after that and parked at Pacific Place, where I thought they still had the $3 for all day Sunday parking deal. I went to the Mariners Team Store down on 4th and Stewart, to see if I could get a women's-clothing-like Mariners shirt. Most of their stuff is ugly though, lots of pastel and glitter and junk, which I won't wear, I just wanted a women's t-shirt. Oh well. I did find one shirt I vaguely liked, I might go back for it. After that, I went clothes shopping at Old Navy for a while. Usually this would be pretty terrible, but I found an awesome long denim skirt on a clearance rack for $10, and it fit perfectly (wtfomgbear), and I tried on a whole bunch of other stuff and found another skirt and two tops. Holy crap, skirts. I should actually wear some. The long one I actually would wear to work I think.

After that I went to see Must Love Dogs, because I just really really wanted to see it. I think it hit home a little bit too deeply in several aspects, though, I think what it really pointed out is the utter problem with online matchmaking services: most of the guys out there aren't John Cusack. Infact, that is fundamentally the problem with dating in general. If every guy out there was John Cusack, the world would be a better place.

Errr, anyway.

Attempted to get shoes at Fred Meyer after that. Found cool Mary-Jane sneakers from Skechers, but wasn't positive I wanted them, so punted on the idea. I'll look around more some other time. Shoes are tough. Clothes is tough. Life is tough.

Gah, I should get to sleep.

Today, the first thing I had to do was run an errand to Pacific Fabrics, where I picked up our tickets for Stitch'n'Pitch (and t-shirts, too. I hope we can make Josh and Cory wear them, heh). I asked if they had yarn in navy, silver, and teal colours (like the Mariners) but they didn't. So maybe I will just bring my scorecard to the game -- or maybe I'll find something else I can knit. I'm not sure.

The Mariners had a retarded loss today, but Kevin Millwood got the win, so I don't feel too terrible about it. I should be seeing him pitch this Friday when the Indians are in Seattle, too.

Benoit and I went walking around Greenlake again today, since it was light out and he could really see the plants and ducks and stuff. We went and visited the bunnies again, and we even saw ducklings at the lake (it's awfully late in the year for them). Unfortunately, my back was aching and the sun was pretty bright, or we might have rented a boat and gone canoeing or something... bleh, I really do want to do it sometime, just I'm so worried about throwing out my back again.

Hunger led me to give him a tour of Fremont, since I thought he should see the troll and all the other neighborhood artwork, and we had dinner at Costas Opa, which I have not been to in quite some time (like, since I had dinner there with wf08 and dl2n a year or two ago, and I really should call Will one of these days). Dinner was good, but next time I have to remember to just get moussaka and spanokopita and not bother with the combos, since I greatly dislike the meat-filled dolmathes and I don't really need the skewer stuff or the rice and veggies.

I took a weird route home, and it headed us so far west that we decided to stop off at Golden Gardens, where we watched the mountains and the water and the people and the dogs and the boats (really, it was quite beautiful, though we were too early for sunset). I found out that the little fish'n'chips place there has SOFT ICE CREAM!!! so I got a big big vanilla twist soft-serve cone, which made me extremely happy. I didn't think anywhere around here had soft-serve aside from foofy lowcal yogurt stuff.

And then to head off an already fun day we went swing dancing again! I ran into two CMU people there, even -- one was Kathryn, who was my stand partner my last year in Kiltie Band, and she's an intern at Amazon this summer, and so it was neat to run into her. And then I also ran into Jed Pickel, who says HI MEGAN! We were both really surprised to see each other there, but it was super-cool and I danced a few songs with him and we chatted and it was just cool to see an old friend. But other than that I didn't really dance with anyone but Benoit -- I did ask a few people and I got turned down twice and then I gave up. It was still fun anyway.

Tomorrow night I have to send Benoit back to Pittsburgh, and then go back to normal life... whatever "normal" means these days, I'm not really sure.

I have been thinking about a problem from work since I went home. I think I may need to rewrite things... sometimes working new tools into old tricks is hard.

I went to the gym after work and made my arms all sore, but at least this time it's because I upped the weights, not because I did the workout too fast.

I got home and Benoit had cooked dinner. How weird. It was good though, and we ate outside on the patio.

Afterwards, I got Benoit to walk around Greenlake with me. It was late enough that the sunset wasn't that cool, but the moonrise was. And the bunnies and ducks.

I took him to Central Market after that so we could get Rainier cherries, and mochi ice cream and stuff like that. And some stupid expensive cheese which the cashier made fun of me for calling expensive.

People are visiting me in September! Nick will come here early in the month and my mom and stepfather will come here late in the month. And maybe Carl will come visit in August if I nag him enough.

oh, and a brief puzzle pirate portrait stop )

This morning I got up and ran around Greenlake. No, seriously. I didn't like, run the whole time, I mostly would run for 30-60 seconds, then walk for a minute or two, then run, then walk, but I ran, I really did. I should do that more and build up stamina.

[personal profile] oren asked if I'd want to check out a supposed Philly cheesesteak place in the u-district. We went there and it turned out to be closed. Oops. So we got lunch at Chipotle instead. Mm, Chipotle.

Oren has a bigger car than I do, so he offered to take me to IKEA, so we did that. My goal had been to get a new dresser or wardrobe or something to keep t-shirts in, but I wasn't really quite happy with anything I saw there, so I decided to continue thinking it over. What I did get was three new bookcases, which can go under the counter and in the hallway and things like that. Trust me, they fit. So now I have some more shelf space. I might make the hallway bookcase my baseball bookcase, maybe.

While I built bookcases and did laundry, Oren hung out here and played Kingdom Hearts. It took me like an hour to figure out why the voice of Sora sounded so familiar (it's Haley Joel Osment), and the Disney voices are pretty funny.

I still have a lot of cleaning to do. I feel uninspired.

I actually logged into PP and pillaged for an hour tonight. I think that was like, one of the first times I'd actually played any of the puzzles in about three weeks. I just can't make myself care about the game at all anymore, really.

Somehow the Mariners have managed to take the last 3 games from the AL-West-leading Angels, which is crazy. Jamie Moyer got his 200th career win over my favorite blue-eyed pitcher last night, and the M's actually bothered giving Ryan Franklin some run support today. Crazy. I had started writing an article about "Willie Bloomquist the Washburn-killer" but then USSM beat me to the punch. Dammit!

In an effort to keep getting up early, I came up with a perfect excuse to get up at 9am today... to go to the Mariners game at 1pm! Yeah. See, baseball is good for me.

Seriously, though, the game was scary. It was sold out thanks to father's day -- I got the Safeco shuttle down from Northgate and got to the park around 12:30pm -- and there were huge lines at the ticket windows, and the lady's like "I only have single tickets and only in Field and Box". And when I got up there and said I wanted a single ticket, she basically said "35 bucks, and you'll be in the far parts of Field". Now I personally know that those are SUCKY seats because you can't see the screens and you're at a bad angle. So I asked about the 50 dollar seats. She had one that was 26 rows straight behind home plate. No shit, I took that one in an instant. I guess I'm starting a job tomorrow, I can afford it.

It was a HOT and SUNNY day out today, and the shade didn't actually cover me until somewhere in the 5th inning, although I did bring a hat so I don't think I'm sunburnt at all. The game was really a very good game, lots of fun to watch, high-scoring. The Mariners really hit up Tom Glavine for a ton of runs early on (it was 6-1 as of the third inning). It's kind of weird, since I mean, it's Tom Glavine, the guy could reasonably reach 300 career victories and is almost a shoe-in for the hall of fame. Meche pitched admirably for the Mariners, but when he hit the 100-pitch mark, he practically just fell over, loading the bases and then hitting Woodward to knock in a run. Well, we put in Matt Thornton to take care of the loaded bases, and all of the people scored. It's ridiculous that it inflates Meche's ERA like that and Thornton gets off with barely anything. 6-5. Fortunately the Mariners countered by exploding for 4 runs in the 6th, mostly due to Mike DeJean walking a bunch of them -- even walking in a run. The final score was 11-5. [profile] nickjong called me during the final out to express his extreme sadness that the Mariners had swept the Mets.

It really wasn't all bad. Mike Piazza went 3-for-5 after going hitless all through the weekend. Ichiro was also 3-for-5, scoring two runs. The "new kids on the block", Morse and Rivera, combined for 5-for-8 and three runs scored. It's looking more and more like our middle infield next year will be Jose Lopez and Mike Morse, at this rate, given the hitting tear they're both on.

I sat around too many rude Mets fans though, who insisted on yelling and screaming a lot, especially things like "HEY BELTRAN, YOU SUCK, WE'RE NOT PAYING YOU 119 MILLION DOLLARS TO SUCK LIKE THIS, LOSER."

I noticed that Kazuo Matsui and Kazuhisa Ishii pretty much stood together leaning on the Mets dugout rails for most of the game. I guess Ishii pitched the other day and Matsui doesn't get played, so they can just chat in Japanese together.

Oh well. Mets sweep aside, I came home after the game and went out to Big 5 Sporting Goods because I'm running out of space in my scorecard book. I also picked up stuff for swimming, like a cap and goggles. Go me. After that I walked around Greenlake. I called my dad for Father's Day and talked to him for like two miles... er, like 35 minutes. The lake was nice. There weren't ducklings out today, I think it's too late for them, but there were goslings. They were with the big geese, and were fairly big themselves, but they were all fuzzy, which is how you know they're goslings.

On the way back from Greenlake I decided to drive past Megan and Josh's house and see how far they'd come with the fence. The really funny part is, I was about a block away from their house and my phone rings. It's Megan, asking if I'd want to go to dinner at Mashiko. So I'm like "Dude, I'm a block away from your house. No joke. I wanted to see the fence." So I get out and admire the fence (they have done a TON, almost completed the entire side that they needed to get done first) and we make plans for dinner... except since they're yucky from the fence building and I'm yucky from sitting out in the sun and then walking several miles, we decide to reconvene in a bit. A little later they pick up me and then Eli and we all go to Mashiko. (I finally gave Eli the socks I knitted him. I started those socks in like... Christmas 2002, and finally finished them a few weeks ago)

Mashiko is seriously good. We got the omakase, and M&J said they were picking up the tab for me to celebrate me starting my job tomorrow. So, I have no idea exactly what level of omakase we got or how much it costs, but I decided to be group secretary and write it all down, so here is what we got (in order, we got one dish at a time):

1. Rockfish sashimi with ponzu sauce, shiso oil, red shanghai peppercorns, and cucumbers in the middle
2. Oysters with spicy sauce and daikon sprouts
3. Skipjack and tuna tartare, with capers and sprouts and onions I think, and a raw egg yolk
4. Nigiri sushi: albacore, opa, scallops with prosciutto, and troll caught wild alaskan king salmon, or something like that.
5. Grilled swordfish with badass plum sauce potatoes. (I was specifically told to note that they were badass)
6. Some sort of awesome roll - it had unagi, avocado, sweet potato, walnuts, and was in a soy wrapper of some sort.
7. More rolls - dynamite rolls, amaebi rolls, atomic tuna rolls, and some spicy crab roll
8. Baked fish - halibut, we think, and some sort of pink fish that wasn't salmon
9. Dessert -- Plum wine sorbet, mochi ice cream, green tea tiramisu, and creme caramel (sorta like flan)

It was craaaaaazy and everything was very good. I even was brave and ate an oyster (my first ever -- they kinda gross me out). I will have to find an excuse to go back there sometime.

Okay, well, now it's 12:30am and I should go to sleep since I want to get up at 7 or so. I hope I can get to sleep despite nerves... we'll see.

Eh... today I went to Megan and Josh's house, watched them build a fence for a bit, attempted to take Ficus's puppy Oliver for a walk, except Ollie didn't want to go to Greenlake, so I ended up walking the lake by myself. It was a nice day for a walk, sunny and 65 degrees. Afterwards, I mooched dinner, because I'm just a slacker like that.

I've been playing a lot of the video game Amplitude the last few days. I'd been stuck on a few songs, notably "I am hated" on Brutal and "Shades of blue" on Insane. I beat both of those tonight and got fairly far into Insane mode as well. I dunno why I've been playing it, I just have. The thing is, I tried to go back and play Frequency, and it just SUCKS in comparison, oddly enough... there aren't even any songs on there I wanted to play besides Science Genius Girl anymore. Go figure.

I really should make a "to-do" list for myself of things I need to get done this week while I have daytimes free, but most of the stuff on my list isn't really urgent. Hmm.

Phillies this week! Phillies this week! Phillies this week!

It was so nice out today. After two days of temperatures in the high 80's, we got a nice day of temperatures in the high 60's. I walked the 3 miles around the lake and didn't even break a sweat. (For the record I did 10 miles last week plus swimming.)

Went to Blue C for dinner with Edgars, who hadn't been there before; he thought it was pretty cool.

I did laundry in the evening and watched the first DVD of Trailer Park Boys. Funny stuff.

I'm going to Portland tomorrow for a Powell's run with Brian (R, that is)... I really should be asleep by now but I'm so out of whack. I have no idea if anyone I know in Portland actually reads my LJ, but we should be around for most of the afternoon and early evening if anyone feels like calling my cell.
