Okay, it's 12:30am and I am WATCHING THE SUPER BOWL. This is really surreal. It's pretty spliced together and the commentary is all in Japanese. The commercials are normal (as in, they're showing the same commercials I've seen all night).

Before this, I was watching Ainori, but I missed a really important detail early on and ended up kinda zoning out for half of it (but Jeff filled me in later on what was going on). Before that I was watching SMAPxSMAP which was FUCKING AWESOME. Not only did they have Hakuho, a famous sumo wrestler, as the Bistro SMAP guest, but then later on they did a really funny parody skit called "Debu Note", which was like "Death Note" only anyone whose name is written in the book becomes big and fat. (I know, it sounds stupid, you had to see it I guess. I'm largely unfamiliar with the original and even I thought it was hilarious). Then, to finish off, Christopher Cross was the musical guest, so all of SMAP sang Arthur's Theme ("The Best That You Can Do") with him and it was really awesome, lots of fun.

Before that... well, Pau came over here tonight around 5:30 and we played Extra Innings, a baseball dice game, for a few hours. He had gone and rated all of the NPB teams for 2007, so this was partially to playtest some rules and some players and all. First we played Fighters (me, Darvish) vs. Lotte (Pau, Naruse) and I lost 8-4 when, of all things, Darvish gave up a 3-run homer to Fukuura. Then our second game was Chunichi (me, Kawakami) vs. Hanshin (Pau, Shimoyanagi). It was going along just fine until I was a moron and pinch-hit for Kenshin in the 8th inning and then Hisamoto gave up the game. Or more like, me rolling some 1's gave up the game. But whatever. The funny part was, we had the 2006 Fighters DVD on in the background for the first game and a Chunichi DVD on in the background for the second. And I was wearing a Fighters t-shirt all day so for the second game I decided I needed to put on my Dragons Morino #31 jersey... to be a good sport I let Pau borrow my Hanshin Imaoka #7 jersey. I insisted on doing all the player cheer songs for my teams, but apparently Pau is allergic to Tyrone Woods and so he made a point of pinch-hitting Shinjiro Hiyama, my nemesis. Anyway, Hanshin won the second game 3-2. Alas. All in all we spent about 4 hours playing.

The afternoon today... well, I did laundry, and I got lunch at Kura, and I bought snacks for gaming at Max Valu (sadly this is the one time of the year that I cannot get Pro Yakyu Chips), and some stuff from the 100-yen shop. And then I came home and cleaned up my apartment a bit since it was a royal mess before, and now it's just cluttered. Even Pau says that my place is really really small, even for Japan, though what would I know?

Wow, come to think of it, this was one majorly social weekend. If only my life was always busy like this!

Also, man, this is one FAST superbowl replay. One hour in and we're already past halftime. Having commentary in Japanese is just plain weird, but the crazy thing is that I actually understand it for the most part. ("TOUCHDOOOOWWN!!!! KORE WA GYAKUTEN!!!" or "TAISETSU NA TAISETSU NA TAISETSU NA SAADO ANDO TEN!" or "ATO ICHI YAADO" and so on.) I don't know whether this is a good or bad thing.

Woke up late again, of course, and Oren came over. For lack of any better ideas for lunch, we went to Uwajimaya, where we met up with Zach. I got thai noodles and everyone else got sushi, and we took it all back to Oren's house, where we sat around playing cards for several hours -- first Mhing (a mah-jong card game we hadn't played in aaaaages) and more Tichu, where Carl and I teamed up and actually beat Oren and Zach, thus ending the debate about whether Oren always wins or Deanna always loses.

Because it was a Sunday night, Zach and Oren and Carl and I went to Taste of India. It still amuses me to no end to type a sentence like that, being as we used to have a group of friends back in college who went to the Taste of India restaurant in Pittsburgh every Sunday night. Whee. Carl and I split some matar paneer and I ate too much bread.

Came back here, watched a few episodes of Sledge Hammer, played some 4-player Mario Kart, and then Zach and Oren left. Carl and I stayed up talking for a while, but not too late because he had an early morning flight today, and infact, as I type this he should be in the air somewhere. Bleh, guess I'll see him at Carnival or something.

So, yeah. I'll do new year's resolutions soon, but I should go do some productive-like things today.

So, last night I was going to write a short blurb on Marinerds about Hugh "Losing Pitcher" Mulcahy, to honor Ryan Franklin's non-tender, but then when looking through books for notes about lousy Phillies pitchers, was reminded of the even worse luck and worse talent pitcher Jack Nabors, who pitched for the Philadelphia Pathetics in 1916. There's this great story about Nabors, well on his way to a record-setting awful 1-20 season, who was pitching in Boston one day, and supposedly went into the ninth inning holding a 1-0 lead and a no-hitter -- only to have a set of mishaps like walks and errors lead the Red Sox into tying the game 1-1 with a runner on third, so Nabors deliberately threw a wild pitch 20 feet over the plate, letting the runner score and ending the game at 2-1, "because these guys are never going to get me another run, and if you think I'm going to sit out here and pitch another eight innings in this summer heat, you've got to be crazy."

Great story, isn't it? Except the thing is... it didn't happen that way. Last night I noticed that I couldn't find a record of any game that came close to matching this description on Retrosheet, and my suspicion was that it was actually the game where they lost 3-2, but Retrosheet doesn't have play-by-plays or box scores for 1916, just the final scores and starting pitchers.

This morning, on the way to work, I stopped in at the library, briefly looked around baseball books with no luck, and then asked a clerk, "I need to access a newspaper that would have the box score of a baseball game played between the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Athletics on June 24, 1916. Can you help me?" Fortunately, we found the New York Times sports section for that day, and sure enough, the box score indicated that this Nabors anecdote, which I have seen in at least three books, is not factually correct, for various reasons. I left the library with a big grin on my face and a box score printout in my grubby little hands. Seeing the printout sitting on my desk at work all day, I couldn't wait to get home and write this article detailing my find. Man, I'm a goddamn dork, aren't I? On the other hand, I actually really sort of enjoy hunting down these historical discrepancies in baseball books -- only a month ago I also found several in a 1980's Phillies book I was reading as well. Something tells me that being a fact checker for a book publisher doesn't pay as well as being a software engineer...

Um, so anyway, work was okay -- at one point Rich and I were working on releasing some code, but we needed Jack's help, so we were going to call him since he was taking the day off, and I said "Wait, wait, if you call him you HAVE to say happy birthday," so Rich calls him like "Hey, Jack! We just wanted to wish you happy birthday! Well... er, actually, no, we wanted to ask you about these files."

After work I went to [personal profile] samildanach and [profile] llynecat's apartment for Jack's birthday party though. I met their down-the-hall neighbor Jason and we went and picked out some board games, and in the meantime, [personal profile] spazzychic (who I had never met but knew of for a while) and [profile] aquatwo (talk about WEIRD COINCIDENCES, though I hadn't seen him in forever!) showed up, and we ended up playing Pit for a couple of hands, during which time Jack's sister Peggy showed up. And after that there was pizza-eating and we watched the movie Shaun of the Dead, which was very funny, but I don't think I'll ever actually watch it again (I don't deal so well with all the blood and guts scenes). After that we watched the X-Men trailer, and I was feeling sort of zoned-out, so I came home.

I logged into PP and wanted to just zone out more and puzzle, so I asked Jarrett if I could sail with him -- he was doing a long trade run -- and it was EXACTLY what I needed. I'm #5 in the ocean in Carpentry again, biznatches.
Today there was clothes shopping. I found a skirt I really wanted at JC Penney's at Northgate, but they only had it in size 4. It wasn't in the catalog, but they said I could try the Alderwood Mall branch... which is like 11 miles away. So I went there. The Penney's in Alderwood kicked butt, and not only did I find the skirt in my size, but I found like four tops I wanted. Dude, clothes shopping still sucks, but I guess I'm getting better at it. The only thing that really hurts me is that I only wear cool and dark colours for the most part and refuse to wear anything pink, orange, yellow, lime, violet, etc... and this time of year, those are the big colours out on all the clothing racks. So I'll find a style of shirt I like and the only acceptable colour it'll come in is green or blue or dark brown or something.

I would have done more looking around the mall, except Drew called me at 3:15ish like "Hey, I'm at the CMU alumni picnic thingy and a whole bunch of people wondered why you're not here..." and I thought, oh damn, maybe I should go to that thing after all. So I went down to Gasworks for the picnic. It was like 4 when I got there and I think it started at 2, but it worked out okay. I talked to a whole bunch of people I knew, and then some people decided to play CS Volleyball for a while. I still have all my volleyball reflexes, which rules. I was actually kind of surprised. What I don't have anymore is setting hands, so it was all bumping, but still, it was good, I could even spike. I really should try playing volleyball again. The gym has pick-up volleyball some evenings, I should just go and see how it is... nothing to lose, really, right?

Oh, so anyway, after volleyballing for an hour or two, it started getting rainy-ish. I had made vague plans with Brian M for the evening since I hadn't seen him in a bazillion years, but Drew and Jason wanted to hang out too, so I said we could all hang out! So Brian came over and we met up with Drew, Jason, and some other guy whose name I never quite caught who was a CMU undergrad and will be a UW grad student. We went to Taste of India for dinner. It was CRAZY crowded and service was lousy, but food was tasty, chai was plentiful, and conversation was good. After dinner we came back here, and played a couple games of Ricochet Robot, which I've been itching to play lately. Brian and Drew totally killed me the first game, but I came back with a vengeance and won 10 out of 17 goals in the second game. It was pretty funny.

I guess I filled all my weekend goals except for seeing Bewitched. Well, I didn't walk around Greenlake, either, but I did play volleyball outdoors for at least an hour, so I think that qualifies in the same place, namely "get exercise outdoors".
Today I went to help Megan and Josh build their fence, except that there were a ton of people and not enough of a bottleneck. I did some weeding, and then I sat around playing piano for a while, and then I just gave up and left. I know, I suck. I did get to see Ficus's new puppy Oliver, who is the cutest puppydog I have ever seen in my entire lifetime. Infact, I think it's a crime for a puppy to be that damn cute.

Anyway, Drew and Oren had both called me while I was sitting around at M&J's house, so I ended up picking up Oren and going to Taste of India for dinner... I figured that was a Seattle restaurant he should see. Food was good and the chai was great because it was so chilly out today. After that we came back to my apartment and played Karaoke Revolution for a while, which was really funny and Oren made fun of my deteriorating kanji skills. Drew and Jason came over after that and hung out for a while, and we played Ticket to Ride. That was pretty fun, except the very last turn where Oren ended the game one turn too soon for me (it took me 5 turns to gather 4 wilds and a blue)... I woulda tied him for the win with 116 if he'd ended it one turn later, but instead I placed dead last. Arr.

Whee, been listening to the Final Fantasy 4 music all day. I figured out how to play Rydia's theme and some others on the piano today at M&J's house, at least.
Oren and I drove down to Tacoma to see a Rainiers game. Jeff (Damienroc) was meeting us there. I also managed to go and meet up with some of the folks from Lookout Landing, formerly Leone For Third, one of the two top baseball blogs in Seattle. Jeff and Devin were there, and PositivePaul and PLU Tim and Mark, and Jon Wells and his wife. Jon Wells is cool because he edits the Grand Salami, which is that magazine you'll see people selling outside Safeco before Mariners games. And he gave me a free copy of the June issue :)

Anyway, we hung out a bit. I went down to the 51's dugout to see if I could catch Ryan Rupe and get him to sign my Nippon Ham Fighters yearbook from last year, but no dice, the pitchers hadn't come out yet...

...and they never really did, because it started raining around 7pm. And it didn't stop. Jeff and Oren and I sat around talking for like an hour and a half, which was kinda cool, but it kept raining and raining and raining, and eventually we gave up and left around 8:30pm.

(Guess what -- the game WASN'T rained out after all, they started the game around 9pm, and the Rainiers won, and Snelling hit a two-run homer, and I am sad I still haven't gotten to see him play this year)

Well, but we didn't know that. We went back to Jeff's apartment, and Eric showed up after a while, and we put Azumanga Daioh on the TV, and played some games... we played San Juan, and Uno, and Buried Treasure, and I forget what else. Wooko eventually woke up and came out to the living room for a bit but he looked and sounded pretty sick :( so we couldn't get him to play anything with us. So we went to Mory's for breakfast-like food after a while. I'd never been there before, and got an SOS or whatever, which was basically like, gravy with meat in it over hash browns, which was interesting.

And then I did the whole driving home thing. I wish Tacoma was like, closer, or at least had less obnoxious traffic. And I still want to go back to a Rainiers game, dammit! I wonder if I should try to make it to Saturday or Sunday's game... I also was sad because I wanted to see Norihiro Nakamura play. (He's on the 51s.) I did see him come out of the dugout... the main thing is, I just don't scuppering feel like driving back to Tacoma. Sigh.
