In Philly

At my dad's apartment, with my uncle. We are trying (unsuccessfully) to hack his 24" iMac :)

Had a hoagie and birch beer and Tastykakes. Still not crying. Will see my brother in a bit and stuff though. Funeral tomorrow. Hmm.

Boot from an install disc. That should give you access to just about everything on the hard drive. I'm not sure if you can reset the Mac OS user passwords that way, though.

It's refreshing to know that the files aren't actually encrypted in any meaningful way. If a service can crack them, I guarantee someone else can.

Remember--if you get to any prompt asking, "Do you want to play a game?" the correct answer is "no".

I thought the correct answer was "global thermonuclear war."

I've reading LJ so irregulary-- just heard the news about your Dad. I'm so sorry for your loss. Had to be a shock, even under the circumstances.

You might contact an Apple Store to inquire about how to handle stuff on his iMac. Folks there tend to be really good with dealing with customers, even in odd situations like this. I'm guessing there's one in Philly, otherwise contacting them online might help.

I'm surprised he didn't leave the passwords somewhere for you to find.

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad.

You've probably already done this, but if you can log in to his account, you should be able to use Keychain Access, which stores lots of passwords. So if he ever uses the "remember this password" feature on a website or something, it will be in there.
