Preliminary postseason post

I have to stop staring at numbers.

I came up with a new random arbitrary metric to try to predict the postseason, like I did last year. It's a different metric than I used last time, though. I don't like what it gives me, but I'm going to post it anyway. I'll run last year's metric tomorrow night and see what it comes up with.

Anyway, it says the following (which surprisingly actually agrees mostly with what [profile] damienroc was telling me last night... shame I hadn't run these yet when I talked to him, heh)

ALDS:
Angels beat the Yankees in 4
White Sox beat the Red Sox in 5
NLDS:
Padres beat the Cardinals in 5
Braves beat Houston in 3

ALCS:
Angels beat the White Sox in 5
Padres beat the Braves in 5

WS:
Angels maul the Padres in 5

However, I want to point out that my heart still tells me either the White Sox or Cardinals are taking it all this year.

EDIT (10/4, 4pm): Jake Peavy is out with a broken rib or something. Good-bye, Padres. I'm running new numbers tonight.

Braves? Our division, eff them.
Astros? Beat us for the wild card, eff them.
Cardinals? Eff them, still, for J.D. Drew and Scott Rolen.
American League? Yankess, Red Sox, DH, All-Star Game, enough already, eff them.

Go Padres!

(Although it's gonna be the Cardinals, I'm sure of it...)

I, too, sort of feel the Cardinals are mad as hell and ain't gonna take it anymore, and will end up in the Series again, if not winning it.

Sadly, I think the Red Sox used up all their steam. We'll see.

ALSO CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ORIHOLES FOR AN EIGHTH STRAIGHT LOSING SEASON. HIP-HIP... AAARRGGH.

You have the Padres winning it?!?!

Er, winning the NL anyway. That's crazy talk.

Padres? In the World Series?

Nuh-uh. Not a chance in hell. A team that limped it's way into the playoffs and came close to not finishing above .500? Cardinals maul the Padres. The NL West was /terrible/ this year. If any team had been passable or healthy in that division, someone could have had a banner year. But I'm putting a 'Bet Against' sign on the NL West until further notice.

Braves/Houston I won't touch. I don't bet for or against the Braves except in the World Series, in which the AL is going to win against them pretty well every time.

White Sox will take out the Red Sox. The Red Sox had to push like mad just to make it in and had to get some help from the Cleveland Chokers.

Gotta go with my Yankees over the Angels. Yankees fan, gotta pull for my boys. Yankees want revenge for 2002.

I'm going to predict Yankees/Cardinals, with the Yankees in 7. Though it wouldn't surprise me to see the Braves in there over the Cardinals. But, my gut says this is the Cardinals' year to take the NL Crown.

Now, if we can merge the NL West into the other two divisions and just take the top two from each NL Division, we might be onto something...

I'm not sure what metric Deanna used to figure the Padres. My initial gut choices were quite similar, except that I had Boston taking the White Sox.

The reason for the Padres? Simple, they're 12-8 against the other three NL teams. If you remove Houston (who I don't think they'll play), they're 9-4. They went 4-3 against St. Louis for the year, and an amazing 5-1 against Atlanta.

However, that said, if St. Louis manages to beat the Padres, the NL's a tossup.

For the AL, if I were going to prioritize the strength of the teams, I'd go Anaheim, Boston, New York, Chicago. Anaheim's the strongest (and hottest) team going into the playoffs. Chicago almost gave Cleveland a spot in the playoffs. In the battle between Anaheim and Boston, I'm inclined to reverse my earlier gut prediction and say Anaheim's going to come out on top. I still don't see the ChiSox topping Boston, though.

It's nice to see another Yankees fan in the world. I feel so alone in this world. But I really don't think the Yanks are quite as rock-solid as they used to be back in the late '90s. The White Sox look pretty good, so I'm betting on them to win it all. Plus, White Sox fans have been suffering longer than Red Sox fans with a miniscule fraction of the public angst and agony, so I'm pulling for them in the absence of Yankees.

And, uh, the2belo? Try being a Pirates fan. I'll kidnap Spin Williams myself if I need to. He doesn't need to die, he just needs to stop being a pitching coach.

Yes, congratulations to Chunichi's Iwase for breaking the single season saves record. That's pretty much the only thing I have to be happy about baseballwise.

Well if things keep going the way they're going for Baltimore I might be able to say "I feel your pain" in a couple more years' time. The last time the O's (then the Browns) had this long a losing season streak was in the 50s, and the only thing that brought them out of that was... moving to another city. *shiver*
