I believe it was at IZ's only free bemani night ever, by the Para Para machine. I think we talked for a little while, but I don't remember exactly what was said or anything.

Next memory I have of you is just putting two and two together. "Oh, that girl is DR4B on the BBS! Okay!"

Yeah, so the first time I remember seeing you was actually at DM4 - we were both in Standard Tech, and you had a big cheering group and were really proud of full comboing AM-3P Standard.

But I'm not sure when I talked to you. I think you came to my first Bemani party and I barely knew who you were aside from "plays PPP".

I think the first time we actually met was at am IM volleyball game. I believe you were playing on the court next to the kilties and i managed to hit you with a runaway volleyball. You made a comment about the first time we actually meet I tried to kill you, I laughed and probably turned red and I think Mikey formally introduced us.

I also remember at some point trying to convince you to play cymbals in kiltie and to come to drumline functions.

Yeah, I think the first time I really remember meeting you was with Mikey at a Sunday Movie, although I might be wrong. I definitely remember the volleyball thing though. Hmmm...

lessee...I certainly met you through blackpaladin, and probably pretty close to Mudge A211. Did you and Trev walk into the room that first night bk2w were watching movies together, and you were just really confused about him having a girl there? Yeah, I think that's it.

Yup, that sounds about right. I definitely met you first with Brian in the infamous Mudge A-211, then we ended up pledging APhiO together, then you were my roomate for a semester... and yeah, wow, 9 years ago. Isn't that scary?

If I didn't remember, it's included on your "interesting things about my Live Journal friends" webpage. But, of course, I do remember.

It was way back, in "Jason fails out of Carnegie Mellon: Part I: Depression and Radio." I was in my dorm, Doherty Hall, but it wasn't in my room. I forget whose room it was, though.

I was wearing my original issue illegal "Shpidah!" tee shirt, and you mentioned that you knew the person who designed it.

(Later, I would temporarily trade that beloved shirt to Penny Kantrowitz for a Billy Joel "River of Dreams" shirt. Unfortunately, we lost touch and the temporary became permanent, and I was left holding the sucky collateral. I mean, Billy Joel's nice and all, but that was "Shpidah!" I do foolish things when I like a girl.)

We didn't really get to know each other that well until "Jason fails out of Carnegie Mellon: Part II: Depression and Scotch 'n' Soda." I didn't remember you when we re-met, but you, with your photographic memory, remembered me.

And, speaking of photography, my default Live Journal picture, which also appears on the non-headshot side of my theatre résumé was photographed by you. Fortunately, I may need to abandon that picture soon. Not because it's bad, but because I've apparently lost so much weight that it no longer looks like me! Woot!

Yup, I totally remember meeting you up in Doherty during my bagger weekend. It was Doherty C-14: Sonia Chandra was my bagger host. I think you were there visiting one of her roomates, but I can't remember any of their names, of course.

I still have my shpi-dahh shirt of course :)

I even think the next time we met, at KGB two years later, one or both of us were wearing TMBG shirts, which is how I made the connection.

I'm glad you've lost so much weight! It'd be great to see you again someday :)

I was visiting CMU, and I thought you were one of the reasons why shawn was Not Interested In Me Again, so I was all prepared to be intimidated by you. Then you had a really cool shirt and really cool hair and you weren't intimidating at all, so I stopped being scared. :)

Oh no, you're kidding... I never knew about the Shawn half of it. Especially since he wasn't interested in me as far as I knew. I remember meeting you mostly as "Shawn's cool friend Wednesday who draws anime people", back when anime still meant Ranma 1/2 to me.

But the funny part is, you met me while I was still coming off of four months of virtual anorexia; I remember you describing me as "tall, skinny, long hair, wears long hippie skirts a lot" on that random "Do you know Deanna?" thread on the BOFH or Linux or whatever mailing list... and at the time I was not skinny at all, had short hair, and had given up on skirts. I hadn't heard anyone describe me as skinny in at least 4-5 years at that point :(

Yeah... we met online because of Carolee's journal... then we met at IZ like a month after I moved here I think. I was playing some PPP and DDR, and you turned around on PPP like "Are you Deanna?" and I was like "uh... yeah!" and you were like "I'm Zannah!", and I was just not sure what at all to say because I am usually easily intimidated by pretty people, so I was really intimidated by you. But we did para, and I think Dylan from Team Metricks was there too, 'cause I seem to remember sitting next to the DDR machine with him and you and that weird guy Eric, and maybe your sister? Oh well.

The way I met you online was by going through the dearly-loved, sadly-missed "Most similar interests to yours" list here on LJ. Out of the top 20 or 30, apart from people who were on my Friends list already, there were only about three or four interesting journals. Yours was one of them.

We met at the first KGB meeting of the Fall 1995 semester. It would have been late August. Josh introduced us. I think you might have had purple hair at the time. I don't remember much else, though.

You know, I barely remember now, but weren't you and Melissa Kaplan dating waaaaay back then? Because I associate meeting you with meeting her, but I can't remember why. But yeah, I always knew you from KGB... then you pledged APhiO like a semester or so after I went inactive. Weird. Anyway, I only remember good things about hanging out with you in KGB... even boothing :) You and James Cheney always struck me as being the "most subtle" yet "most true to the spirit of the organization" KGB members.

Our paths could have crossed while you were in Gov's school and I was in pre-college. But it didn't happen then. While waiting for the bus to go on the Clipper Ship Cruise during Orientation '94, it was. I shouted out "Red Dwarf" into the croud, and eventually found you, Ben Cordes, Ryani Ingram and others.

Yeah, that's so weird how that was! Since I did meet Chris Hanson during that summer of '93, and he was your friend/roomate... agh! Yes, I remember the Clipper ship, and then the subsequent year of being Lewandowskis, playing cards and games, taking CS classes, etc together. That was fun. I still remember how crazy your room in Morewood was, with that third roomate of yours who stacked the bunkbeds into a triple bunk, which always seemed crazy.

I fell out of touch with you when I dropped out of APhiO and you went staff, but I was glad we got to know each other again on CS Zephyr and at Greyhawk D&D, before I skipped town. :)

I met Dee in person sometime during my sophmore year of high school (91/92), although I can't remember the actual first time we met. I'd actually known her for a while before that from ddial. I'm actually curious if Dee remembers any more than I do...

I know I met you *after* I met Josh and Ben.
I know I met Josh in 1990 (after first talking to him on a BBS in 1988).
I know I met Ben in 1991.
I know I met you before the June 1992 Tyler Park DDial picnic.
I know you were #111 THE FLASHER on the Savage Frontier ddial.

I remember hanging out with you and Josh and Lizzie and Ben for RHPS. And that was definitely before that summer of 92, because of Meira and Ed and all that crap. And before you left for a semester in Israel. But I honestly can't pinpoint a time... I don't remember coming over all the time until 1993 though, after you got back, when I would live at your house or Chuckie's for the weekend or whatever. I remember being at Deb's house when I found out I got into CMU though. And coming out for bagger weekend with you and Ben, and us meeting all those crazy people. And of course all of the jokes from hanging out in Boy Scouts... and TMBG shows, and whatever else.

I think if nothing else you win the "Deanna's most often roomate" award, though... and the "Best Deanna's Dad Story" award...

You showed up for a job interview and you actually seemed to understand programming, which put you ahead of most of the tech writers I've interviewed. So then I gave you my "what's wrong with this reference page?" test and you found all the booby traps I had in there, including the ones I only expected senior geek-writers to get. So I figured we had to hire you, and then you even turned out to be a cool person. :-)

That interview still sticks out as one of the crowning achivements of my life :) Because I think Claritech really shaped a lot of how I work as a technical writer, and it sort of embodies what I think the ideal environment for a programmer writer should be like. I have never since then gotten to say things like "Why is that method static? You might as well make a consistent interface and not have to change the API later.." and had people go "Hey, good call." It was like a place where you did a project, proved yourself, the whole company knew what you were capable of. At Amazon I find myself having to reprove myself all the time to get the same level of respect I had at Claritech.

Anyway, I remember how it took me like four months before I got up the courage to ask you about your eyesight. And then a few months after that, Ralph started inviting you and Dani to his Sunday dinners, which is where I really got to know you guys, and was good, because it meant we continued to stay in touch after the Claritech implosion. I still regret having only made it to one On The Mark concert in all the time I was in Pittsburgh, too.

I was stepping out of my AA meeting just after telling them that I was back on the hooch after 30 sober days and they couldn't stop me. You were just leaving your weekly "Save the Galapagos Tortoise" meeting that happened to be next door. We collided and I dropped my five bottles of raspberry schnopps while you dropped your sculpture of Alex Trebek made out of 9,648 matchsticks. We both looked at the swirling mixture of schnop-sticks and laughed and laughed and laughed. We've been best of friends ever since.

Wow. That's amazing that you still remembered when that was... but yeah, I remember first reading your LJ a little because Pace linked to it. Then you turned out to be in all these other DDR circles... and yeah, that weekend I came down for Julie and Jason's wedding and you ditched us to go to a DDR tournament :P It's all good though. And without you I woulda never pushed myself to get all of those crazy Heavy AA's and all... shame I hurt my foot playing too much DDR with you guys and haven't added much to my scores since, though.

I honestly don't remember the first time I met you, but I do remember seeing you with WRCT a bit later and being like "hey, I've met that guy... HI ALAN!" or something. I never did ever get to know you that well, but you always seemed like a nice guy with good taste in music :)

Hahaha! Scary Adam Pearson! Yeah, I met him in Ballroom, he started right around when I did, but did all the team stuff so he got insanely good insanely quick. And his birthday is like 3 days before mine.

I remember you on graffiti, that's for sure - I had you and Mike Walsh confused at first, maybe? But then you posted so much more stuff, and poetry and whatnot. Remember the CONTEST POST? That was like one of the COOLEST things ever, even if it was kinda ridiculous at the time... I wonder if we could revive that on LJ... nah, it'd never work.

And then there were Sunday movies, and Kiltie Band, and well, you were always such a fun guy to be around :) I remember when you were Kiltie Secretary and you had these great questions which always lent themselves well to me answering with pi or e or other geeky stuff. Or just answering "Bob Rost", which next year changed to always answering "Mike Wallace" :)

And of course... I remember your battle cry of CHEROKEE RED! Whee.

Man, I will never ever live that birthday thing down... do you realize that at my last pledge review when I was pledging APhiO, they asked "Can you name everyone in the room... and their bigs... and their grandbigs... AND ALL OF THEIR BIRTHDAYS?" And I went around and named everyone, their bigs and grandbigs, and for about 2/3 of the people, their birthday as well :)

I remember meeting you through Julie, or at least finding out your name, but I can't remember the circumstances. It might have also had something to do with Clusters, of course...

I don't remember whether I first met you in the Lounge or in Kiltie Band, but I do remember the first time we met on-line. I was in one the Wean clusters doing homework or somesuch, when suddenly a window appeared on my desktop conveying greetings from you. I had never seen this before, so I was at a loss for how to respond... clicking on the window just made it go away! You sent me a few more messages, possibly mocking my inability to respond, before you educated me about zephyr.

I remember meeting you in the lounge as "Carl's friend from highschool". And I invited you to our first shady house party around Labor Day time, although I don't remember whether you actually came with.

We were in World History together that fall though, remember? I sat with you and Nate and fell asleep and you let me borrow your notes. And I saw you guys in Kiltie when I'd come up in the stands to visit Carl. And the lounge, and... of course, I think we didn't *really* become good friends until a year or two later, when we worked at Claritech in the summer of 2000. Good times :)

I arrived at PGSS '97 in the back seat of my parents' car, and before I'd even gotten out all the way, this bouncy TA-looking person looks at me curiously and goes "Jeff?"

It turns out they'd memorized our ID photos ahead of time to be able to greet us and help unload. Thus began an enormously fun five weeks, ending up with Deanna taking us on a 3 a.m. tour of the unseen parts of CMU.

Man, I pulled that stunt on so many people that day that it's hard for me to even remember which students I did or didn't get right. (I had the highest percentage of all the TAs though, even Jeff Temple... they were all astounded how I'd know *everyone's* name as of like the 2nd or 3rd day of the program!)

Anyway, the way I remember first really talking to you a lot is twofold:

1) You were in my team project.

2) You wrote down EVERY FRICKIN' THING I SAID! AND PUT IT IN A QUOTE FILE!!!! AAAAH!!! :)

You were the first to really call me Processor Five on a regular basis, IIRC (and probably one of the few people left who still remembers that as one of my nicknames). I remember how totally goofy it was hanging out with you and Keith Bonawitz, and Ben Ingram, the latter two I have not heard from since that PGSS year, I think. Every year there were students who'd blow you away with how much CS stuff they knew, and you were definitely one of them.

Good times, good times... and you really are one of the few students from that year I've really kept in touch with, even if it's sometimes just for things like "Jeff, why on earth did someone from Cornell email me complaining that they read my quote file and wasted two hours?" Or "Doesn't everybody know Deanna?"

That would be Spring '97, at the SCS undergrad picnic. It was sunny. I sat down next to some people I vaguely knew on the part of the mall closest to the Wean entrance. I forget exactly why, but at some point you were referred to by name, and I, who had previously gleaned a favorable and impressive idea of you from what bboard posts of yours I saw, spoke the line which I will not repeat here.

Then I completely forgot about you for a summer until you showed up in the lounge studying Japanese, at which point I don't remember if I remembered your name, because, unlike you, I really suck at that sort of thing. :P

but what i remember is having a conversation with you at 1:30 in the morning and just finding out we had all of this weird stuff in common. like you said something about always having your close friends live half an hour away, or whatnot. i don't know, you were just so *different* from everyone else, and you seemed to like a lot of the same things i did, and...
