South Pacific
Feb. 10th, 2010 02:37 amCarl and I went to see South Pacific at the 5th Avenue Theater tonight. I wish I could say more about the show itself, but I think there was a good reason I had forgotten what the hell actually happens in South Pacific; the plot is dated and the dialogue is dated. I hadn't forgotten the music, though, and that was pretty good. And in this performance the actual direction and execution of the show were fantastic; I spent the first act going "Where the HELL are the microphones?!" marvelling at how they somehow either had body mics or none with those swimsuits, and admiring the way they transitioned between scenes; when the sailors spent the entire intermission building the Thanksgiving Follies stage before our eyes, I thought that was just yet another really nice touch. The sailor ensemble was great. I wasn't that into the guy playing Emile, but the Nellie was really good, as was Cable -- and it turns out the guy playing Cable, Anderson Davis, was actually a CMU Drama department grad (seems to be 2006). It's funny, because when Carl and I used to go see a lot of CMU drama plays, I'd joke how "we pay $10 to see these guys on stage now, but in a few years it's going to be ten times that..."
We ran into Jack and Llyne after the show, which was bizarre since I'd just sent Jack email this morning saying it'd be nice to hang out while I'm here.
Oh, for the rest of the day I worked on some stuff and then went downtown to meet up with Carl. Due to bus snafus and whatnot we ended up crunched for dinnertime and just went to Westlake, where I got Thai which was really good, and he got Indian which he made faces at. Yay. There seems to be a Chipotle downtown now though, wish we'd noticed it earlier.
