Sometimes I wonder what "normal" bathing methods and times are.

Don't worry, I won't use this data against anyone, even if they end up being a houseguest (although I'll know whether to put out washcloths for you...)

I apply the soap to my hand, and then to the skin, usually cleaning my hand before resoaping it. It keeps the soap free of hairs and other ickies.
