Friday Five and other stuff.

A belated thank you to all the people who sent me birthday wishes and presents and such. I'm sorry I was in such a crappy mood on my actual birthday. I'm also feeling pretty awful about the fact that Eli's family sent me a bunch of birthday gifts and my family only sent me cards... but I don't know how to comment on it any further without sounding stupid, so I won't. I suck.

On the bus this morning I was thinking about music. Here is an odd thing. Maybe You Should Drive has been my favorite Barenaked Ladies album for a really really long time. But "Everything Old Is New Again" did not actually become my favorite BNL song until I saw them in concert in the summer of 2001. They said something like "Here's a song from our second album... HAHA, listen to that, more people are out there cheering than the number of people who actually BOUGHT that album." And so I was really hoping for like, "Life In a Nutshell" or "Intermittently" or something... and then they played "Everything Old Is New Again". And I was all disappointed. And then I listened to it. And I realized what a GOOD SONG it is. And I went home and listened to it some more. And now it is my favorite BNL song.

Well, anyway. The same thing has now happened with TMBG, for the second time. The first time it was with "They'll Need a Crane" and with seeing it on the original TMBG video collection like ten years ago. The second time was on Wednesday. I was at the concert and they played "Pet Name", with the lights totally turned off, etc. And I really hadn't appreciated that song on Factory Showroom before - heck, I don't think all that highly of FS as an album, period. But suddenly listening to it at the concert I was like, "whoa." And I got home and listened to it again, and now it's just been in my head since.

And the funny thing is that all three of these songs are vaguely related in subject matter, style, speed, etc. I'm not sure what it is that causes me to completely overlook songs like this for so long. Anyway, tangent aside...

1. Would you consider yourself an organized person? Why or why not?

No, no, no, no, no. I am chaos. Though I'm pretty organized for someone whose life is mostly chaos, I guess.

2. Do you keep some type of planner, organizer, calendar, etc. with you, and do you use it regularly?

No, I store everything in my head. It usually works.

3. Would you say that your desk is organized right now?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA no.

4. Do you alphabetize CDs, books, and DVDs, or does it not matter?

I used to, but I haven't really since moving across the country. My Japanese CDs are in alphabetical order by kana, my English CDs are about 60% in alphabetical order. My books are organized by section but that's about it.

5. What's the hardest thing you've ever had to organize?

Birthday dinners for myself or anyone else.

People celebrate birthdays in different ways. Robin doesn't celebrate birthdays and I don't know that many people around here, so for the last 2 years, my birthday has gone quietly uncelebrated except for an e-mail or a phone call from home. Personally, I haven't received a birthday gift in years... no wonder I'm having trouble remembering. I'm highly expecting my 23rd to come and go with nary a whisper, as I wake up and look at my watch and see 6:57 staring me back in the face and think "Oh wow, I'm 23. It's too damn early. *snore*"

And I guess it's okay -- I like being low-key, for the most part.

So, umm... I think I lost my point...

Interestingly, Pet Name has been in my head since I saw it on your setlist the other day. Don't know why that one song stuck out at me.
