Today was an interesting day, that's for sure.
I don't remember the afternoon exactly except that it was pretty crazy. We had a whole lot of people around the school for various reasons, which isn't typical of a Wednesday afternoon.
At 4pm I did the aforementioned prospective student interview, and when everything quieted down at 4:30 I put on my Halloween costume (as I mentioned, I dressed up as the Fighters' centerfielder Hichori Morimoto) with a little help from one of Eri's students (who is like 14 and thinks that I am both completely batshit crazy and also completely cool, depending on what day of the week it is). The no-hair skullcap didn't quite fit over the back part of my hair, and the color is a little bit off, but whatever.
I'm in my room around 4:50pm and I hear voices in the lobby, so I poke my head out, and Duane makes a face at me, and I'm like "Yeah, I have a Halloween costume," so he said "Oh, come out and show us!" So I did. And Duane's like "WTF?" and his student says "Oh my god! You are being HICHORI?!?!?!"
That rocked.
Turns out she's from Nagoya and is both a huge Dragons fan and a huge Fighters fan, just like me. She loves Inaba because he's from Aichi, and went to college near the Tokyo Dome so she used to go to Fighters games all the time. She took a picture of me on her phone, and we showed off baseball pictures to each other and talked about the Japan Series. I showed her some of my Dragons pictures, and the Inaba home run ball, and my picture with Hichori's dad. It was awesome.
I spent most of the rest of the evening teaching classes and/or just hanging out talking to people. Nobody else wore a costume, not even Eri and Duane, but everyone thought that it was really funny and cool that I had one on. Not many people knew who Hichori is, though once I showed them my Fighters book pictures of him, they were all like "oh! that guy!" One of Duane's other students who I'd never talked to before also turns out to be a big baseball geek so we talked about it for a while... and Eri's students all kept getting out their cellphones to take pictures of me, which was pretty funny.
The 9pm student who had originally suggested I dress up as Hichori came in and saw me and just started cracking up. I think seeing the smile on his face made all of it worth it. He got out his phone and took a picture and said "I have to send this to [other student] so he knows what he's missing today!!"
