I won a crayon train game!
Jan. 10th, 2005 01:09 pmLJ ate my entry last night, which made me very bitter.
bpr had invited me to come play British Rails with a bunch of people, but I wasn't sure whether I'd feel healthy enough to go. Well, eh. After being awake for a few hours and not having any major coughing attacks I decided to risk it. I was a little late, but it was okay as I showed up at the same time as another player.
So it was 5 people: me, Brian, and three of his coworkers: Dave, whose house we were at, Rick, who owned the game, and John, who had played a bunch of crayon train games before. I went into the game with my normal fatalistic attitude -- and sure enough, the first two events came up consecutively and effectively knocked me out of the game -- they took out four track segments of mine over rivers, costing a total of 13 cash to fix, but I only had 4 cash at the time and no way to reach any of my contracts. Fortunately, Rick bailed me out by building one segment to attach my track to his; then I took his track for two turns to drop off a contract for 14 (effectively paying him 8 to get myself 6), but after that I was able to drop off a contract for 31 and get myself rolling again. Everything past then went pretty well, especially since I had originally built tracks from Manchester towards Glasgow, I got the best path for mine. After I had the four cities linked, and I was the first to do so, I dropped off two tickets in Swansea. One new contract was clay to Glasgow for 62, and another was construction materials to Plymouth for 31. Plymouth required taking someone else's tracks for like 6 turns, but I figured it was worth the opportunity cost, and I was near a place to get conmats. So I did that, along the way dropping off an 11 contract from steel from Birmingham to Manchester, getting a contract for beer to Ayr for 40, backtracking 3 turns to get the beer, and then chugging up towards Glasgow. Well, once I delivered the two contracts in Scotland, I had around 235 cash. You need 250 to win. The nearest contract was oats to Lincoln for 25, so I did that, and 7-8 turns later, holy crap, I actually won a train game. In all the years (and I've lost track of how many it's been) that I have played crayon train games, this is the first time I ever won one. It's really totally in the contracts...
Top ten things overheard during British Rails:
10. "I need a cow."
9. "I'm going to get two rubbers and an oil."
8. "You're going to get a fish for the halibut?"
7. "I have the dinner contract. Sheep, cattle, and beer."
6. "Hm, where do you get beer from? Besides Dave's fridge, that is."
hmm... 5-1 will have to come later if I remember any.
John took off quickly after the game but the other four of us hung out talking for a bit. We might get together again to play Puerto Rico sometime snice Dave and Rick had never played it. That'd be fun, I hope it works out. After that, I went home because it was like 10pm and I needed to take antibiotics. Plus, the roads were getting icy, which is scary for me.
I played PP for a few hours after that. Played spades with
buoren, and then dragged him and Weaver with me to move/pillage a ship from Alpha to Turtle. And I even had crewmates come along! Woohoo for being in a crew again. (The ship I was moving has a kind of funny story though. Chernabog collected red/natural Tenches, and he quit the game, and I kind of wanted some sort of memorial/tribute to him. And I of course had no Tenches because I'd given mine to Chern as a present a while back. So I noticed that YHY had the Half Tench sitting on Alpha. Barrister agreed to trade it to me for another ship, provided it was painted the same... aqua, grey, and purple. So I went and painted my Fine Silverside to those colors and traded it to him. So, now I had a Tench, but it was painted Barrister Ugly, and all my paint was at my apoth on Turtle. So I had to go move it to Turtle to paint it red/natural.) Hung out with the crew a bit after; I guess maybe Sinlaeshel doesn't hate me after all, because we have a lot of stuff in common. An' then Weaver made me play Spades with him. (He's picking up the slack of being my best friend in-game now, so I owe it to him.) We're both up to Legendary now. :) So I was up a little too late. But good times, honestly.
Also, the Canadian Brass is great music, but not so great car music. Sigh.
Compiling gcc takes bloody forever. Arr.
