bemani night at IZ
Sep. 19th, 2002 01:12 amToday there was a Bemani party at Illusionz. All Bemani games were on free play from 6-10pm. I was really tired at work, so even though I got home at 6:15, I napped until 7, then changed, etc, drove to IZ. Got there around 8.
It was PACKED. Everyone who's anyone in the Seattle DDR scene was there. MAX2 had insane card lines, so I didn't even try. I got to play one game because I asked this one asian guy who looked nice enough to let me play alongside him if I could... and he did... and then he kept saying "is this song ok?" "is this song ok?" and I was like "please, pick whatever. I'm really glad just to get on this machine at all. thank you so much," and he was like "ok, how about this song?" it was funny. He was nice though. I felt bad because he later told me he had been waiting for 2 hours :( I lost my Broadway City card! I used it to hold my place on the USA machine and it SLIPPED INTO THE MACHINE! The screen ledge isn't bolted on very well I guess. Sigh. I played quite a bit of USA, Solo 4th+ and Disney because they didn't have such long lines. I also played some PPP. I can actually do the routines for Yesterday and One Night in Arabia pretty well now, which makes me happy, and I learned most of the routine for "Sexy Sexy" because it came up as the 4th nonstop song a few times. There was a guy who played a whole lot and kept picking Deluxe, Velfarre, O Sole Mio, and Love Again Tonight. So I shadowed him a decent amount because I know all of those songs REALLY well. And Derick and Dylan and their PPP crew were there and I talked to them a bit. I didn't play any other Bemani though... mostly because they were taken most of the time and I would have felt pretty silly playing since I suck so much. It's daunting to get up in front of really talented players and suck.
I did manage to introduce myself to a few people, notably two who said "what a cool shirt!" (I am wearing my Pokemon NYC Store Grand Opening shirt) My usual response was "The store is scary though. Imagine two whole floors of Pikachu." :) So I did talk to a few random people, who were really nice, but none of the really really good DDR people. I mean, it's just tough to approach a big group and go "hi, I'm, uh, Deanna, yeah, I read your BBS, okay, bye" or whatever. But I did approach small groups. Mostly I wandered around alone feeling kind of dumb, but I got to watch a lot of bemani, so that was good. It was funny, I saw the guy I played against in Dance Magic 4, and he was doing all of these heavy doubles on MAX2, and really well, too. I wonder if he's a new DDR player so the month since DM4 has really improved him, or if he was just slummin' it in Standard Tech? Anyway, he was also doing some doubles on the Disney machine and the stage is apparently dislodged again so it was swaying back and forth as he was playing. Scary, but he SS'ed all the songs I saw him do :)
Oh, and I played some Medieval Madness, finally! Sadly, the gate on IZ's game is broken, and it also is tilted weird so the ball comes back different places than I'm used to. I managed a 25 million game, but replay is at 35, so... oh well.
There were a particular bunch of people I really did want to talk to tonight, but I somehow couldn't get myself to actually go talk to them. It's that whole fear of "They're going to think I'm a freak and then I'll never become friends with them" acting up again. I suck. I stayed until the absolute end of the party (when the staff literally cut the power to the arcade machines, at like 10:15) and wandered outside with people, and basically sort of wandered off to my car... then realized, huh, there were still a lot of people standing there. Maybe I should try to hang out. But I had already started to drive off. I figured it would look really dumb if I drove back like "can I hang out with you guys? huh? please?" So I didn't. I drove home being sort of sad over it all and sang along loudly to my DDR mix tape.
Then I called
dvarin and talked to him for 2 hours and then I felt a lot better. Sigh, I need someone like him out here... best friends are hard to come by.
