Nov. 7th, 2001

Work has been a hassle today. We are doing these "classes", see, and so I was not here for the weekend so I'd only done half of Friday's homework. I missed the Monday and Tuesday classes. So today I finished the rest of Friday's homework and did half of Monday's. Unfortunately that means I'll still have to do Tuesday's and Wednesday's tomorrow.. I feel so hopelessly behind now. Blah. At least it doesn't seem like people are "grading" the assignments. Carl told me I got mentioned as having some "best of" for the Javadoc assignment, at least, which I would have been very worried if I didn't manage to get, being the doc department and all. :)

The main thing is, they moved a lot of CVS stuff over the weekend, so when I came in today I had to get CVS to work, which wasn't exactly trivial. I seem to have gotten it up and working again now though, which is good.

I went for sushi for dinner tonight, which is not exactly wise after getting over a stomach flu, but I ate only 2.5 plates of sushi and some tempura. Charlie actually not only finished the full five plates, he finished three mini-plates afterwards. Very impressive - he now holds the "My god, he eats more than Kevin" award, in my mind. And oddly, Tom 7 also finished 5 plates, where Kevin came up two pieces short of five plates. Another guy who was with us, Brian, ate so slowly, even more slowly than me, that he managed to skip plate 4 and go to plate 5 because the waitress just thought that he had to be up to that plate already.

We had some fascinating discussions about videogames and stuff, but ended up just going back to campus afterwards. I would usually have writing group to go to (hmm, I hope Drew never reads this entry) but I had played catch-up at work so much that I didn't get a chance to read his story, and to be honest I didn't feel like going. So Charlie and I went to look for people to play bridge with, but we didn't find any. I ended up in the lounge for a quickish game of Tigris with Dan and Jcreed and Dkitchin (I won, but by the skin of my teeth, with 7-7-7-12; if Jason had drawn the last tile and I hadn't gotten a last turn, I think I would have lost by 1 in the 3rd (everyone else was like 6-7-7-something)). Then I came back here to Whizbang to try to figure out more stuff.

Hence the title - catch-up and sushi.

Anyway, I was having a really good hair day or something today. I put my hair up in a partial ponytail and it decided to not only look smooth on top, but my hair has gotten to that "wow, your hair is really nice and long" stage, and every now and then I wear it this way and it looks even longer and nicer, when I am lucky and it isn't being annoying. It made me a lot happier than it should have - I tried to make an effort to chat with people in Wean and all, because I was feeling pretty, and it's nicer to talk to people when you feel pretty. Also, the stomach virus took off a lot of my water weight and a little more from eating less for a day or two.

Hmm, I have a lot of thoughts here but I'm not sure how much I want to share them. Lots of stuff about feeling pretty, wanting others to feel I'm pretty, and how to react to attractive people, especially when I'm in a pretty-feeling mindset. (Don't worry, Eli is my dearest darling, and finding other people attractive has no bearing on how I feel towards him.)

Well, I've been letting this stupid tool run for a while here, and I just don't get it. So I guess I'll go home. At least tomorrow's class should be easier, since it's on stuff I know already and being taught by someone cool. Oh, but he just stopped in my office to tell me about the homework he's coming up with, so maybe I'm wrong. We'll see.

Also, my throat feels scratchy, like the onset of strep. This is driving me nuts. If it doesn't feel better in the morning I'm going to cry.

I was frustrated this evening for a bit when I was checking mail in the cluster before coming here. I ran into my friend Paul, who was doing his OS homework. He was trying to use function pointers. Now, when Carl and that group were in OS 2-3 years ago I remember they asked some questions about that too, and back then I was still up on my C stuff, so I actually could, like, give reasonable answers about all the (void *) stuff. But looking at Paul's code tonight, I utterly couldn't remember anything about how they worked. Blah. And then Evan and Dave asked jokingly for me to do their 212 homework. I was like "Do you know how long ago I took 212?" Dave was like "3 years?" I was like "Let's just put it this way - it was in LISP when I took it." And I looked at their assignment and it was some sort of weird-ass tree stuff that I know I've never seen before and I had no clue how to do it. Blah.

Oh, so one last thing. This is from an email I got from my brother today:

> at the conference I met someone from cmu who said he knew you- John
> Langford or something like that. I said my sister went to cmu and he
> said he didn't know a rubin (from my name tag) I told him your first name
> and he said 'oh- dr4b - yeah I know her'

I guess it's more dr4biquity. Anyway, goodnight.
