Hollow Wean Weekend, Part 2
Oct. 28th, 2001 01:22 amGot a lot of sleep last night, which was good. Played some DDR in the morning, and Eli made waffles, yay.
We went to the mall, because Eli thought it would be cool to dress up as Milkman Dan for Halloween. Unfortunately, we had no luck in either the Halloween store or Spencer's in finding him a hat for the costume. So he had no costume. I, on the other hand, bought some white gloves, some gogo boots, and three wigs - a flourescent green one that will become a Charmy from DDR 3rd Mix costume someday (All I need now is a white minidress and a hat!), a burgundy wig which will be cut to become a Miho from Megatokyo costume someday, and a long blonde wig that.. I have no idea. Yuni Kaigui from DDR 4th mix maybe, or Sailor Something-or-Other, or whatever. We'll see.
So after that, we stopped back at home, I put on my Emi costume (if you haven't seen it, I have some pictures of it here) and we went to our first party of the evening, at Barbara's house. I brought DDR with me. We got there around 7, and Roman was still moving stuff in (he is apparently renting a room at Barbara and Mark's house for a few months since his lease was up this month and he's supposedly leaving town in two months).
It was fun. Bayani has gotten pretty good at DDR in the past year, so we could play a lot of the same songs. Actually, so Bayani has lost like 30 or 40 pounds dieting and playing DDR. I'm pretty impressed. He dressed in drag as his halloween costume, and it was actually pretty noticeable that he's gotten in much better shape. It was pretty cool actually because every past Halloween party I've been at that Bayani was also at involved him getting totally drunk and swearing at people and throwing up on the porch and stuff, but since he was playing DDR he didn't want to drink alcohol, etc. So it was an interesting and good change to note.
Hmm, I took a whole lot of pictures but I'll try to list the more interesting costumes here. Chris and George were dressed as Snow Crash characters (I've never read Snow Crash, unfortunately). Chris was Hiro Protagonist, with big blue robes and pizza boxes, and George was YT, with a funky skateboard thingy and stuff. Laura was dressed as some sort of winged butterfly thingy. Barbara was a gypsy. Regan and Greg showed up with shirts where Regan's said "Costume 5 cents" and Greg's said "Second costume 1/2 price!" or something. Marybeth and Marc wore random masks and hats, but not real costumes (though Marc had a cool staff he brought). Justin was a turtle, but he kept ditching the turtle part of his costume. Oh yeah, Justin was so adorable playing DDR. For those that don't know, Justin is Mark and Barbara's first son who is now like three years old and change. When we turned off DDR he was like "no put it back on!" Now keep in mind he couldn't actually play for real, but he really liked jumping around on the pad and hitting the buttons and he *especially* liked scrolling through the songs. We put on Disney's Rave for him and it was very cute, we'd be like "Hey, do you know who that is on the screen?" or "Do you know the song 'It's a Small World'?" and all. And then we'd put on the song so one of us would actually do the song, and Justin would just jump around all over the DDR pad and dance to the music. I tried to take pictures, but that's the sort of thing you can't capture in pictures, you really need a video camera to tape how positively adorable a three-year-old playing DDR really is. Whee. Hmm.. so Eric was dressed as a Centauri, but he doesn't have enough hair to really do it. Oh, Zarf showed up, but not dressed as anything. Bryan was dressed as something but I'm not sure what. Eeyore and Sharon showed up. Eeyore was dressed as... well... Eeyore. (For those who don't know him, Eeyore is actually Elliott Evans, whose userid at CMU is "ee0r", hence the nickname) He had a huge furry Eeyore suit, it was very cute. Oh, Connie and Jeff showed up as a priest and a catholic schoolgirl. The resemblance between Connie's costume and Bayani's costume was actually somewhat scary. Oh, yeah, the wackiest costume was Tom Maher, who showed up as a fairy princess (full with his beard and hairy legs). Heh.
So we decorated pumpkins for the pumpkin contest, and played DDR, and hung out for a while. Around 10:30, since we'd been there a while and since we'd told Pat Riley we would come to his party too, we left Barbara's party to head back to Oakland. (Barbara was nice enough to let me use her computer to look up Pat's address and stuff, which I forgot to do in advance.)
Pat's party was a little weirder for us. Firstly, he has a small apartment. Secondly, well, when I looked into the room I couldn't tell if I just didn't recognize people because of costumes or just seriously didn't know anyone there. So it was the sort of party that is fun if you are there to drink and hang out with people and all, but since I wasn't there to drink it was a little weird. Pat had a cool costume, though. He was half angel half devil, split down the middle. The coolest part was his hat, which was a headband with a devil's horn on one side and half a halo on the other side. There were some other cute costumes, like Elissa was dressed up as a "fashion victim", wherein she was wearing majorly mismatched clothes and had a slit throat. There was another girl who was a devil with a blue dress on... and George was wearing a hard hat that said on one side, "DSL Installman" and on the back "fictional character" or something like that.
I guess the thing was, at Barbara's since we had DDR set up there, when people said "What are you dressed up as?" I could just show them the character in DDR, and people actually thought that was pretty good. At Pat's I was like "I'm, uh... dressed up as a character from a video game.. yeah... um... yeah, have you heard of Dance Dance Revolution? No? Yeah... I'm a character from that..."
Anyway... oh, hmm. So at Pat's party I ran into Charlie, who plays bridge with some people I know, and who can eat more sushi than Kevin Watkins, but that's another story. Anyway, Charlie is quite good at bridge, or so I have heard. He also has quite a rant about the Flannery bridge convention (which I have steadfastly played for years and years). However, Charlie was very, very drunk. I also didn't recognize him at all in costume. But anyway, I wasn't sure exactly how drunk he was, so to test him, I said, "So, you have a bridge hand with five hearts, four spades, and twelve points. How do you open it?"
He replied, "I WOULDN'T BID FLANNERY! NO WAY! I OPEN ONE HEART."
I said, "You're not drunk enough. Go drink more."
Anyway, we didn't stay at Pat's all that long. We came home and made dinner; I made weird-ass tuna salad and Eli heated up some chili, and then I decided I wanted to listen to smile.dk, and I realized that I had actually bought their album "Smile Paradise" when I was in Japan and never actually listened to it. So I'm listening to it now. Whee!
So that's my Halloween parties for the year, since I'm not invited to any others. Though if anyone has any cool ideas about stuff to do on Wednesday, that would be neat.
I'm thinking I'd really like to hold a party sometime in November, too. Ideally it would be on the 20th of November (after the beatmania/DDR song "20 November") but since that's a Tuesday I doubt that will happen.
