Sometimes my creative silly side gets me into a lot of trouble, but at least it makes me giggle.
Yay, my new printer is hooked up now and it works! But I need a longer USB cable. Doh!

That's why the USB standard explicitly states that extension cables are not compliant. :)
Printers don't tend to have captive cables, so replacing it with a longer one shouldn't be difficult unless it's already pretty long.
Hubs are good, particularly because the printer is a self-powered device, so you don't have to worry about overloading the hub.
