Longer USB cable is good. USB "extension cables" are bad. As in "devices at the far end will start failing for no good reason."
There is a kind that'll work (they're usually called "USB repeaters" and they're obnoxiously expensive), but I've never seen that kind in a store. Stores only care the cheap kind that break randomly. Your best bet's to use a USB hub if you can't find a long-enough cable.

Printers don't tend to have captive cables, so replacing it with a longer one shouldn't be difficult unless it's already pretty long.
Hubs are good, particularly because the printer is a self-powered device, so you don't have to worry about overloading the hub.
