For me it's the other way around, but in the beginning I had next to no concept of filling the frame. These days I often still don't. :)

I think what's troubling you is called composition and maybe exposure. ;) These are the two biggest bugaboos in photography.

Also all the filming through fences is getting to me, perhaps -- I haven't been making the effort to put the lens up to the fence this year because I don't want to piss people off.
