lj-cut is for the weak... after carnival
I woke up today just in time to get dressed and run to campus for Mobot. Yay. It was raining on my way to campus but sunny once I got out to the mobot track around 12:15. The second mobot to go won the competition. It was awesome. It was named "Barney" and was pink and had a big face on the front. It got through all the gates, although what actually happened is, it got to the decision point and made the first two decisions correctly and then missed one, but realized "hey, I missed one" and CIRCLED BACK to go through the gate. That was the COOLEST mobot ever. Woo. I got to see a lot of people during mobot of course... Mark Stehlik was wandering around in a clown suit, and I saw
fleaplus and
puuj and
alibash and all those people, and Shelby was there, and Rehana, and Trey...
...and then of all the people in the universe I ran into WILL FRANK! Is that cool or what? For those who haven't known me for 7-8 years, Will was my pledge class's pledgemaster when I pledged APhiO in the fall of 1994. (I bet there are some of you going "Wow, you're in APhiO?" The answer is "Yes, but I went inactive in 1996.") Anyway, Will is way cool, and thanks to Ben and Jen and Mauricio and Aiton and me and all, Will is this semester's pledge class namesake, so he came back to visit. Whee! So I talked to him for a while - it turns out he's been back at Microsoft for the past N years, so I feel bad that I didn't visit him in Seattle, but then again I didn't know he was there. I did tell him I'm interviewing with MS though and he said "oh, let me put in a good word for you," and I told him about Eli and not two minutes later Eli showed up, so he and Will chatted for a while and I sort of tuned out since they were talking researchy things and I wanted to watch mobots, but... anyway, yay! Will is cool!
So, Norm P and I went to get lunch at the O. Medieval Madness was broken and turned off. Grr. After lunch I went back and tried to see Barney the mobot run again, but I missed it somehow. So I hung out in Wean with Neil and Jay and Dave for a bit. I saw Krista Contino, who I also haven't seen in like 2-3 years - as Dave put it, "it was like there were two Deannas bouncily talking about unemployment and stuff!" Anyway, after that I went to the CS lounge for a little while and talked to Rem and other people. Rem wrote a Tigris&Euphrates server in the past few weeks. It's actually quite cool, and I might help him test it.
Oh, so
jcreed and tom7 did one of the funniest things ever - I was changing rolls of film and taking a last shot on a roll - so I told them to pose with the lambda calculus on the whiteboard - so Tom drew a big cartoon lambda, and after that they posed with it - Jason did the "V" thing that Japanese people do in pictures, and Tom was like "nono, turn it upside down"... so instead of the two of them with V's, I have a picture of the two of them with LAMBDAS. IS THAT COOL OR WHAT? TOM7 AND JCREED ROCK MY WORLD.
So I went to Midway to look for the Miroslav concert at around 3:15... but it had been moved to the UC "due to rain". At the time it was like 85 degrees and sunny as shit. I ran into jcheney and took some pictures of the KGB booth and then went over to the UC. I caught the last 20 minutes or so of Miroslav. But I got to sit with all my old D&D gang... Jim, Ryan, Kyle, etc, and Erik from Whizbang was sitting in front of me. Heh. Oh, so my friend Deryck, who I also know from D&D and Kiltie, is the drummer for Miroslav. It was pretty cool, they were good indie rock and stuff. I got to say hi to Deryck after the set and tell him it was cool, and now I don't have to keep saying "i'll make it to a concert of yours someday! i promise!"
After that I went back to the lounge. I ran into Aaron Teske (!!!) who I didn't even know was going to be in town. Aaron is one of these people I have known for years and years and years and who shows up in my life every now and then and we chat and hang out and stuff. He is responsible for me watching all of Maison Ikkoku my sophomore year at CMU and my general year or two of being into anime. Currently he works for a company as a liaison to their China and Japan offices and I am insanely jealous, but that's another story. So, I played two games of Seafarers, one with Aaron and Carl and rjmccall and Brian R and dkitchin, and rjmccall won, and then we played a second game with Carl, rjmccall, Misha, dfroman, and Matt, which again rjmccall won. Whee. But, we had an overwhelming majority of wearing Snegurotchka's Castle t-shirts in the lounge for most of the time.
After the games, Eli and I were going out to Midway, except that about 10 minutes after we got there, the skies opened up and Midway was closed. We did get to go in the KGB booth and hide out from the storm a little bit in it though, and we saw Laura and
damion and stuff. So I wasted another hour or two in the CS lounge after that, playing Lost Cities with Carl, and then bridge with Rem and Carl and Charlie. It was a frustrating game, but fortunately I didn't play for that long. (I get frustrated with slow bridge games, basically.) Then I went to the UC and Trey picked me up for the big dinner thingy.
Oh, I forgot, in the meantime before Midway, I ran into
enigmaticfox and Don in the neutral territory between Wean and Doherty. They were with this guy Robert, but for me it was more like "Hi Sherri! Hi Don! Hi guy who I don't know the name of but have played Pump It Up with at Dave&Buster's several times!" Heh. So it turns out that the PIU guy is also a former CMU person, which is very cool.
Anyway, the big dinner thingy was like 25 of us at Mad Mex. Many many people were there. I think about half of them are on LJ. (Let's see if I can remember... Chris and George were there, Jo and Josh, Van, Neal and Kelly, Trey,
bn29,
fraterrisus, jcheney,
happysteve, Niki,
jacquez,
nlanza, tjs, tjs's girlfriend Jen,
blk,
mj2q,
plymouth, Regan, Rob and Jen, Axel,
bk2w, some Monty guy, and Bayani. I had a strawberry margarita the size of my head (I ordered it that way, as a matter of fact), and got very very drunk. About nine people took a picture of me showing that the margarita was, as a matter of fact, the size of my head. :) So that should end up on LJ soon enough. Oh, and I stole a glass from Mad Mex. But it SAYS "Stolen from Mad Mex" on it. I mean, they're just totally tempting fate there... I wouldn't have even though of stealing it if it didn't say that on it. Happy and Niki stole one too.
We were trying to tell embarrassing stories about Tim and Happy and people and stuff, but it was sort of hard to, as I couldn't think of many embarrassing things as opposed to just silly things. I did think it was really cool to be able to refer to a lot of the events of my happy undergrad years and have people know what I meant when I'd say things like "And then there was this time Tim and I put 'Turbolift' stickers on the Wean elevators," or "And once we proved that Happy had the biggest mouth in KGB by having him compete against
mistergone in a 'Ships and Boats' marshmallow-chugging competition..."
After dinner we went to Jensenville, where I got to play like two hands of bridge with Mark as my partner, and then played through a full game of Euchre, except it was like me vs. Tim and Jen, with random people as my partners as people got sick of it and stuff. A bit after that was over, we went home. Yay to Trey for the rides.
Tomorrow I have to remember to call Tim from the KGB party and get everyone to yell a hearty "FUCK YOU, TIM!" into the phone, as he will be at Kennywood and unable to make the party. Heh. In addition, I have to remember who offered me a ride to Ann and Don's party, and maybe even take them up on it.

no subject
1) the UC (Medieval Madness, 3-4 times a week)
2) the Beehive (about once every 5-6 months)
3) Dave and Buster's (and those games don't count)
4) Fuddrucker's (which isn't exactly a pinball hangout)
So in my mind, since I mostly play MM in the UC, the "best" pinball player in Pittsburgh is Mark Plesko, except since he left a few months ago, I guess I don't know who the best one is. I don't think I'm good enough at random pinball to enter competitions and the like.
