Day of Randomness!
Spent the morning and afternoon hooked on Koshien. I love the high school tournament, though I hate having such crappy TV reception. Joso Gakuin got knocked out in the very first game of the tournament, steamrollered by the Fukuoka team. Then in a battle of the south, Meiho from Oita managed to beat Konan from Okinawa -- the Konan pitcher was a strikeout machine but the Oita team had two decent pitchers, which always seems to be a good thing (wonder if they'll have the luck like Saga did a few years back). I missed the third game but it appears Saijo from Ehime edged out Yachiyo Higashi from Chiba.
I missed the third game because I went off to Ikebukuro to meet up with
nemesiscw, a friend of mine from Seattle, and his friend Tristan (I think), who are both in Japan for a few weeks touristing out. I was also meeting up with
catbus and her boyfriend, who have lived in Akita for a year or two respectively, and are on their way back to the US. The weird thing is that I know Ray and Phylicia both from the Seattle Bemani circles, and they of course know a lot of people in common, but didn't know each other. We met up at the Wendy's on Sunshine Road and hung out there for a while just talking.
So what did we do? We went to an arcade. Specifically, we went to St. Tropez, so I could show them the blocks game. But guess what happened? The Block People game was actually in use! And I realized after a little while that I ACTUALLY KNEW THE PEOPLE PLAYING IT, as it turned out to be
februaryfour and
pergamond. So I ended up playing with them for a bit and then later also made Ray and Phylicia play it with me. There was also UFO catching (I got mega-lucky on two machines and two times managed to put in one coin and get two things to come out -- I was telling E that "It's not that I'm good at these, it's just that I know which ones I'm good at and don't play the others"), and some Bishi Bashi Champ and whatnot.
We moved on to BSG after that, which is another larger, spacier, louder arcade with a huge Bemani area. I actually played a game of DDR with Phylicia, which was rare for me, and I also played a motorcycle racing game. P&S took off to meet up with other friends and so eventually the remaining 5 of us adjourned to a kaitensushi place on a side street, where we sat at a big table and ate a lot of sushi.
After that... Bic Camera and looking at phones and stuff (while E was getting her phone email set up). And then going home. I bought a battery phone charger... I figure I may very well need it on my long long train trip next week.
It doesn't sound like a particularly exciting day, but I mean, the entire point was just to hang out with people I hadn't seen in a long time and kind of randomly find stuff to do, and I managed to achieve that. It's kind of odd that basically I met with 3 pairs of people, all of whom I know one of the two through Bemani, none of whom knew each other. I haven't done that in a while.
Also, I got home and had an email from a guy in Hawaii that I'd sent some Tokyo Big 6 college baseball photos to, since they're playing some exhibition games in Hawaii this week... he actually got to meet my college baseball boyfriend Ohishi tonight and will hopefully get me an autograph tomorrow :) I have no real idea how to stalk college players here, nor would I want to freak them out as being a crazy white girl and all, so this works out well.
Another weird baseball thing -- during one of the Koshien games I flipped briefly to BS1 and saw the Yankees-Redsox game. And Junichi Tazawa was pitching. I swear it was exactly 11 months ago that I was watching him pitch in the industrial league tournament here in Japan, before all the shit broke loose about him, and now today he was on the mound at Yankee Stadium. WTF! He gave up a game-winning 2-run home run to Alex Rodriguez that I believe tied A-Rod with Harmon Killebrew on the all-time home run list, but either way, wacky wacky wacky.
