Consumed by consumerism

Last night I was so zonked that I started falling asleep in my chair while playing Puzzle Pirates. I seem to have found some new friends in-game who can spell and actually go do stuff during my active evening time. This is kind of good in that I have people to sail with; bad in that it encourages me to play a little more again. Though perhaps there really isn't anything bad per se in me playing since it is essentially free for me to play and it's a relatively low-key baseball-free way for me to zone out in the evening.

See, I realized that part of why I am spending so much more money now than I did when I worked for GEOS is that with GEOS there simply was no opportunity to spend money during the day usually -- I'd wake up at 10 or 11am, go to work, come home at 11pm or midnight, read news, go to sleep. The only thing I spent money on was lunch and dinner, which usually cost 500 yen or less each and came from bakeries and whatnot near the station. But now I actually have free evenings, so even though I generally don't have a lot of plans during the week aside from baseball, I tend to end up spending a lot more money on food or wandering or whatever.

Take last night -- where my only goal for the evening was to go to the Shinsei bank in Ikebukuro and pay my bills (including the first of my tax payments for last year -- sigh). So I did that... and having done that, I realized it was still early enough to get the 140-yen otoro special at my favorite kaitensushi place, so I went there and dropped 1100 yen on dinner (given, 8 plates of sushi for 1100 yen is still great but), and then I ended up playing a few games of Pop'n'Music, so that's another few hundred yen, and then I went to Mint to just look around at cards since a bunch of new sets came out recently, and whoa boy are some of them awesome, including the Dragons team set and the new Masaichi Kaneda tribute set. But after looking through Baystars and Dragons and Fighters figurines I ended up buying two more of those -- so 800 yen more. And a Rookies cellphone strap from a capsule machine for another 200 yen. And so in the end this all really does add up and I am much better off just sitting at home playing Puzzle Pirates or watching TV for 0 yen. Or if it's not raining I really should go bike riding.

BUT, and [profile] the2belo will appreciate this: the Dragons figurine set, there are 12 normal players (Masa, Asao, Araki, Ibata, Tatsunami, Morino, Wada, Lee, Hirata, Hidenori, Koike, and Doala) and one "secret" figurine. The Baystars one, they had enough boxes opened so you could pick your figure rather than buying blind, you could see that the "secret" one was Norihiro Komada circa 1996-7 or so when he was awesome and not just some big old fat guy. But the Dragons one, I looked through all of their figurines and could not figure out what the "secret" one was, so I asked, and the store guy is like "It's Tatsunami," and I'm like "But Tatsunami is in the regular set." and he said "No, it's Tatsunami as Rookie of the Year in 1988" and I'm like "Oh! That's freaking awesome, do you have any out?" and he said "no, we only came across a few of them and either kept or sold them."

(The boxes cost 400 yen for a figure and a card. They sell the cards for around 100-200 yen each if you pick your own and the figures, if it's someone unpopular they'll be 210 yen, but it goes to upwards of 800-900 yen for popular ones.)

I get home and open my figure boxes. I'm terrified the Fighters one is going to be Nioka again, but no, I got Sho Nakata, which while not a player I love, is not a player I would be ashamed to put the figurine on my desk at work or anything.

I open the Dragons one and... AND IT'S THE SPECIAL SECRET 1988 TATSUNAMI ROOKIE OF THE YEAR figurine. Holy shit!

Anyway, um, the moral of the story is that I am a dumbass.

Also, on Wednesday and Thursday this week at school we have exams and no classes, so Wednesday I get to leave early and go to my company to prepare visa renewal forms. Whee. I wish this was the week the Fighters were playing at Seibu instead of the Marines, so I could go to the game early or something. Oh well.
