saturday

i've got the weirdest sunburn since i wasn't careful putting on my sunscreen today -- so i'm burnt on PART of my left arm and most of my right arm, and part of my shoulders, and yes my cheeks but not most of the rest of my face... so weird.

I went to Jingu for the afternoon for the all-Japan college baseball tourney semifinals. Dragged Gen along with me since I've been trying to convince him to come to a game with me sometime. He also brought his dSLR and got there early and saved us seats in the front row by the dugout, so we spent most of the game clicking away taking photos. Whee! My friend who scouts for the Cubs was also at the game, and he came up to us during the first game to chat for a while, which was awesome since I haven't seen him in forever. Kazuhito Futagami is his pet player so we gossipped about him and some other Hosei dudes and about ALTing and whatnot.

Gen had to leave halfway through the second game but I stayed until the very end. Hosei won the first game and Fuji won the second. I have no clue who the hell will pitch tomorrow in the finals as both of their aces have been totally swamped this tournament.

After that I walked to Shibuya, stopping by Kua'Aina for dinner around 4:30, and then I took the train to Tamachi, where I went to play volleyball with Tokyo Gaijins. The net was almost so low it was women's height, and amazingly we had exactly 12 women and 12 men by the time the place filled up. The bad part was having to sit out pretty much every other game, but the good part was actually playing some women-only and men-only games -- in a women-only game I feel like a huge monster of a player, which is kind of fun in a way. The people were pretty nice at this place yet again, but it'd be so much better if we had two courts!

I chatted with a Japanese guy for a while who was saying how totally dead tired he was even though we'd only been there an hour, and I'm like "that's crazy," and he said "well, I'm really old" and i'm like "whatEVER", and I would have guessed him at being early 30's like me, but he's actually 40, almost 41. However, he thought I was a college student in my early 20's, so... go figure. (It was something like "You look young and you are obviously studying Japanese very hard, so you must be an exchange student.") I always think that it works such that I think Japanese people are much younger than they actually are, but could it also work that Japanese people think foreigners are younger than we are rather than older? That doesn't really make sense. Though sometimes given the way some of the staff at my school talk to me, I get the feeling they think I'm in my mid-20's as well, so... hmm.

Anyway, either way it was a very social Saturday and made me happy. Except the sunburn of course. I should wear something super-short-sleeved to school on Monday so everyone can make fun of my burnt arms... or maybe they'll feel sorry for me, who knows.

People always guess young for me, but I largely attribute that to my immaturity. That and context... I'm a university student, after all, and that skews it way young, so it's not a fair test.

But I'm completely terrible at guessing Japanese people's ages.
