Lost in Transportation?

Ok, so I didn't go to Kamagaya, I woke up with a kinda stuffy nose, and it's cold out, so instead I drank orange juice, ate noodles, and stayed home for the afternoon to watch the final game in the Koshien tournament, which was won by Seiho HS from Nagasaki prefecture, 1-0 over Hanamaki, the school with the hella hot manager who apparently is nowhere near as smart as he is cute, or has no concept of when guys should be stealing bases.

Then I spent an hour or two cleaning my room a bit and chatting on IM, after having done laundry and whatnot.

Tobin (Coziahr) finally got back to me on chat, and after some discussion I ended up meeting up with him and Kevin (Gaughen) and Range (Tobin's coworker), at Studio Alta... I told then 8:30 at 7:30, thinking it'd be like 40 minutes for them to get there; I got there EXACTLY at 8:30, then waited a while... they took the Yamanote instead of the Chuo/Sobu. Whoops. Whatever, I guess it was ok, my bad for not telling them how to optimize their route.

We got okonomiyaki at Osaka House because I like dragging people there. And it was fantastic as always and made me happy (since I pretty much only go there when I'm dragging people from out of town). I actually drank a beer because it was just easier to order four beers for everyone, too. And even though I was kinda worried that I'm too geeky to hang out with them, it turned out that no, they were well within my geek range, so it was ok. I'm still convinced I did meet Kevin sometime at CMU besides just on the graffiti boards, but honestly can't remember when, so maybe not. Eh.

Anyway, Tobin had this idea to go find the Park Hyatt hotel from the movie Lost In Translation (which I barely remember, I saw it once and didn't really like it). And well, I was originally going to duck out, but then I realized it was in a part of West Shinjuku I'd never been to, so what the heck. With the help of Tobin's map and my trusty cellphone GPS, we eventually found the Park Tower...

...and then it was like, the hotel is on the upper floors, and finding the actual entrance involves going around to the back and outside and all this other stuff, then taking one elevator up, and another elevator to the top top. And this place was SERIOUSLY nice. I'm not joking. I just looked at their site and spending one night in this hotel is pretty much the same price as my monthly rent in my house. No joke. Anyway, we wandered around the 41st floor, which was the "hotel ground floor", admired the spectacular view and the gorgeous interior of the hotel and a mock library and all this other totally extravagant stuff. Heck, even the BATHROOMS were spectacular!

Then we went up to the 52nd floor, all the way at the top -- which had an even more spectacular view -- except, we were greeted by a maitre'd sort who spoke perfect English, and informed us that um, we would have pay a cover charge of 2000 yen each to go into the bar, let alone whatever we ordered.

So, me being the poor English teacher, I kind of vetoed the idea. (And to be fair, I'm not sure anyone was that happy about the idea of spending $20 just to sit in the bar, even if it was the bar that Bill Murray hung out in during the movie.) We took some photos from up there, and then went back downstairs.

It was cold and the guys were pretty tired and still jetlagged, so we ended up getting a taxi back to Shinjuku station. Kevin sat in the front seat and was like "THIS IS SO FUCKING COOL, WE'RE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD!"

Came home. Tired. Tomorrow should be kinda exciting though, I'm going to go visit a junior high school in Arakawa that I should be starting work at on Tuesday, assuming everything goes well...
