Yokohama
Went down to Yokohama for the Fighters game today. I got there at 12:30pm for a 1pm game because I'm a lazy-ass foreigner. Sakamoto saved me a seat and even saw me come in and found me -- we were right next to the ouendan leaders! It really wasn't crowded anyway.
I went to get food and whatnot and ran into my friend Ikuko, who loves outfielder Tomochika Tsuboi and who was like "Deanna! Long time no see! I saw you on TV with your Tsuboi sign a few days ago!!" and that was funny. Also, she broke her leg a month or two ago so she has this huge cast on her right foot still -- it seems better, she can walk now, but it's still painful, she said.
Anyway, I didn't bring any of my crazy cheering crap for the most part, just sat there and cheered like a normal person. Brian Sweeney started for the Fighters, and ex-fighter Ryan Glynn started for Yokohama, so the ouendan leaders were like "We hated when Glynn gave up home runs as a Fighters pitcher so... GO GO ITOI HIT A HOME RUN OFF RYAN!!!!" which was funny, and sure enough the third batter of the game, Shinji Takahashi, DID hit a home run off Ryan Glynn. Go figure. Brian Sweeney pitched 7 scoreless innings though, which was super-happy, and Jason Botts pinch-hit for that useless good-for-kyojin Tomohiro Nioka in the 8th inning... and hit an ookina ookina home run! So the Fighters won 2-0.
When Tsuboi switched to play left field in the 5th inning, I saw Ikuko and her friend get up to yell "TSUBOI-SAAAAAAN". She was totally limping... and jumping and yelling. It was really funny, he waved at her and she almost fell over :)
The ouendan started using random old Fighters ouenka for some of the players who have no songs currently... so for Satoh we sung one that was used by Fujishima, and for Murata we actually used Toshihiro Freaking Noguchi's old theme. Then they used Tatsuro Hirose's for Yoh Chon-so and Shirai-coach's for Imanami. Sakamoto wrote down for me the lyrics for the ones we used for Satoh and Murata because he said we'll probably use those again, but we were both pretty sure the Hirose one was just being sung as a joke.
The cops came up to the ouendan leaders in the 8th inning and said, "If you guys win, you have exactly ten minutes after the game for your post-game celebration, okay?" and there was this big "wtf you're kidding" going on. but sure enough the Fighters won, and we basically tried to stretch out the postgame festivities as much as possible, doing cheers for all the players in the lineup, extra ones for Shinji and Botts for their homeruns, a "thanks and please play crappy against us next time too" (次を頼むぞ) for former Fighters Glynn and Yokoyama and Noguchi, and then the crazy dude who was really pissed off about the time limit was like "HEY! AMERICA IS REALLY FAR AWAY BUT LET'S CHEER FOR OUR FIGHTERS WHO ARE IN THE WBC!!!" so we did a ganbare Darvish and the Pitcher's Batting cheer song... and then we did an Inaba Jump. Twice, even! And then the guy was all ready to launch into an Ogasawara cheer or god knows what else, when the cops came by like "DUDE, WE TOLD YOU TEN MINUTES" and he's like "oh crap."
So we did one final "Let's win at Kamagaya tomorrow too" cheer and everyone went home :)
I ran into the college boys down in the front row and they were like "Hey, we saw the Yokohama cheer girls and wondered if you were over there with them," and I'm like "WTF?" and they said "they're called Deanna!" and I'm like "No! it's spelled different... d-i-a-n-a... but has same pronunciation..."
Good times, but the game was too short -- it was like 2.5 hours. I pretty much headed home right after the game (though I gave Sakamoto my other ticket to Jingu open-sen, so we're gonna hang out at the game on Wednesday, probably) so was on a train around 4ish, got back to Akabane a little after 5ish, bought some stuff at Yokado, and have been home since. I'm trying to catch up on writing back entries for Marinerds but kind of not doing such a great job so far :)
I'm going to a hockey game tomorrow though, in theory! I'm excited, though sad that it might be the Seibu Prince Rabbits last game ever, since the team is folding after this year.
