What a great day (Capture the Flag, etc)
For once I am LJ-cutting way before I start writing. Today was a GREAT day and I know damned well this entry could go on freaking forever if I let it. Plus, since enough of my LJ friends list saw me today, I'm sure you will all click on this to see your name mentioned. :)
Ok, my day started off with going to campus because I'd discussed playing TI today around 1:30 with
whitemage last night. So Carl and I both made it to campus by around 1pm. I got food at Subway, basically because it was REALLY COLD OUT. Getting indian food would have meant either a longer amount of time outside on the way to the lounge, or going to the lounge and then having to go outside again, and I didn't want to go outside. At Subway, I ran into Eugene. He was broke and I lent him ten bucks. There, now I will remember that. (Although I trust him to pay me back. I am weird about money. If someone in the lounge needs an amount that is fifty cents or less, I will pretty much just "lend" it to them, that is, give it to them. I've probably given away quite a bit of quarters and other stuff that way. Does it matter? Not really... it's sort of my way of getting food karma after having gleaned the benefits of freshman meal plans for the past several years. I don't like to lend or borrow too much money from people though, because for some reason despite my awesome memory for numbers, I always forget how much I owe or am owed.) Fuck, that was a long ramble.
Anyway, I walked to the lounge with Eugene, and then I found other people and we discussed games. The game of Twilight Imperium commenced around 2pm. It was me, Dave, Brian, Cap (
sleepsong's friend who is here from out of town),
jcreed, and Carl. It went about 4.5 hours, which isn't too bad. I actually got into an "almost-winning" position - I was in the next-to-last position, and at one point during that last turn, I did have 9 external planets and over 30 influence and 9 technologies and 30 resources. Mostly, I took a planet from Dave and I took a planet from Brian, and then Brian firebombed the shit out of me. So Brian and Jason were in position to win and Brian had the higher influence. However, Dave and Carl decided to trash one of Brian's technologies, so he didn't have enough of them to win. So Jason won. Shrug. I did at least learn that Brian's strategy of "buy tons of fighters" really does kind of have merit.
In the meantime,
sk4p and
ijikeru showed up. So now I have met Nikki. Yay! Because Shawn was going to a talk by one of his favorite authors, he left Nikki to hang out with us for a while. They already had dinner, but the rest of us were starved after gaming for several hours, so we went to the O in the UC and got food. Christina came along with us (after quite a bit of confusion because she had left wearing Jason's jacket, and we couldn't convince Jason to wear her coat), and umm, Dan B showed up at the last minute and came along too, and we were joined by the lovely and illustrious
puuj and
alibash as well. (Does Krispy really read LJ anymore?) We were also joined by Mike the Penn Hills HS student, who I was unaware of the identity of until now. That's pretty cool, he fits in really well in the lounge (and is there so often I had no idea he was a HS student!) Noble also came with us. He and I split a chicken fingers and fries order for dinner so we wouldn't eat too much O food. And then Noble had quarters eaten by the MM pinball machine. ("If I was going to kill Jason creatively, I would compress his body into the shape of a quarter and see if the Medieval Madness machine would accept it," he said at one point.) I tried to introduce Nikki to everyone, but it was sort of tough since it was such a large crowd and all.
After that we headed back to Wean, showing up about 15 minutes late for the rules of CTSWF.
Oh, I should explain at this point the outfit I was wearing today. Damn, I wish I'd gotten a picture. I actually intended to take pictures at CTF, but decided it wasn't worth carrying the camera, and stashed it and my wallet and keys and all in my locker in Doherty. So my outfit was: Four ponytails, Oasis-style, with colorful thingies around them. Khaki baggy safari pants. Black long-sleeve shirt. Short-sleeve Capture the B34r shirt. Then I also had brought a brown teddy bear, and grabbed a black plastic phaser gun from the CS lounge that I carried around with me all day. If you haven't seen the Capture the Bear shirt, it has Largo's character going on about "Capture the Beer" and Piro's female ponytailed Quake character holding a brown teddy bear and a black gun going "Hush." So some people saw the shirt and immediately got it and laughed, and others were like "Umm, why are you carrying a bear...?" One funny point was when I was in prison and they were like "Do you have any items we should take from you?" and I was like "Just my bear and my gun and YOU CAN'T HAVE EITHER OF THEM!"
Yeah, so I hung out with my friend Dave McWherter in the back of the room for most of the rules session since both of us have played a whole lot, and I chatted with him about Drexel people and dancing and crap. Eventually the teams split up. I was on the Red team, which was Doherty the first game. This time I got to be on
damion's team, which means I actually really didn't see much of him (for some reason I see much more of the other team, either from getting captured or from taking people to jail and seeing everyone in jail, I think. None of my friends named Dave were on my team, but I saw a lot of them in jails!). But, it was fun because when I saw him I didn't have to think "there's that sucky freshman" but more like "hey there's Ed! yay!" and all. Oh yeah, and who else on LJ was on my team... well
ijikeru was also on my team, although I saw more of her the second game.
buoren was on my team, and I was actually on a strike force with him initially, but then got separated. I did spend most of the first game going around with Noble, wearing the Belt of Chastity. We personally cleared like four floors in Wean or so.
jcreed was on my team, but
combinator and
whitemage were on the other team with a few other lounge-rats, which made things more interesting.
mistergone and a lot of the Cam people were on the other team as well. I hadn't seen Fred Z in a while though, so that was cool. And I had a funny moment when I ran into
teki (who was a roving referee) and Tom Strong in the basement of Doherty that round -- see, I had been on offense, and had snuck out of Wean back into Doherty and caught someone in the sub-basements where all the construction is going on. So I was like "Uh, hi. Can you tell me where my jail is? And for that matter, where the heck I am?" Anyway, it was funny, we actually won the first game. At the time, I remember I was in the neutral area between Wean and Doherty on the 4th/A-level floor, and heard cries of "game over!" and totally expected it to be like "yellow wins!" but no, it was "red wins!" so whee! Matt Lahut got their flag. Yay! They had found our flag, but hadn't brought it back yet, so we won. I think. Whew.
Ok, second game, we switched sides. Nobody on my team wanted to hide a flag, so I took the fake flag and hid it on the 7th floor, tucked partially behind a random poster on the wall.
ijikeru and Dan B and Matt G and I defended it. For a while, my routine pretty much was "catch someone, walk them down the stairs to the 3rd floor, put 'em in jail, take the elevator back to the 7th floor, see someone on the 7th floor, catch them, walk them down the stairs to the 3rd floor, put 'em in jail..." Repeat for about 30 minutes (no joke, I caught like 8 people that way, including
fleaplus, who I got to chat with on the four-floor descent to jail). Eventually they got our fake flag on that floor, so we regrouped. I ended up slightly on offense that turn - I'm not sure quite how it happened - I just was given a chastity belt and went into Doherty. I got through the entirety of the sub-basements and checked tons of the stairways and stuff. It was really funny because at one point their team had like 15 people in a group standing not ten feet away from me (I was tucked around a corridor) and none of them saw or heard me -- so I pretty much waited for them to go by and then ran out. It was really funny. Well, to me at least. The second game was eventually called a draw because of a lot of funny stuff happening on both sides. They had moved a glyph to protect their flag and it was unclear whether they were really allowed to do that. The other annoying thing was that a lot of the people were just "wandering" out of jail any way they felt like it to get back to Doherty... at one point I ran into two people who were just sauntering down the hall on the 4th floor and I was like "gotcha" and they were like "we have a free walkback to Doherty, we're broken from jail" and I was like "uhh, where the fuck do you think you're going? You are neither anywhere near jail nor heading on any direct path to Doherty." See, the jailor for our side, (whose name I do not know but I think she is
redglasses's girlfriend) wasn't really guarding jail all that carefully, and wasn't telling people which way to go back to their side, so they were wandering all over. (She had a broken toe, so that is why she was jailor, and wasn't particularly going to run after people. I don't blame her for that, I blame people for taking advantage of it, actually.) Anyway.. uh, I dunno.
sleepsong said I had a valid complaint, and it'd be settled in the next game or something. She also gave me a Krispy Kreme donut, which I wasn't supposed to tell anyone about, but since I really needed a blood sugar kick at that point, it was really good, and I guess it doesn't matter much now. I also stopped in to talk to Shawn and Nikki and others for a while at that point since I was getting sort of sad about how the game was going anyway -- things looked kind of bleak.
One of my favorite moments of the second game was, I was defending the 4th floor of Wean after the regrouping, and Sam Pinansky was trying to get in through the door at the top of the 46xx corridor (not the loading dock, the one that also has a stair that goes to 3). So I was like "errr, no..." and chased him out. Then I saw him coming in the loading dock and beat him there. Then I went back to the other door. Finally, we were both standing in the doorway. Remember, it was cold out. So I said, "Look, there's like 2 minutes to jail break, just let me tag you and you'll be a lot happier. You're just not going to get in here any other way..." After a bit he decided that yeah, it was cold out. So I tagged him and brought him in... just in time for him to miss a jail break. Heh.
So then we played a third game. At this point there were only like 14 people left on the yellow team and like 26 on the red team. So they tried to get a bunch of us to switch sides. Kirstin and me and Eva and Ben and two people whose names I don't know switched sides. I got to be on offense again! Which basically meant that like ten of us got together with a goomba belt and ran through Doherty. We had barely gotten back to Wean before we were told "Game over, Red won..." Geez. It was so sparse, I guess basically they picked a little more lucky than we did in where to go searching. Wasn't even one whole jail break long at that point... and we all decided to just give up for the evening.
Well, I didn't want to walk home through Oakland alone, so I convinced Dave M to walk me home. We hung out for a while with people outside Wean 8427 talking about all of this random stuff. Dave K and I were fencing with the Wands of Stun for a while, and most people left eventually. So after talking to Dave M for a while, he walked me home, which was good. We ran into this guy Mark on the bridge on Forbes, and he had just been at FNI, and actually, I didn't know his name before, but I'd seen him around Wean. Lots of people like that lately... anyway, it was good, and I got to talk to Dave for a while, which I don't usually get to do. It felt like I was an undergrad again... playing CTF, running around the place, goofing off a lot, and sitting up in Wean talking to someone about random crap until 1am and all. Sigh.
Anyway, what a great day! Now I just have to wake up early tomorrow and I am going to have another great day!

Re: (Does Krispy really read LJ anymore?)
it must mean he is done working on OS. :)
