what a beautiful Pi day

ok, now that I'm done with the rambling sad entry, I will write the happy bouncy today entry. (I kinda limited access on the rambling sad one. If you don't see it, consider yourself lucky.)

Today started at 9am. I got up. I went to campus. I met up with Carl. We visited Takahashi. I'm an idiot. We got Indian food for lunch after that. I played cards and then Settlers with Carl, Mlahut, and Christina Dinwoodie (see, and she didn't even get to answer the poll saying "mention me more!") Christina had a wreath of ethernet cable around her head, which she also wore at the Kiltie Band concert. Whee.

I decided to hang out on campus for the day because it was a good day. I played my recorder a lot in the lounge, mostly final fantasy music. Jennifer Lin came by at one point and was like "I want to go outside and play games! Come outside and play games!" so she and Noble and Martin and I went outside and played Settlers on the mall. It was nice out, just a little bit of wind and stuff. Oh yeah, for random shoutouts, I saw [profile] fleaplus as he wandered by on the mall. I also went and played some pinball. Sam Pinansky was there again. Medieval Madness pisses me off - the machine is tilted.

There were a ton of people outside because it was so nice out. I ran into Jacob and Kevin and Ann and shared WB gossip (which Jacob has since confirmed for me as true. Whee). I heard a lot of people talking about the pi numbers. One group was like "I didn't even realize our campus had a calculator club... they were the people who did the chalking..." another was like "What are all the numbers?" "Pi." "Huh?" "You know, like this number, you use it to find out how long a circle is..." It was really fun to see people I knew, smile and say "Happy Pi day!" cheerfully to them.

Nick and Drew and I went for dinner at ToI, for the AYCE special, at like 5:45. It was nice because I like Nick and Drew a lot and they're seniors who will leave in May and all, and I've known them longer than any of the other seniors I hang out with now. So it was a happy thing. The problem was, AYCE Indian food half an hour before you have to fit into a kilt is a REALLY BAD IDEA. Oh well.

I got kilted (adding my new Pikachu and Hello Kitty buttons to my jacket, but I can't find my "I *heart* my Baritone" button!) and came to the lounge as a walking advertisement for the concert. Then I played in the Kiltie concert. [profile] mrpeck showed up! Yay! It was good to see him there, and I think he enjoyed it, even if most of it is silly stuff he played in band a few years ago. I screwed up a bit in the concert, but overall the band pulled together a lot better than I thought we would given some recent rehearsals.

After the concert, I walked to the lounge with bpr, and there were people there gathering for a game of Twilight Imperium, so I got into that. Brian, Dave, Neal D. Martin, Carl, me, and Kevin were the players in the game. I was the merchant race this time. I did much better this time. Kevin and I allied together, which worked out pretty well. Unfortunately, we called the game around 2:30am, and I never did get to send my huge fleet of dreadnoughts out to kick Neal's butt. Officially Brian had the furthest progression when we called the game, but people said that I probly would have won if I'd played out things as I was already playing. Oh well. The good part is, the more people who play TI, the easier game setup and quicker game play will get.

I wish I could invent a recorder (the woodwind instrument, that is) that you could play and plug earphones into. I really like playing around with it, but I do worry about disturbing other people. It's like an idle thing, and I forget how loud it can get. I accidentally disturbed [personal profile] jcreed and [profile] combinator with it, and I'm glad they told me, so I knew to stop, but I guess I should have figured it out sooner. Bleh, that's the real problem with instruments - they don't have volume control per se. I guess in general I really don't want to annoy other people, but it's hard to figure out when I'm doing so. Blah.

I really wish I could remember why I think I have something to do tomorrow (err... today.. March 15). I know plenty of things for Saturday and Sunday, and next Friday is Capture the Stuff With Flags, but tomorrow... besides the Ides of March, damned if I can remember what's going on. I hate when that happens.

recorders

What size do you have? Soprano? The lower-pitched ones tend to be less intrusive if you're worried about the neighbors and whatnot. A tenor is fingered just like a soprano (except maybe the low C-C#-D-D#, depending on whether you have keys). Downside is the extra cost, of course -- and definitely try out a tenor before buying it to make sure your fingers have the reach.

Mmm. Tenor recorder is one of those instruments I vaguely wish I could play but cannot because I can't reach all the holes. Fortunately there's this "flute" instrument that seems to cover the same range...

Not to be anal or anything, but isn't it "capture the flag with stuff"?

Hey, I'll be done with finals and stuff by then, ideally. Maybe I can be in Pittsburgh for that....

It really depends on how you play. If you liked the original Capture the Flag (or as it was played in my elementary school, Capture the Playground Balls), and the Stuff is just icing, then it's CtFwS. However, if the Flags are just a minor detail (that ends the game. drat) and the real fun of the game is to have a blast with all the Stuff, then it's definitely a game of CtSwF.
