okay, the last day and a half, or two days, or whatever it is

Alright, so a short order of things is that I spent most of yesterday zoning in and out of consciousness, and now it is 9:30am Tuesday and I should head to work in about two hours.

First I wanted to add something to my Saturday night at Barbara's dancing story that I forgot -- just like a year ago when I got to geek out at ballroom, I reprised the "men are programmers, women are interpreters" joke about dancing. However, what happened this time was that right after saying it, and joking about how we might "crash" if there was a bug in the system, there was something sharp on the floor that a few of us shoesless folks stepped on while dancing by. Turned out to be a corn kernel. So I yelled "KERNEL PANIC!!!" and then we really DID crash. I feel good to be continuing that silliness.

I ended up staying up most of Saturday night... however I was packed around 5am so I decided to lay down for an hour. Which naturally turned into two hours and then SHIT IT WAS 7AM AND I WANTED TO BE AT THE AIRPORT BY 8 OMG, so I showered quickly, threw everything in the car, woke up B&K to say goodbye for a second, and then hauled ass to the airport. Fortunately they live a lot closer than most people I know in Pittsburgh and so I got there in about 15 minutes from the house, even having time to refuel the rental car before returning it. Reminder to self: will rent Enterprise again, they seem nice and competent.

Things were SLIGHTLY screwed up when I was getting my plane ticket -- the kiosk didn't work and a clerk had to help me and she kept helping other people and my flight was at 9:40am and here it is almost 8:30 and I'm going into panic mode at the desk there, but, eventually everything got straightened out. Security didn't take TOO long and thus I was even able to stop by Au Bon Pain for a sandwich for breakfast before getting on my plane.

SLEPT through the flight from Pittsburgh to Chicago. I completely do not remember any of it.

Had almost 2 hours in Chicago, so I wandered around a bit, shopped a little (among other things, I got the Randy Pausch book), got a bagel, and then sat down at the gate and called my dad to use up some of the remaining minutes on my phone (I just checked and I apparently have 20 minutes left, heh), and then I got on the plane.

THE PLANE WAS HALF-EMPTY! Or half-full. Whatever. The upshot is I had a window seat AND an empty seat next to me, which was nice, so I could stretch out. I slept through the first 4 hours of the flight for the most part (well, they served us food at some point and I ate it, I think it was roastbeef). Woke up about 4-5 hours in and watched the movie Enchanted again, and that was entertaining. Had some bad stomach cramps about halfway through too, but they went away after a while, thankfully. And then I spent the second half of the flight reading the Randy Pausch book, which I managed to finish. They gave us kitsune ramen as a snack about halfway through the flight, and then lasagna as lunch right before we landed.

Hey, something awesome in Narita: you know about those new immigration policies? fingerprinting and photos and all? Well, one COOL thing is, they had an EXTRA line for re-entrants -- that is, foreigners who have re-entry permits because they live here -- and it was EMPTY! So I didn't have to wait in the loooooong line with the foreigners or the long line with the Japanese people -- I just went straight through! That was COOL!

I managed to be on the Keisei train at 14:49. And I got back to Warabi around 4:20pm, and after riding my bike home with a ridiculous amount of stuff, I just sat down for a while on the floor thinking about what to do.

Went to the bank to get money before it closed, then went to Kura to eat super cheapo sushi because it seemed like the appropriate thing to do, then went to the Diamond City mall to use their bicycle air pumps (but I think I did it wrong), and then... I did laundry. Used the 1100-yen big washer/dryer even... and fell asleep around 8:30 while I was waiting to go back there. Oops.

Started watching SMAPxSMAP at 9pm and fell asleep again after like 40 minutes of it. I figured that if I fell asleep with the lights on and the TV on and all I might not stay asleep too long, but I was WRONG, as I woke up at 1am, having completely missed Ainori, which was the reason I wanted to stay up in the first place! Arrrrrgh! So I went back to sleep and woke up again now at 9am.

You might notice I never really did any unpacking... which is kind of what I need to do now before I head to work. Argh. Fortunately a lot of the stuff I brought back is kinda "disposable" things like medicine and soap and such, which really just needs to find some place to be until I use it up. Sadly, there isn't a lot of space here, so we'll see.

Also, yeah, now my apartment seems TINY again :(

I wonder what it'll be like going back to work. I'm really worried about all the huge reverse culture shock from being back here again... if nothing else, what REALLY hits me now is how much it kind of sucks to live alone.

kernel panic -> crash: awesome.

I guess as an airplane passenger "half empty" is the optimistic view.

Everyone was already giggling. Then I stepped on the kernel, and panic, and the whole house just came down in laughs.

Hehe. On my flight back to the US from Japan, we were served the kitsune ramen at midnight-ish, and the (Japanese) man sitting next to me gave me this look which was essentially "They're giving us instant ramen. How pathetic." in the manner of communal suffering (such as we share when the weather is awful out). I was quite amused at his distaste.

I wish they had one of those in Nagoya. :(

Weren't you living alone before? I mean, what with the week-long stretches of you and Zach never being awake and at home simultaneously? :)

We are very different people... I'd love to live alone. But that's aspie me.
