final day of carnival and america trip and so on

So today started off with me finally actually catching Kate awake and at home, though I had to leave fairly early to get to campus. I missed getting breakfast with Ben, since the KGB thing was at 11:30. Drove down, parked at Morewood, caught a buncha wandering KGB folks walking down 5th and walked with them.

(It was kind of funny to arrive and see Kevin Chen standing next to Kevin Shiue, but it was all a coincidence apparently, as I said "Morning Kevin, morning Kevin, morning Shawn.")

So, the event today was a catered lunch buffet at the Holiday Inn in Oakland. We were all sitting at big fancy tables, which was very odd for a KGB event of course. I was worried about where to sit, so I latched onto Tim, who managed to draw a table full of people around the same age as us, including Kathy and Ben Schmidt, who also now have a kid (this is a theme for the event, see). Eventually I wandered up front because I had volunteered to tell stories for [profile] alicelee's storytelling committee report.

The downside is, I suck at public speaking and telling stories. I shared the stories about the Wean Turbolifts from my freshman year, and about us painting the fence as Campus Police my junior year. I wish I had more, but a lot of them weren't worth it (though I still kinda want to propogate the 240 60 183 thing). I don't think I told them very well anyway. You know, it occurs to me that in my 2 years as 2nd VP, I never really was one of those "stand up front and tell stories" officers... I was always "WE HAVE EVENTS, COME TO THEM OR SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST" types. The crazy thing is, it seems that basically, us people who were in KGB in the late 90's are essentially the equivalent of the surly teenagers of the organization. We're not old enough to be part of or good friends with the really old folks from the 88-92 founding era... and we're not young enough to be part of the current generation. Even Goob was basically like "I know the old guys and the young guys... sorry to all of you in the middle."

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm complaining. It's just an odd sandwich effect.

There were plenty of good stories to go around, though, of course.

I did finally get a picture taken with The Other Deanna, aka [profile] namshubwriter's daughter. She is much cuter than I am.

I could talk about all the people I talked to, but it would make this entry explode. Overall I enjoyed the event. Mad props to Jay for organizing it.

I walked back to campus with a current grad student named Ross (I think, I wish I wasn't being a dumbass) and talked about puzzle hunts and stuff, since he went to MIT for undergrad. Fun stuff.

Went shopping at the CMU store before it closed at 4. Failed to find a shirt or jacket that I really really really wanted, so didn't buy any (though I tried on several). Saw the Randy Pausch book and didn't buy it. Might want to remedy that if it's at the airport, maybe, not sure.

Went to Schenley Park and the CS Lounge BBQ. Saw people and hung out and talked, basically. Hard to believe this is already the 12th BBQ... though I think the 1999 one is the first big one I really remember in Schenley, oddly enough. After all, this is my 14th Carnival. Yikes. Thanks go to [profile] allwein for making it happen, anyway.

When the BBQ ended, a bunch of us went to the UC, to the second floor, and despite Gaming Club going on, we took over a few tables to play other games. I ended up in a game of Power Grid with Rebecca, Benoit, Emilie, and Lahut (with Dan kibitzing and Tyson laptopping). I did ok, but I think I was confusing it with another game for a while and kinda flaking out. Matt won, of course. I wouldn't mind playing again sometime, but something tells me it'll be a loooong time away. I got to chat with jcreed a bit during it, and Fred Zeleny also came by and I totally didn't recognize him at first. People change, I guess. Oh yeah, and there was some Ricochet Robot going on too. I saw Duggan-sempai playing another game and went over to say hi to him at some point too, though I didn't know any of the other Gaming Club folks that were around.

Convinced Benoit and Emilie and Tyson to go to Del's with me, so I got to have some Deanna Rubin Memorial Eggplant Parmesan at long last. YAY. It was tasty and dinner was fun.

Afterwards we adjourned to [personal profile] blk's house, which we got the tour of and which is big. Bizarrely enough, we ended up having a spontaneous swing dancing floor erupt in her living room, with me and Bolson and Benoit and Sheena and some of Emilie and Barbara as well dancing around, which was FUN! I guess I did get to dance this trip after all even though it wasn't as planned of course. Talked to mpa for a bit too and then I had to duck out since it was like 11pm by then.

Except, of course, once I got out here, I ended up going to... Walmart. And I went into major "oh god this is the last time I'll be shopping in America before I head back overseas arrrrrrrrrrgh" mode. Alas.

Got back here at 1am? Talked to Bayani and Kate until after 3am? Now it is almost 4am...

But, see, my flight is at 9:40am. And I have to check my big bag. Which means I need to get to the airport at like 7:30-8am. (Plus I dunno on the internationalness of it since I connect in Chicago.) Which means I need to leave here definitely before 7-7:30. Which means waking up at like 6. So if I go to sleep I'll only get like one or two hours anyway. So... why sleep?

we'll see.

anyway, there's a chance I won't update again until I'm back in Japan. Whee.

Glad to read that you had such fun and met so many people who are clearly so dear to you. :-)

I wish you a safe and easy journey home!

Sorry I didn't really say goodbye properly. I thought I might not see you later on.

It was good seeing you. I wish we had had more time to socialize.

Saw Randy Pausch's book when I was at the Atlanta airport last week, so it'll likely be at the airport for you too maybe. I had already preordered it on Amazon though and actually finished reading it on the previous flight.
