I'm going to Sapporo for Golden Weekend!!!
Flying out Thursday May 1 in the afternoon and arriving back in Tokyo Sunday May 4 late in the evening. I went to the View Plaza in Akabane station this afternoon and booked my tickets. The travel agent didn't speak any English, but she was very nice.
One major wackiness, though, is that apparently when looking at travel tables... staying 1 night is considered a "two-day stay", 2 nights is a three-day stay, etc. So I had a major off-by-one error going on when looking at prices. 3 nights is actually a four-day stay. Whoops. However, it turns out that ANA had a bunch of deals that were better than JAL's and so the travel agent found me a decent one that ran around 50,000 yen for a package of round-trip flight plus three nights' stay in the Keio Plaza Sapporo Hotel, which is right by Sapporo's big train station. Apparently if I find the ANA desk in Chitose airport when I get there I can also get a bunch of coupons for food and such, but I'm not sure whether that'll make things too complex or not... she literally gave me like five papers and said "ok, take this paper to ____ and they'll give you _____... then take THIS one to..."
(It's still cheaper to go on the 1st and stay 3 nights than to go on the 2nd and stay 2 nights though. Seriously.)
I'll have basically two evenings and one afternoon to go sightseeing while I'm not at the Sapporo Dome watching baseball, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'll gladly take them, but my guess is that since most of my free time is in the evenings, I'll spend it looking for good food and interesting places to wander around, and not so much typical touristy things. I'll probably at least wander through Odori and Susukino at the very least.
I'm going to Hokkaido!!!!!!!!!
Ok... now I just need to figure out when I can visit Kyushu and Shikoku. One idea would be going to Fukuoka to see the Fighters play on May 18 but that might be too soon for me to make another journey. Eh, we'll see.
