The Headways of Catan
Here's another case of "It really requires a photo..."
This is my 9pm Headways class tonight:

I think that sums up my day right there.
Oh yeah, and I sort of won. We had to call the game at 10:45pm, and at the time I had 8 points and Haru had 7, but we were tied on roads so he could have taken Longest Road from me pretty easily. And if you're wondering, yeah, Duane stopped by to play Catan with us :) One of my students couldn't come to class tonight anyway, so it worked out okay.
Three funniest moments:
Me: "Hiroko has a LOT of rock, wow."
Hiroko: "Yeah! I am a rocker!"
Me: "My road is 7 long, Haru's is only 6. So there."
Haru: "Oh really? I will build more roads soon! You wait!"
Me: "That's great! You are learning a great English speaking skill right now -- trash talking!"
Duane: "I want to trade rock for sheep."
Hiroko: "Okay, I can trade."
[They pass sheep to each other, everyone laughs]
Duane: "That's not what I meant!"
Haru: "If you say you want to trade A for B, that means you want to give A and receive B. Right?"
Me: "Right. You're teaching my class from now on."
Great fun. I wish I could do this in all my classes. Haru said he's interested in learning how to play Ticket to Ride, actually, but I'm not sure how well that'd tie in with English lessons. At least in Catan there's a lot of communication and talking.
As for the rest of the day, it was pretty good I guess. I got to actually take an hour for lunch in the afternoon for a change. The sushi chef at Heiroku who I thought hates me actually talked to me for a while for once (about the seasonal specials, but still). I went to Daiso for some markers and stuff, and then to Book-Off. I won't admit what CD I was actually looking for, but I got something much more bizarre. And then there was work to do, lots of it. Classes actually passed pretty quickly, although my Passages gang were very concerned about my eating habits. (I tried another pair of omusubi for dinner -- umezukushi and mentaiko, and they weren't particularly great.)
What sucked, though, is that
the2belo also had to work super-late, so we didn't get to meet up. Grumble. I was really looking forward to having a beer with Jeff and trading Chunichi cards for an old laptop HD, and it seems that won't happen this trip, since he heads back to Nagoya tomorrow :( By the time he called me and got through, I figured that I could get a train down TO Kawasaki but there was no way in hell I'd be able to get home before last train. Of course, FIRST train would be at 4:30am. That's not so bad, really, especially since I'm always staying up until 3-4am anyway, right? I could just find an internet cafe...
But, I played a game of Pop'n, and got two An-Pan-Mans out of that stupid goddamn UFO catcher just before the Kawaguchi arcade closed, in only two tries, too. Woohoo. I stopped by Max Valu on my way home for grocery shopping, and among other things, I got more tea and some real honey. Man, I forgot how yummy honey tea could be. Drinking hot honey tea, watching Jun Mizutani kicking German butt at table tennis on TV, hiding under a kotatsu, futzing with my stupid laptop... I'm not sure this is how life's supposed to be, but it's not altogether that bad.

An idea:
You could do a modified version of Ticket to Ride (the USA edition), where each city has a history card (info from Wikipedia) that the player has to read when they reach that location. That way they can learn about the USA as they play, and practice their English.
