Ok, Macbook. Got it.
I don't really know what to say about today without really talking about work. It was GIEA counselling day. Exciting! Apparently by getting 6 signups (and 5 people to actually come) we were like second-highest in Higashi Kanto shisha. Go us. Word on the street is that we're getting a manager soon too, but I'll believe it when I see it. My gosh, next week will mark 6 months without a manager at our school. Crazy.
Oh, I can mention that I finally went to the omisubi (rice ball) place in the hotel plaza next to the station... I needed something quick for dinner and didn't want to get bakery or whatever. I really wanted rice. So I walk in and I'm staring at all the signs.. the women behind the counter were looking at me like they were unsure what the hell to do about this crazy gaijin, probably thinking I couldn't read/speak Japanese. In reality I just couldn't decide what I wanted to get, of course. So to solve their problem I just ordered two random things -- I think one was wafuu-tuna and the other was beni-salmon. They were pretty good, although I'm not sure how many of them I need to feel like I've really had dinner. Maybe three. It's definitely something to keep in mind in the future.
I have to remind myself that Knoppix is not a permanent solution and I really should go get a new computer. Although next week
the2belo is probably coming to Tokyo and he even has a spare laptop HD that he can lend me so maybe I will hold off until then and see if maybe it just is the HD and not the HD connector? Because if so, then I can continue to use this clunky old thing for a while, though I really do want to get a new computer, maybe around my birthday time. (I wonder if I still know anyone at Apple who gets discounts on Macbooks...) So I'm thinking I'll continue running this weird-ass solution until Jeff comes to town, maybe -- and this weekend I will totally go laptop shopping, but at least I won't feel pressured to BUY BUY BUY NOW NOW NOW. Which is good. I'm going to at least find an Apple store or two. Rumor is that they even have English-speaking staff there.
It turns out, anyway, that I can access the stuff on my USB portable drives just fine from here. Unsurprisingly this linuxy thing doesn't want to deal with AVI files, but it deals with mp3's just fine. See, I don't have a CD player here, just my laptop. And naturally the CD drive is sort of full what with running the OS. So this is the only way I can listen to music.
And pathetically, I am listening to Hikawa Kiyoshi. I know there's got to be some sort of "You know you've gone crazy when..." that links to "...you're voluntarily listening to enka music from a USB drive linked into a computer running a band-aid OS off the CD drive".

If you deigned pop your head over to zephyr, there would be three people offering you apple discounts. But, it would have to be shipped, I think.
