Bye-bicycle

During my 11-year-old's class today, we were drawing pictures for words on the phonics cards (as I thought that was more interesting than just plain "can you read this? it says 'cake'" and so on). So she picked the "bike" card and was kinda like "What's a bike?" and I said "Bicycle." And she said "Oh. Bicycle. BYE-BICYCLE."

It took me a second and I was like "Bye-bicycle?? OH YEAH! SHUUJI AND AKIRA!"

She said "Whoa." and looked at me like "How the bloody hell do you know about that?", but fortunately she doesn't know how to ask that in English, so she didn't say anything about it and just started drawing a bicycle. After all, technically I am too old to watch dramas with Kamenashi Kazuya in them, since I'm three weeks older than Ito Misaki. Or something like that. My story from now on is supposed to be that Katori Shingo is my favorite actor. Which is almost true, but not really.

And then an hour later I was trying to explain to my Passages students why I actually know who various vaguely obscure historic baseball players here are. Seriously, I thought my one student, who grew up watching the V9 Giants, was going to have a freaking heart attack when I said something like "The Giants were a LOT more unfair in the 70's... with Isao Shibata and Shigeru Takada hitting in front of Oh and Nagashima? You have to be KIDDING me". She gasped and was like "Uhhhh... uhh... you know Shibata? HOW? Young Japanese people today don't even remember who he is, but YOU know? How is that possible?"

As it is, Pau pointed out to me that young Japanese people probably don't even realize that Philadelphia isn't in New Jersey, so whatever.

Three other cool things about today:
1) realizing that it really does take only 15-20 minutes tops to get lunch at a restaurant around here usually (I got curry at Little Spoon. I sat down at 1:23pm and I was ordered, served, and done eating by 1:40pm)
2) there was SNOW! when I was waiting for the train home from Kawaguchi after going to the arcade to pop some music.
3) I sightread すれ違う2人 on Pop'n -- it used to be that IMPOSSIBLE song on the PNM5 machine at Illusionz, a level 27, the "bonus song remix" or whatever. Anyway, I put it on something like 4.5x speed and passed it on my first try. I still feel like I suck at pop'n but it's nice to feel a tiny itsy-bitsy improvement every now and then.

"'Uhhhh... uhh... you know Shibata? HOW? Young Japanese people today don't even remember who he is, but YOU know? How is that possible?'"

Wow, that's some pretty amazing logic.

Hmm, maybe I read too much incredulity into their reaction from the way you wrote it. After considering the statement, I can see why they'd be surprised, but I guess I also have the attitude that information is so freely available these days, I'm not surprised when anyone knows anything.

Hahah, ok, I see where you're coming from. I guess some of these students are just the kind of people who would annoy me with seemingly poor powers of deduction ^^;;
