Thanksgiving? Really?

I didn't write an entry here yesterday, but after work I met up with [profile] the2belo and we went to Yakiniku Erika, in Nippori, for dinner. I went there during the Japan Series too; it's the restaurant owned by the parents of Hichori Morimoto, the centerfielder for the Fighters, and it's FULL OF FIGHTERS STUFF and really awesome. Not only did we have yummy food but we also ended up watching a group of baseball geeks in the back playing a Strat-o-Matic type dice game. They were running games like Chunichi vs. Rakuten, in a weird combination of Beer League meets Dice League. Pretty awesome overall. I showed Hichori's parents the picture of my Halloween costume when I was Hichori. They thought it was pretty funny. Overall I made a big dork of myself all evening, but on the other hand I'm actually pretty proud of myself for speaking in Japanese for 95% of the time! Jeff wrote more about it and I wrote it up on my baseblog. It was really fun and crazy and another one of those "Holy shit, I live in Japan" sort of evenings.

Oh yeah, and yesterday afternoon I spent my lunchtime at Little Spoon eating katsu curry and reading through some travel brochures. I asked for January 5th off, so hopefully I can go on a trip somewhere with Oren and Carl since prices for transportation/hotel go WAY down on Jan 4th. I even saw deals like $250 for train plus 2 nights hotel in Kanazawa.

Today, I went to Heiroku for my normal Friday kaitensushi lunch, because Friday is a holiday and I won't be at work. After lunch I finally got up the guts to go to the fire station and ask them if I could have a Kataoka Ayumi smoke alarm poster. They seemed REALLY amused when I explained that I love baseball and I respect Ayumi a lot, and gave me TWO posters! Whee! For those who don't know, Kataoka Ayumi is a female professional baseball player in Japan. She plays for Kin-chan's club team, the Ibaraki Golden Golds. They're in the industrial/club league of Japan, so not quite the NPB, but they're really popular.

The rest of today was pretty frantic and busy and I forgot to eat and was STARVING when I got home. Also, I was FROZEN because it is FUCKING COLD right now. I rode my bike to Jonathan's diner and got omurice and salad for dinner. The omurice was surprisingly unsatisfying, so I'm probably not going to get that one again.

Technically, tomorrow (Friday) is "Kansha no hi", or "day of Thanks", so I suppose that's sort of like Thanksgiving, and right now it's Thursday in America so it's Thanksgiving, but either way I can't really see family or eat turkey or any of that stuff, so eh. I could go to KFC and eat poultry and other related foods, maybe... yeah. Actually, I'm hoping to spend Friday in Yokohama, and thus I really ought to get to sleep so I can wake up tomorrow.

More specifically it's 敬老感謝の日 (Keiro-kansha-no-hi), or Respect for the Aged Day. So it's Thanksgiving for Grandma and Grandpa.

Or maybe it's 勤労感謝の日(Kinro-kansha-no-hi), or Labor Thanksgiving Day. And maybe I'm an idiot.

Well, happy thanksgiving no matter whether there's a feast based around a big dead bird.

Redundantly, but someone probably should say it: "Golden Golds" is a weird name. :-)
