Dude!

Today was pretty good.

[profile] the2belo told me he was going to be in Tokyo on an overnight business trip today, staying in Kawasaki, so I told him we should totally meet up after work, somewhere along the Keihin-Tohoku line. Despite that we'd only have an hour or two to hang out, he actually came all the way up to freaking Akabane and met me at GEOS, and we rode down to Akihabara (the halfway point between Warabi and Kawasaki) and tried to find a place to get dinner, which is nigh impossible there at 11pmish. Infact, it's actually somewhat cool and yet completely frustrating to see Akiba's main drag completely dark and shut down. So, we ended up at The Hub, which is this, as I've been calling it, "Engrish Pub" chain around Tokyo. I hadn't been into one yet.

We got fish'n'chips and beer, and they were pretty good. I had the "Hub Ale", whatever the hell that means. It was drinkable, and I hate beer, so that's saying something. Jeff got a Guinness. We talked about baseball and soccer and Japan and all kinds of random crap. It was almost like being back in Seattle and getting fish'n'chips and beer with a random buddy after work, except that nobody in the pub spoke English except us. Well, and we were in Akihabara. But other than that.

Anyway, I felt like a big dumbass for trying to go get late-night food in Akihabara. If/when Jeff comes back next week or whenever we're totally going to Nippori for some yakiniku, I think.

I got one of the last trains back out of the city, and arrived home around 1:15am. That's not too bad, honestly.

As for the rest of the day, it could be summed up in saying that Uniqlo is cool (4 shirts for 4000 yen, yay), Mos Burger is cool (I found a cozy little one near the south end of Akabane station), and NOVA's implosion has had... interesting effects on us, mostly a big increase in visitors. I'm a little worried about tomorrow though, Eri's going to be in training all day and Duane won't be around so it'll be just me holding down the fort. Scary!

The long-anticipated announcement that the A's will open the 2008 season in Japan came this morning.

The A's and Red Sox will play their first two regular-season games in the Tokyo Dome on March 25 and 26. The teams will also play exhibitions March 22 and 23 against two Japanese pro teams.

A's president Mike Crowley said the A's are "excited and honored" to open in Japan and added, "Baseball is truly a game without borders, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of the game's growth on the international level."

The A's will be the "home" team in Japan. They'll return to the Bay Area for exhibitions against the Giants (March 28 at China Basin, March 29 at the Coliseum). Oakland will resume regular-season play April 1, hosting the Red Sox in a Tuesday-Wednesday series and finishing the homestand with a weekend set against the Indians.
