Well, I'm still alive

And judging from the comments on the last entry, people will be glad to know that...

I went to Nagoya today after all, since I already had the train tickets. Turns out Jeff didn't actually have the baseball tickets and the game sold out and we ended up buying from scalpers, but whatever, I think it was actually therapeutic for me to go to a baseball game and be able to talk to someone in English all day. Also, the Dragons won, so that was nice, and I got my Morino jersey, and afterwards we devoured some miso katsu and tebasaki and all.

Unfortunately my train home got stuck for a while due to rain, and my legs cramped up a lot so it was hard to sleep for very long. The truck driver guy actually called me while I was on the train and I couldn't really hear him but he said something about his company contacting me, and he wanted to know what hospital I was at (and I had to explain that no, I wasn't at a hospital, since I had no fractures and am able to walk and all). When I got home tonight there was a package on my door for me, a big box of what I think is cakes/cookies from a bakery, with a business card left from the truck company.

I swear to god, I took in the box and just sat on my floor and cried for about 3 minutes. All I could think was how I don't want to eat sweets because I am all gimpy and can't ride my bike anymore and won't get any exercise and I don't want to gain back the weight I've lost since moving to Japan, so here's this obligatory-Japanese-gesture thing they did to try to be nice like "hey, sorry we almost killed you yesterday" and I'm just like "WAAAAAAH".

From what Sam explained to me, it seems that the truck company will pay for my medical expenses and stuff, though I think there's a whole bunch of things that need to be done for it. Also as it turns out there is indeed a bruise on my chest (it's kind of embarassing, though) and my upper right arm also has some sort of muscle bruise, so I might need to get them checked out.

I decided not to go to Chiba tomorrow for the Fighters game, which makes me horribly sad, especially with today's announcements that Yukio's retiring and Hillman-kantoku is quitting :( I should be able to watch the game at home in theory, over the internet, but it sucks, I was so psyched originally when I heard they were playing a make-up game tomorrow. But that was back before I became a gimp, so.

**hugs** It's amazing how gestures-attempting-to-be-nice can be exactly the wrong thing when you're in a bad way. I really hope things get settled for you quickly. You're handling all this so well.

Probably best--stay off the leg and you can get a bike and back to biking sooner, no?
And, I suspect that your job is an infinite sink for baked goods.

I'm throwing your 交通安全お守り in the next box. You should attach it to your bicycle. :-/

Great point...your students will gladly take the cookies, if your coworkers don't.

As for getting the gift itself...I don't know whether I'd feel like they cared, or if I'd feel insulted to get such a gift. Either is probably understandable. I'd probably be wondering if they were just trying to avoid a big lawsuit.

[identity profile] dvarin.livejournal.com 2007-09-09 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think both being insulted and thinking that they cared would be a bit mistaken. It's surely some cross between proper/polite behavior and a get-well-soon gift. Especially since they're also paying the medical bills, it's not like they're trying to skip out by giving something cheap and showy and useless, it's just a physical apology.

But perhaps I'm just not sufficiently lawsuit-oriented to be a proper American.

[identity profile] tg2k.livejournal.com 2007-09-09 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I didn't say she needed to sue, either. I don't know whether or not I would...it would depend on the circumstances. When I got rear-ended coming home with a load of food from Costco, and my son was only three days old, the driver left without waiting for the cop to show up. Had we suffered anything more than inconvenience (there was $3000 of car damage even though it didn't look it), I would have been glad to sue (the guy was more concerned about getting out of there than with passenger safety, WTF?). On the other hand, when I got rear-ended by a car that slipped on ice (the same ice my car slipped on before theirs), I totally sympathized and a lawsuit was the last thing from my mind.

It is sad that being American is associated with frivolous lawsuits, though.

I'm so sorry you got hit by a truck!!!

N> pic of you with the Morino jersey. XD

P.S. Nakata is damn near unbeatable at home. He lost to SoftBank at home back in interleague, which broke a year-long streak. (And he's almost the exact opposite on the road.)

I'm glad you are alive.
And also that you got an english speaking boost!

*hugs* Get better soon :)

I was trying to respond...

but I had a very spotty internet pickup from a lone wireless source down the shore.

Dude,, are you okay? You are posting so you must be improving.
The bike is small price to pay for you not becoming seriously maimed, injured or killed in a strange country. I'm glad you're all right.. all things considered. You keep moving farther an farther away I can't help you but wish you luck on getting better and acquiring a new bike. Anything I could do for you, shout.

Glad I could be of some help, even if it was only miso-katsu :)

I'd totally agree with the suggestion to bring that gift into class! You can always 're-gift' - save it for your new neighbor when they move in; take it to some boss you want to earn a few points with; take it to your biggest/most difficult class and let the students eat it; etc.

Sympathy re missing the game and, well, everything.

It may feel like bad luck and all kind of badness, but you're so lucky it wasn't any worse. You won't be gimpy for long.
