Mashiko, for Carl's birthday
Zach and Oren and Carl and I went to Mashiko for omakase dinner tonight (for the actual celebration of Carl's birthday and the 7th). I officially cannot spend any more money on food for the next month. No, just kidding.
Courses:
1. Kanpachi sashimi with yuzu sauce
2. Tuna poke (with seaweed salad)
3. Nigiri Sushi - bluefin tuna, black cod, sockeye salmon
4. (raw?) Scallops with wasabi sauce
5. Uni on a tempura fried shiso leaf
6. Fried shrimp and softshell crabs (whole)
7. Box sushi with mackerel on top, bonito in the middle
8. Fried mahi mahi with nanban sauce
9. Chiai
10. Maki sushi
10a) unagi, shrimp tempura, avocado, in rice shell
10b) tempura onion inside, salmon on top
10c) tempura asparagus inside, hamachi on top with spicy sauce
11. Dessert - green tea tiramisu and mango cheesecake
The best parts were the 10a rolls, the tuna poke, and the fried mahi mahi, IMO. All of the sushi was great too. I couldn't eat the fried shrimp because they were all whole, with legs and eyes and everything. Chiai is pretty damn good too (that's bloodline tuna, it looks like sesame beef but is just very meaty fish). Uni is gross, though the tempura-fried shiso leaf was neat. Scallops were sort of eh. As usual, it was a mix of yummy things we'd never think to order for ourselves, and scary things we'd also never think to order for ourselves. I've got to get those unagi-shrimp-avocado rolls again someday though. They were just fantastic.
Oren and Carl drank like two flasks of sake, and Zach went through several glasses of plum wine and sake. Me, I was the designated driver. I do that.
We played Tichu while sort of watching the Mariners on TV. I made them win! Yay.
