Update on the last few days

Wow, I really haven't updated since Tuesday morning and it's now Friday morning. Umm.

Well, Tuesday night I skipped going to the Twins game in order to stay later at work and finish things up, and then also to do last-minute trip shopping and to do laundry (since the bathroom remodelling had the water off in the house most of the weekend). Not particularly exciting.

Wednesday I spent the work day trying to hand off my work stuff to Jack so he could run it over the weekend, and then I came home, finished packing, and went to dinner at Chinook's with Carl, and he gave me a ride to the airport, and I hopped on a plane. Did you know that apparently if you have any liquids in your carry-ons, including like, shampoo and such, it has to be limited to 3-oz bottles and you have to put them in a clear ziploc bag when going through the X-ray thingy?

My flights sucked for various reasons. The SEA->IAD leg, I had a middle seat and the guy on my left was snoring up a storm and the girl on my right was wearing ridiculous perfume and so I could barely breathe or anything and ended up spending most of the trip listening to music and reading a book, finally sleeping for maybe the final hour, hour and a half of it. The flight got to DC about 40 minutes late.

I looked frantically for my connecting flight gate, thinking I'd only have 25 mins to get to it -- EXCEPT that it had been CANCELLED. Fuck. So I found a United person and told them what happened and they went and scheduled me on a USAir flight. So that went mostly well and I slept for that entire hour-long flight on the prop plane pretty much.

On two hours of sleep, I rented a car in the airport -- apparently Dan Marino was ahead of me in the car rental line, though I didn't recognize him -- and then I drove to campus and parked in the visitor's garage. I got out of my car and Jim Roberts (my freshman advisor in SCS, who now just teaches) was walking by, having also just parked. So I walked to Wean with him, and he pointed out all the new additions to campus as we went, mostly new statues and the "Big Dig" where they've hollowed out the area between purnell, wean, NSH, etc to build the new SCS building. Whee.

Once in Wean I ran into various people I knew. It turns out Mark Stehlik is in India until Monday, which is dumb since it's Carnival, but oh well. Eventually I ran into Trey, who suggested we go get lunch from the carts. So we did. Then we came back to the NSH Atrium to eat, where we were joined by rjmccall and dkitch, and Cat and Kirstin. Eventually Trey went to do work and I walked to Midway with the aforementioned group, where we went to see the Carnival opening ceremonies and the Kiltie Band concert.

I sat with Mark and Christina for the concert. The band sounded pretty good I guess -- they played the Holst suite in E flat again. Jeremy-the-music-major played the saxophone solos I remember Chris Smoak playing a few years back (on both the Holst and on the Amazing Grace song earlier) and he sounded pretty awesome. Dan Fernandez and Bob Rost are still playing with the band, which is pretty crazy. They also played the John Williams suite and a percussion girl did the Suzie scream this time. Funny, since Kiltie always loops music every four years or so, you start thinking about pieces in comparison to whoever played it when you were in band. No, I don't know the kid who had the B flat clarinet.

After the concert I wandered over to the Alumni House band reception, where I talked to Larry and Tal and Marybeth and Suzie and Brett and some other people, and eventually gave up and left. At that point I took some pictures of campus and noticed the AWFUL DIRT SPOT showing up and totally panicked about it. Sigh. I found some old lounge-rats in the UC second-floor playing Mao, and then went to Wean and found Benoit, who was too busy to hang out, so I worked on a puzzle that mpa has in that office, and then... I guess I wandered around for a bit. I called jcreed, but he was busy with his band at the time.

So I went to Squill and got some cough medicine at Geagle, and then jcreed called me back, and we ended up going to Del's with Martin. And that was pretty awesome, because I got to have my eggplant AND because I got to catch up with Jason and Martin, and they are awesome.

After that I managed to drive to Mark's house without getting lost, but I was totally zonked out by the time I got here, probably due to being on 2 hours of sleep and partially due to still being sort of sick, sigh. So Mark and Christina were here hanging out and watching TV or whatever, but rather than being social I just came upstairs with my stuff (I'm in Roman's old room here in the attic, whee) and checked email and I seriously fell asleep on my laptop at like 10:30pm.

Mostly woke up around 9am today and typed out this entry and actually answered some other emails and whatnot. Now I really should shower and try to get to Mobot by noon, maybe stopping in squill on the way to try to get a camera cleaner. Sigh.

Don't stress too much about cleaning your sensor, if that's where the dirt spot is, just get one of those cheap blowy-bulbs with the brush on the end. You probably know you're not supposed to use compressed air, although I have, just not right up next to the sensor. And you DON"T want to do what I did the last time I had to clean my sensor on vacation, which is to make little puffs of air with your mouth, because I SPIT on my sensor accidentally. So embarrassing. Then I smeared the spit around when I tried to clean it up with the brush I had. It ended up not affecting my pictures that much though, and I had it wet-cleaned when I got home. Live and learn.
