Chapter 925. In which our heroine falls in love with a Canadian pitcher.

John M. Ford died over the weekend, which is pretty sad. He's the author of the only old-show Star Trek book I ever didn't hate, "How Much For Just The Planet?", among other things. It's weird being as I was at a wedding full of sci-fi book references, too.

Today, I made it to work in time for our morning meeting for once, and then was sleepy for the rest of the day. The condo they're building across the street from IDX/GE has many more floors than it did before I went to Japan.

I met up with [profile] gomezticator at Safeco Field for our last opportunity to buy cheap seats this year. I'd been joking around the blogosphere that I was going to end the curse and the A's were going to lose tonight. It was a joke, especially since I wanted Esteban Loaiza to get the win, because he's on my fantasy baseball team, but alas, the normally-invincible and drop-dead gorgeous Huston Street blew the save, giving up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th, and then of all people, Willie Bloomquist drove in the winning run in the 10th.

I ran into [profile] jeffford and [profile] jonobie on the way into the stadium, too, which was neat. I blame their UT karma for Huston's implosion.

When we first got to the game, I saw some A's guy signing stuff down by the field and chatting. I thought it was Kirk Saarloos from afar, since he lives near Seattle and usually comes out to chat with people during BP. I've gotten Kirk to sign stuff before so I figured I'd skip it, but then decided on a whim to go down anyway and maybe get a picture. Well, I get down within about four rows of the front and it's not Kirk Saarloos, but it's RICH FREAKING HARDEN! Oh man. So I got him to sign my ticket stub and told him I was going to come see him pitch tomorrow and he smiled a huge smile at me, and now I suddenly understand why all the AN chicks adore him -- he really is the cutest thing on the entire planet, even moreso than Swisher.

Tomorrow, I get to go to the game with [profile] damienroc before he moves away... if anyone wants to go to a game with me before the season ends, your best bet is Saturday, in theory, though I was hoping to sit reasonably close up to see Kevin Millwood pitch. Hmm.

Also, Rakuten drafted Masahiro Tanaka instead of the Fighters, Satoru Kanemura got himself suspended for the rest of the season and the playoffs, and I think I'm going to cry (and go write in the appropriate blog for this stuff).

Whoa, I didn't know he'd died. And as a matter of fact, I have that book. I have a whole slew of TOS-based novels like that.

Also, DRAGONS DONOUE DYNASTY!!!!!!!!!!1111one.

Yeah, you have it right. His father is Indian. He's being touted as "Darvish II".

And speaking of the Dragons, they're only three games ahead of Hanshin going into the weekend where they play three head-to-head at Koshien. I'm fairly alarmed here.

Well I've seen it on one place on the net where it was "Darth Tasuku Romash". But oh well.. if he turns into a star everyone's going to call him "Vader", anyhow. I FIND YOUR LACK OF CONTROL DISTURBING.

Yay, go Dragons. I got a Dragons hat just before I left. :)

Huston Street

That is in fact the worst game I've ever seen him pitch, although it was the first time I watched him not throwing to college batters. After the comeback my Dad said it was the most exciting baseball game he'd ever seen. On the other hand, my Mom wondered why we couldn't leave after nine innings.

Deliberately mismatched!

<unnecessarily-pedantic>I make it Chapter 2,402.</pedantry>

Cool that you got to meet [livejournal.com profile] jeffford! I met him under completely different circumstances once. (Well, three times, I think.)

Wait, you've fallen in love with a Canadian with *blue* eyes? I didn't know that was possible :)

We were keeping the best for last. It's a national conspiracy.

jeff was horrified when he heard me cheering for Street, but I couldn't help it with him being from UT and all! (Cool college baseball moment -- he was playing 3rd base, and the manager and catcher came out to chat on the mound, and he started tossing the baseball around. Except that the motion he was using was a pitchers motion. Very funny to watch.) Anyhow, its clear my cheering helped Seattle more than Street. :)

I am still in disbelief that those last two innings happened. That was an unreal finish.
