The Mask is a pretty dumb movie
I played volleyball this afternoon. I stretched beforehand, didn't serve overhand at all and barely spiked. I only played for an hour and a half, and stretched more afterwards, and soaked in the sauna for a while. I don't *feel* like I've screwed up the arm any more, but we'll see when I wake up tomorrow, I guess.
Actually, what was funny is that to compensate for not really swinging back my arm, I spiked with my fist mostly, but I got a lot of really good hits. So Terry was like "Damn, you're hitting really well this week, what did you do?" and I said "I blew out my shoulder."
After volleyball I went down to
oren's house, and
zml had just gotten to town; he's in town for this week. So, we all went to Taste of India for dinner, where we had amazingly quick and efficient service, and then just spent the rest of the evening over at Oren's goofing off. We watched The Mask on TV, kind of... all three of us were using our respective computers (Oren's desktop, Zach's laptop, my Sidekick) to do other things at the time, but I'd never actually seen the whole movie before, so now I have. To be honest, dumb as it sounds, hanging out with some friends and just goofing off on computers and talking is really just a fine way to spend a Sunday evening, IMO - it beats goofing off on a computer at home alone, that's for sure.
Speaking of which, my new computer should show up on Monday or Tuesday. Wheeeeee.

If you get better contact out of a fist than an open hand, you need to stiffen your hand before it contacts the ball. If you tense up your hand, you won't lose the energy on the hit that you would with a loose hand.
overhand serving--Try to use more of a horizontal motion rather than a shoulder rotation. To help with this, pull your serving shoulder far back before initiating the serve--increase the distance between the ball and your serving hand. Most people pull their arm back during the toss, but it is more effective to start with your arm/shoulder back and only moving it only forward during the actual serve.
Shifting your body from facing nearly sideways to facing forwards will help move your shoulder in the right motion without needing to rotate it much.
yay volleyball!
