Great Big Sea @ The Moore Theater
I think the quote of the evening was probably when Alan was introducing a song and said how "We're just doing this for the cash. That's where the money's at -- sea shanties!"
Oddly, all night they kept making references to how glad they were to be alive, and how they were happy to have a day or two where they weren't almost getting themselves killed, although Sean and Alan apparently took a ride in a sea plane nonetheless. I didn't realize what they were talking about was serious until I went to the site after the concert and read the road diary which tells a story about how their tour bus got in a big accident. Ouch.
I realized that the last time I'd seen Murray Foster on a stage, as far as I can recall, was in Chicago in February 2000, with Moxy Fruvous. That's a loooong time ago, I hadn't even realized it. He fits in really well with Great Big Sea, though, I think.
They made a whole lot of Seattle jokes, mostly involving coffee and picking on Alan for being too hyper. "Dude, you could have WALKED here from Victoria." "Tim Horton's is only a gateway drug." As an aside, though, there were a surprising number of people waving Newfoundland flags, and several people draped them off the balcony.
Speaking of balconies, the Moore really sucks to see a concert like GBS. It's all seats and when people did get up to jump up and down and dance, the balcony shook a lot. It was sort of scary. Actually, in general I just sort of think the Moore sucks; though I did enjoy seeing Stomp there, and Dreams Come True when they were in concert here. I guess it all depends on the show. I think GBS would have been better at the Show Box, though I don't know the difference in capacity.

Oh, yeah, so that was a cool thing -- there was no opening act. At 8pm, GBS just came out on stage and started playing. They had a 20-minute break around 9:10, then played until it was almost 11pm. On the other hand, this vaguely sucked for me because I went to the concert alone, meaning I had even more time just sitting there by myself websurfing on my Sidekick. I was sitting in the upper balcony, and pretty much everybody sitting around me was couples in their 40's, I swear. It was actually a little bit weird. On the other hand, I had an aisle seat, which was good, because the balcony seats have absolutely no leg room whatsoever.
Also, it was really pretty cool when for the second encore they came out, and shushed the audience, and despite everyone's ears ringing, sang Old Brown's Daughter with no mics, no nothing, just the solos and harmony. I guess that would be a credit to both the theater acoustics and to their singing ability that it sounded so good.
What wasn't as cool was that they didn't sing Boston and St. John -- I really sort of wanted to hear it live. Oh well.

There was no B&SJ at my show either -- looks like about 80% set overlap, but it's hard for me to tell because I don't know all the songs yet.
The plus-side was the venue, which was about TLA-sized, with an open floor up front and tables in the back, so I was about 15 feet from the stage.

Man, that's good about the venue. That sounds like a lot more fun.
