Ambivalencia
I did laundry tonight. It was very, very exciting! I interspersed in some videogames, too.
I wonder if I should be worrying that I'm becoming like my dad, only without the TV.
Also, I'm starting to seriously lay out travel ideas for the year. Where else do I need to go besides Japan, Philly, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Boston, Austin, and the Bay Area?

There's a direct flight from Newark that taks 6-8 hours. So from the East Coast it's not really much further than cross-USA. But of course you'd have to do both. So yeah, in a weekend you could only fly here, hang out for about a day, and fly back.
If you know what you want to do in England (and have the vacation time), I would take a week, fly out on the Friday, hang out here for the weekend, and visit elsewhere in England the rest of the time. If you get a 4-day rail pass (have to get this in the US beforehand), you could go to London for two-three days, and visit a couple of additional cities or areas. on the way back.
June and July have the best weather, August is rainier in Edinburgh but is when the festival is (but it's much less clear what I'll be doing then). Weather elsewhere in Britain varies widely.
Also, if you do visit, remember that Britain (the island) is the *disjoint* union of Scotland and England (the countries).

Oddly my best excuse to go to Britain at all may be if I get invited to my friends Chris and Megan's wedding next winter -- but I bet it's pretty cold then!
Yeah, I would like to wander around London someday. And see castles, lots of castles. I have no idea what else I would do over there, honestly, except maybe visit people. Are you only there until the summer, then?

Don't know yet; if I get a reasonable job next year, I would probably need to start in July or August (and would probably want to get back in plenty of time to find a place to live & get settled), but might be able to negociate a later start.

At any rate - don't go for a weekend, its totally not worth it. i think crossing the atlantic requires at least a week of time, preferably more.
FWIW, my understanding of London weather is that its similar to Seattle - so, um, not nice in the winter, but not undoable. I do not know how 'bad' things would get as you went north. Frankly, though, i've never found the weather to be a hindrance while traveling, just the non-peak hours kept by some of the things we wished to see.

You can see the weather for where I am for the next ten days, if you like.

That weather looks surprisingly similar to Seattle.

We're looking at Japan for summer 2007.

I was going to bring this up at work at some point as soon as I figured out when I thought I was going, so I could clear time off for Japan (the others are all weekend trips pretty much).
(yeah, I'm getting on a bus and coming to work as soon as my hair dries a little more!)

I could maybe fit Minneapolis/St.Paul in again. I wonder if I have any other friends who are getting married at a Twins game. Or I could come out for the hell of it.

Or Catalina.

The Yankees are in Anaheim that weekend, so it's not entirely out of the question, but the Red Sox are in Seattle :)

And then I'll be in Long Beach for WorldCon/LACon, too.

I've never been to Catalina, though I get the feeling it's not really my sort of place -- I'm not much of a beach person, as was obvious in Key West :)

Catalina...dunno, with my family it's more of a hang around and eat a lot place than a beach place, but that's probably just us...

Though probably not on March 17th if we're all going to Vegas on the 11th.
