No more sandwiches!
Dude, tonight I went to the gym, ostensibly with Megan and Heidi, but since I took a 20-minute nap when I got home from work first, I mostly missed Megan and I think we completely missed Heidi.
On the other hand, I lifted weights, and actually did my entire routine with all the normal weights. I cut down my reps on a few things to ease back in, but it mostly went well. I also did cardio for 10 minutes, but rather than trying to continue my running streak, I just went for running 2 minutes at a time and walking for a minute inbetween.
Then I came home and totally undid it by pigging out on sandwiches and chocolate-covered pretzels. I win!
I've been writing and PPing for the rest of the evening. Just discovered a certain local friend's been playing PP for the last few weeks and never told me, the scalawag. Go figure.

Dieting is a huge myth. Most diets throw your body into starvation mode, which is psychological torture. Even worse, as soon as you stop the diet, your body will store as much as possible in fat so as to better survive what it believes will be the next famine. It's very tough to keep weight off through dieting.
Drinking water also helps your body a ton, by helping with digestion and helping to flush things like preservatives or fat out of your system. It also helps improve your flexibility (assuming that you stretch sometimes, too).
Finally... weight is just a number. A lot of circus people will lose a ton of weight when they first start shedding fat and working out seriously. Then at a certain point, the number starts creeping back up, since they are gaining muscle density but don't have as much fat to shed. If you hit that point, you may notice that your clothes still fit; even if you are gaining weight, it's not unhealthy weight. Picking a number as an ideal weight is something of a myth for that reason, and it causes a lot of emotional trauma for people.
So in conclusion to Tony's minor essay on the myths of physical fitness: exercise, drink water, and don't pressure yourself about what you eat or what your specific weight number is. Unless you are using food as a salve for emotional distress (and I think that if you have a problem with eating, you'd know that already and talk about it differently), then the best thing to do is eat when you are hungry and pay attention to what your body is craving, and how much.

There's something to be said for knowing how much food is the right amount of food to keep your metabolism stoked (which, once I got a desk job, I learned was quite a bit less than I was actually eating), but otherwise, it's not worth obsessing about it too much.
And, if you're like me, I need to remember to eat a green leafy vegetable more often. Sweet sweet sugar is good, but vegetable matter is important. :)

This advice helped me personally more than just about anything else I ever learned about my health. When I started commuting by bicycle, I found myself drinking several extra pints of water per day, if only because I had my water bottle handy on the bike and in the office. Now that I've quit bicycling for the winter, I still try to keep a water glass on my desk as much as possible, and I can definitely tell when I'm not keeping up on my hydration.
Lucky for me, I like our city water, so I don't have to spend megabucks on little bottles of water from Bellefonte.

I don't think it was the sandwiches yesterday, it was more that I finished half a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels that I was worrying about :)

I saw Nishiguchi got a huge contract, too. Does that mean Matsuzaka's gonna step up like "If you want me to play, you have to pay me more than 300 million yen, suckers"?

I thought Japanese pitchers flee to escape overwork, not necessarily for the money?
