more Carnival - lounge BBQ, scepter, and mad mex

Carnival! Whee.

Today I got up because Carl was baking cookies for the lounge bbq. We ran late, and I went to campus ahead of him... I probly got to the bbq around 1:45pm. There were a ton of people there; trying to remember all of them would be pointless. Spent the next two hours or so hanging out with everyone. Shelby and Virginia were there with their adorable daughter Karina. (Virginia looks amazingly thin and pretty, I think I forgot to compliment her on that when I saw her.) The usual suspects, Robbins and Vince, were doing the grill thing. Roman called me and I passed my phone around to a whole bunch of people for like an hour so he could chat with everyone. There were some other people I hadn't seen in a long time, like Alisa Y, and Eugene, and Misha. And there were one or two current undergrads there, but not many (gwillen actually said something like "I don't know anyone here. I don't know you either, but at least I've talked to you more than most of the rest of these guys...") Oh, Andy Alford showed up with his girlfriend. That was pretty weird. Robbins had us all take a huge group picture up by the monument, holding up a sign saying "we love you mom" because his mom has cancer again. Doh. And at one point, Mark and I were going to set Benoit on fire and make a "benfire" as I called it -- we had him buried under a pretty good stack of kindling and twigs and leaves for a bit there.

Mark and I walked over to the KGB Defectors party in Breed Hall, which was showing the KGB movie when we got there. Afterwards I hung out for a bit talking to people; I saw [profile] lrstrobel and [profile] fiannaharpar and their daughter Lake; and Shawn was there of course; and various current KGB members; and [profile] fizzbang and [profile] mistergone. I bought a CTSWF t-shirt from current-treasurer-Emily who strikes me more like she should be a recording secretary. Oh, Becca-recca-secca and Dan were there, and they have a kid too. Everyone has kids. It's scary! I talked to bgilbert for a while and bought a KGB movie DVD from him so I can actually, like, watch the whole thing sometime... and then I left because I didn't know anyone else there. [profile] ayndin and I walked to the lounge from there.

In the lounge, I saw that [personal profile] rupes, [profile] dracai, babailey, and Carl Eastlund starting off a game of Das Scepter von Zavandor, and I was like "I wanna play!" Fortunately they were still going through the rules, so I grabbed a role (I was the artifacts track one). Carl M showed up shortly after that, and to have the oldskool Carl confusion, we got him to play as well. jgerman decided to back out and play cards with people instead, so we just had five of us playing, and Carl E was the only new player. I think Bryan started out with the "extra fairy dust income" track -- he always seemed to have a lot more money, and he got ahold of all the "extra gem" items, and took the lead early and never lost it. Adam started with the rubies track, and he did eventually get to the point of having tons of income through them, but maybe the curve was slow, since he ended up eventually third place, right behind me. Bryan won of course, and I was actually second -- I tended to stay in second or third place for most of the game by keeping my knowledge tracks in their penultimate state, and not buying an excessive number of artifacts or gems. I felt like I was skipping turns a lot to have enough money to do something the next round, but in general it worked out well, and I even had two waechters at the end; the raven for the items I had, and the tomcat instead of the unicorn, so I could downgrade diamonds to opals.

In the meantime there were a ton of other people around in the lounge playing card games; two tables of Mu, one of bridge, one of Tichu, at the peak of it all. People kept filtering out to go to dinner and stuff like that.

Mark and I left at 9:15 or so to head out to Mad Mex on McKnight, for [profile] rsbdeadman's birthday gathering (or maybe just the annual Asylum MadMexing, whatever). They had this problem with not reserving enough tables (the restaurant's fault, not ours), so we were originally at one of the circle tables and got moved to a long row of tables. I can actually remember everyone who was there - [profile] rsbdeadman, [personal profile] jgs, [profile] red_haired_girl, [profile] bk3c, [profile] bn29, [profile] zagthaar, es5f, [profile] vandebeast, mcelroy, Marnie, [profile] zyrain, [personal profile] cheerfulchaotic, rak, [profile] georgejas, [personal profile] dgr, me, [profile] mj2q... actually I think that's it unless I'm really blanking. We had lots of yummy Mad Mex food, and I drank a large size strawberry frozen margarita. And since I never ever drink alcohol anymore, I got pretty drunk off of it. (To be fair, the margarita is as tall as my head; this is a running gag year after year.) I was talking about D&D with Eric and Mark and Van and Chris for a while, but after eating food and getting all drunk-dizzy, and most people were moving around to talk, I just kinda went around saying things like "The margarita was THIS BIG!" making hand motions around my head and generally being silly. I really can't remember much else of what I said, though Neal commented that I am more amusing when drunk because I slow down enough that people can understand me.

Mark gave me a ride back here afterwards, which was nice of him.

I went and played in the Looterati recapturing of Jorvik blockade on PP after... I figured that as long as I was back here for it, I might as well help out. Carl hung out talking to me during most of it, which was nice, even when he fell asleep on the couch. In an ideal universe, someday I won't have to always play videogames alone.

Hmm, I wonder what I'll do today after pie party and before ToI. Maybe my phone's screen won't die and I'll be able to call people (like [profile] rkane, who I still haven't managed to catch). There is also apparently swing dancing at Wightman in the evening; hopefully my right ankle won't die (and hopefully I can get a ride there... hmm).

Baseball on Monday. Jenny ([profile] eiriene), I forgot to get your phone number off my computer before coming here, but I think I will want to leave campus around 5:30 to bus downtown for it... maybe meet up at the stadium at 6:20-6:30ish. (Monday, not Sunday. Arr.)

That's pretty spiffy about the sign. my aunt is just finishing up breast cancer treatments and they've got quite the celebrity collection of get well wishes. Just added Elvis Costello and... uh... Adrienne Barbeau :)

Best wishes for your friend's mom.
