More Carnival -- Kiltie and Hairspray
Well, I guess I'm still kinda sorta on west coast time. I got up at noon today... didn't get to campus until like 1:30pm. I grabbed food from Taste of India and went to the lounge (the computer science undergrad lounge, for my non-CMU friends). There, I ran into several old friends, including Eric K, and
rjmccall, and
klari, and gwillen, and Brian Olson, and
dracai and
mygrane and all. We sat around playing suicide spades for a while, and then Michael convinced us to play Mu, except by that point it was almost time for the Kiltie Band concert.
Wheeee Kiltie Band. I sat with two Brians, heh. They played the Holst Suite in F! There was some guy playing euphonium, I've been told he is "Dave Number 2", and he was amazing. I mean, they passed around the euphonium solo in the first movement of the suite, but oh my god, they shoulda just left it with Dave 2, because he was soooooo good. Dan Fernandez and Bob Rost appear to still be hogging all the clarinet solos. (Is that why that Jeremy kid moved to alto sax? He was really good too) It's always weird hearing the Kiltie pieces from the outside of the band instead of the inside. Whee. I said hi to a whole buncha Kiltie people after the concert, and I wandered around the booths a little, and then bolson and I walked back to the CS Lounge. Unfortunately people were all already involved in games, so I decided to wander Wean a bit.
I went by Mark Stehlik's office. He was talking to someone. He suggested I put my name down for a 15-minute advising slot on Monday or Tuesday. I almost did. I still might :)
I went downstairs and I ran into
jcreed! Wheeeee! That cheered me up so much. Jason said something to me like "You know, a lot of people come to Carnival, and I don't get to see some of them, and I think you're the person I'd be saddest about not seeing if I didn't see you." I think that's the nicest thing anyone's said to me in like... forever. Anyway, we sat around talking for like two hours, and I met some other grad students who walked by, and we talked about puzzles, and everything, and Jason's just like my super-smart awesome little brother that I never had or something.
And then when I finally noticed what time it was, and got up to go to the stairs to go back to the lounge, I turned around and walked right into Trey Smith :) It's so awesome to run into lots of great friends all over the place randomly. I love CMU.
I went upstairs, and found Carl, and we ran over to the bus stop to take a bus downtown to the Benedum. (We ran into Zarf at the bus stop, and I am wearing my KGB Buggy 1995 shirt, the last one he designed.) On the bus downtown, I ran into Dave McWherter, who is teaching swing classes these days, and told me to come to Wightman on Sunday, so I will try my best to do that, though I hear that is ToI dinner night too. It should be ok to do both though. Anyway, we got to the Benedum reasonably on time, even beating
mrpeck there. We were seeing a production of the musical Hairspray.
It was pretty good -- I am largely unfamiliar with it aside from Seattle's claim to fame on it since it premiered there. The dancing and set and lighting were all really neat, although I'm not sure the plot of the musical makes much sense to me (it seems to be centered on some cross between "fat people are beautiful, and racists suck"). We were sitting in the upper balcony, so we had a good view of the overall blocking and all, but it was hard to see specific details on a lot of the actors. The hairspray theme itself kind of disturbed me though, especially the crazy wigs. It was still pretty funny and it was nice to go see a musical with a bunch of people. (Thanks, Carl!)
Afterwards, Mike gave us a ride back to Oakland. It was 11pm and we hadn't had dinner, so I thought we'd get halfprice food somewhere, but we called the lounge and Kevin convinced us to grab food and come there instead. So we got stuff from the pizza place that's where Subway used to be (and it wasn't very good), and went to the lounge. Carl and I ended up in a game of spades with
dracai and
platypuslord, while the other table had
zaph,
buoren,
rupes, and
lqiu playing bridge. My gosh, it was just cool to be in a room full of people playing card games and goofing off again :)
Carl wanted to walk back here so he could go to bed and get up on time for work, and I didn't want to walk back alone later, so I came back with him. We stayed up talking for a bit, but not too horribly late -- I'm up an hour or two more, writing this and catching up on webstuff, and my general sleep habit -- because to me it's 1am even if it's 4am here. I really hope I wake up for Mobot tomorrow :( I'm gonna set my cellphone to buzz at 11am, hopefully I'll make it to campus by noon at that rate, if I actually wake up from it.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
