A Rant

I made the mistake of reading some of the "arguments" over N'Sync being in Star Wars. (I blame Wil Wheaton.) It pisses me off a lot. No, not N'Sync being in Star Wars, but the pettiness of Star Wars fans on the net. And I haven't ranted in a while.

You know how all of these Star Wars fans have gotten up in such a rut and with the power of complaining, have supposedly gotten N'Sync to not appear in the Star Trek II movie? I think that's one of the stupidest things ever.

Great, geeks, you have finally managed to bully some of the popular kids out of having fun. I'm so proud of you.

Why should it matter whether or not they appear in the movie? Heck, I bet if this rumour hadn't gotten into the media, nobody would have noticed or cared that they were in the movie at all. I mean, let's face it, how many extras do you really notice anyway? For all we know, the Bee Gees and John Travolta were extras in the original Star Wars as death troopers, and how would you even know that, since they were always wearing masks?

I wouldn't recognize N'Sync if I saw them on the street (or for that matter if I heard them on the radio), so how on earth would I recognize them among a whole bunch of extras on the screen in a Star Wars movie? How would that honestly change my viewing experience any, to be looking out for a few piddly extras with no parts in the plot? If people were seriously going to watch the movie and have their experience ruined by the fact that N'Sync was in it, I would greatly question whether one should listen to them at all as a movie critic or even as a sane person, because they've definitely got their priorities fucked up.

And I mean, gosh, wow, famous people ending up in a big motion picture just because they're famous. We all know that *that* never happens... stars never ever get cameos just for being stars. Only qualified reviewed real "actors" can appear on the screen.

Look, I don't listen to pop music, and don't really care about boy bands or girl bands or anything. I'm infact even looking forward to seeing Mandy Moore butcher A Walk To Remember, which was a great book and looks like a teenybopper movie. Will that stop me from going to see it? No. Should it? No. Would it be any better if they cast some random teen actress instead of a pop singer actress? Probably not.

If the fans really wanted to be productive, couldn't they just organize a boycott of the movie until George Lucas agrees to get rid of Jar Jar Binks? That would make a much more noticeable difference than bullying a few pop star extras off the set.

After all, that's the real issue everyone keeps bringing up: Exactly how much will this movie suck? But I guess the Star Wars fans who will like it even if it sucks, sort of like nattou, would rather nitpick than find something better to do with their time.

Usually I would end a rant like this with a line like "...and I bet you didn't even notice Britney Spears's cameo in Lord of the Rings as a beautiful hobbit maiden," but...

Come on, talking about productivity with regard to movies is silly. Movies are meant to be an entertaining waste of time. On the other hand, there is a valid point to be made, which is that Lucas may be sacrificing his art for the sake of a buck (in the form of endorsements or increasing the size of the audience of the movie). The preemptive bitching is invariably stupid in form, but at least it lets Lucas know that tampering with his movie may negatively affect the fan bracket. But as you astutely observed, the fans will probably eat it up no matter what he does. So ultimately all of this bitching is just a waste of time, but it's part of the obsessed fan experience. But perhaps any bitching about the movie may not be philosophically justifiable. Making claims about what the movie should be is really trying to assert what Lucas "would want" for the movie in a Platonic ideal sense versus what he wants to do to the movie as evidenced by his actions. This is sketchy business, because ultimately the movie is defined to be whatever Lucas produces, and I doubt he is being forced to do anything. And to come full circle, typing this paragraph accomplished precisely nothing, but it's part of the obsessed LiveJournal reader experience.

You know, you might get out of this trap if you gnaw your brain off.
