I smell like smoke.
Yeah, so today I had the concert adventure. I left my apartment at 6:30ish and bussed to Fremont, where I had kaitensushi at Blue C. Mmmm sushi. Then I took the 26 bus from there to the Crocodile Cafe. I arrived around 8:15 and fortunately all the people I knew were there already -- Wooko's ponytail was readily recognizable so I went over and stood with him and Jeff and Eric and Chris and Ro and Alan and Stuph and a whole buncha people I don't know the names of. I saw CorranFox come in and talked to him a bit (and I saw DJ there on my way out at the end of the evening). Chris and I sat there trying to decipher the Pillows shirt which had all this katakana on the front. Eventually I figured out that reading it vertically, after the first few characters it started making sense - "boku no yume" etc etc.
The show stuff started at 9-9:30ish. We all went in and found spots to stand somewhat near the back of the place. The Crocodile has these poles up in the middle of the room, so Wooko and I both stood leaning against one of them, and Jeff and Eric were back there too, and Ro and Emi. Man, my legs started to hurt like hell after a while. We spent the time before the music started talking about movies and stuff. I mentioned I'd watched Ghostbusters recently and that got us all started on what Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd did afterwards. It's funny since both Wooko and I had brought books to read but neither of us had decks of cards with us to waste time with. Whee.
Let's see, there were four acts. First was Tomo and Kelly, who were basically two people and a guitar. They sang some nice music, but it was pretty boring overall. The second act was the Noodles. They're basically three chicks from Japan playing punk-ish music. They had a lot of energy and their music was pretty good. Their Engrish was pretty amusing, of course -- like "I like Seattle! This is, Seattle, second time. The coffee is delicious! But I don't like salmon!" And the drummer chick like "We are sell t-shirts! Please buy our CDs, and t-shirts."
After that was Stereo Future, who are a local band. The guitarist is actually the guy in charge of this Beat2Beat thing for promoting american artists playing in Japan and Japanese artists playing in America. However, I sort of thought the Stereo Future band themselves were kinda boring to be honest, so I went outside and sat in the cafe area. My feet were killing me and I really just wanted to sit down. I saw Eric at a table and sat there with him and the two other people I didn't know (Rick and Lance, apparently), and Jeff joined us after a while. The singer and the drummer from the Noodles were sitting at the table right next to ours. People kept asking to take their picture with them. There was this one guy who was like a foot or two taller than the girls and he had this picture with him making a really leery look, and putting an arm around each of them. Whee.
The Pillows finally took the stage at like 11:30pm. They played for like an hour or so. Now, keep in mind I have not seen FLCL -- apparently they played all of their songs from it -- but, they were pretty rockin'. Lots of energy, good stage presence, really good music. Also amusing Engrish of course ("More near! More near!" the singer cried at the beginning, waving people to come towards the stage. And later on he kept saying "I. want. To see your. CRAZY DANCE!")
I ended up buying the non-FLCL Pillows CD. I'm not sure they played much if anything from it, but it's pretty good. Maybe I shoulda gotten a Noodles CD too. Oh well. All in all, it was a pretty decent night of music for only $6, seriously. I can't quite figure out how they can pay four bands on $6 cover with only like 200-300 people there, tops.
Jeff gave me a ride home. I smell like smoke.

Ride on Shooting Star
Re: Ride on Shooting Star
The Pillows had sorta cute t-shirts, I'm sure you can ask someone going to ACEN to get you one. One had a skull made up of kittycats, and another was this big weird mess of katakana (but in a cool looking way). I dunno.

I can't believe this...but it was 21+ anyways.
*sigh* Hope they're coming back soon, and hopefully to an all ages or 18+ venue.

I can't recommend seeing it. It lacked coherency but wasn't good enough at zaniness to make up for it.
But, I also was ignoring the music. If you don't and like it, YMMV. :)
