I nuked my website!

I dunno. It's mostly the pictures. I'm so sick of people on the net just taking pictures from my page and doing nasty things to them.

So I basically tar/gz'ed my entire site, downloaded it to my home computer, burned it to a CD, and then rm -rf'ed the directory on the machine it's hosted from.

I'm slowly adding some things back, like quotefile, resume, PP page, whatnot. I don't think I'm going to put many if any of the Bemani things back. The DDR cosplay is DEFINITELY not coming back. Maybe I'll update the Hasegawa page. At least you can't really do much with something like that.

But, yeah. It felt really good to nuke it. Nuke nuke!

I can put that back if you want. Most of the PGSS pictures and stuff were on kmathers's page actually anyway. I didn't actually have the PGSS page linked from my main page anymore anyway...

I know exactly how you feel. For years I've had to deal with idiots on web forums linking to my pictures -- not always in a bad way, but often enough to irritate me. I put in .htaccess files to stop folks from linking to my photos directly, and that seemed to fix the problem.

There are a lot of folks out there on the 'net who have made a culture out of incessantly mocking other people. I know how you feel, but there's really no way to deal with stupid people on the net otherwise.

Hm, the .htaccess woulda been smart. Instead I would just move pictures out from under people when I found them directly linked. Not as effective.

I hate Something Awful and the like. What makes me sadder is how nobody wants to have pictures or anything cool up any more because it's so likely that someone will do something nasty to the pictures.

weird. it's got to be some kind of spring cleaning thing. i just did the same thing to mine. changed the url, deleted tons of stuff. it felt good.

You know, it's funny actually.
I read your entry where you said you nuked your site and thought to myself, "Maybe I really ought to do that already. I never update it much, and all I get out of it is job recruiters contacting me, 19-year-old idiots IMming me about DDR, and assholes stealing pictures of people from my site and photoshopping or otherwise doing mean/humiliating stuff."

An hour later, an acquaintance sends me an IM like "Hey Deanna... is this you?" with a URL to a random site where someone's making fun of DDR players, and it has a picture of me playing DDR.

Three hours later: site nuked.

Hmmm, I was looking for some of the Japan pictures a while back, and had been wondering.
I forget why--I think I was describing something there to someone and wanted a visual aid.

Unfortunately, web.archive.org still has some of your DDR cosplay pictures. You can get them removed though:

"While we collect publicly available Internet documents, sometimes authors and publishers express a desire for their documents not to be included in the Collections (by tagging a file for robot exclusion or by contacting us or the original crawler group). If the author or publisher of some part of the Archive does not want his or her work in our Collections, then we may remove that portion of the Collections without notice."

Does web.archive.org show up when people do a google search for DDR pictures?

I think what bugs me more is that someone does a search for "ddr cosplay" to look for pictures to mock and BOOM my pages show up.

Screw that, I'm not making it easy for them anymore.

Hmm, I didn't know people were mocking you and your pictures (from your (now defunct) site). I always knew I was a huge open target for people that wanted any sort of source material to mock anything DDR-wise, but just didn't (and still don't) care.

However, your piece of mind is very important, and if this incesstant mockery is a source of stress and anxiety, then you should deal with the problem in whatever means you deem appropriate.

Thanks for your website, though. I liked the pictures of you playing random Bemani. Heh, it doesn't seem like so long ago you were at Muthos.

I guess you never saw the DDR Cosplay page? I had this huge page full of pictures of people dressed up as DDR characters, that I'd collected for a few years. It was actually pretty damn cool for a while and I used to get emails all the time from cosplayers and DDR players telling me how awesome it was, how they'd looked at my site to find other people's costumes to get inspiration for their own, etc, etc. I think the page had like 40,000 hits by the time I took it down.

Then out of nowhere, all the sites that like to make fun of cosplayers and DDR players suddenly started grabbing all the pictures from my site and putting them up on theirs like "Look at these pathetic losers ha ha ha." And worse, usually they were grabbing pictures of ME, which resulted in a lot of friends recently sending me IMs of "Hey Deanna, is this you?" with a link to some site dissing DDR players and a picture of me dressed up as Emi or Alice or something. Which seems to be all it was feeding anymore; I don't think people are that interested in dressing as DDR characters anymore.

So, eh. And I'm not particularly into cosplay anymore, and I don't even play DDR that much anymore either.

I'll probly be putting some of my pictures back up -- but I'm probably going to look over sets of them first to think, "Is this worth mocking?" before anything goes up... and probably try to stay away from any unflattering pictures of people at all. Or something.

My gosh, has it been almost a year since I was last in Japan? It doesn't feel that long. I really want to go back. I wonder if maybe I should start trying to look for jobs there. Is it a tough market these days, do you think?

:-( To me, that smacks of letting the intolerant scum win. The world is poorer for your deletion.

That said, it is extremely understandable from your position, and well done you for having had the spark and vitality and cojones to put them up in the first place; please don't let the intolerant scum let you off sharing similarly imaginitive fun in the future.

Stretching to see a positive sheen here, I guess we live in an improving world when the majority of the intolerant scum have moved on, to the extent they have, from picking on large minorities like people of colour and non-heterosexuals, and have moved on to small minorities like cosplayers, furries and LRPers...

Yeah, I am still going through figuring out which things to put back up. My computer starting to slowly die kind of got in the way of the process, though.

I guess I've just been getting slowly more and more fed up with stuff. It makes me sad. I remember when you could just have pictures up with no risk, and share your life with the world. But, ah well. What makes me sad is how nobody else wants to have pictures up anymore either, for the same reason.
