Austin, day 2... more games, heh

Nick left his cellphone out here in the living room when he went to sleep yesterday, so it woke me up this morning, but I of course didn't really do anything about it. It was [profile] zml once and [profile] sheenaqotj once, both saying "dude! let's get lunch, where's Dee?" or something. So when we were awake around noon we called them and [personal profile] rupes and [personal profile] rehana and all made plans to go to Chuy's for lunch. CHUY'S! WHEEEEE! So yeah. Sheena and Zach came over here and picked up me and Nick and we met up with Adam and Rehana at Chuy's (the Lamar one, I think). It was crowded but somehow we did get in there in enough time for Sheena to make her ultimate frisbee game. And we had lots of yummy mexican food. I love Chuy's.

Then uh, everyone but Sheena went back to Adam and Rehana's apartment, which is where we were for the rest of the day. First the five of us played a bunch of Mu (the card game with triangles), and then Zach had to talk on a conference call, so the four remaining of us played Tichu for a while. Then Zach came back in and Rehana ducked out for us to play a game of Princes of Florence, which IIRC Adam soundly walloped everyone on by basically getting a bunch of jesters and a few assorted freedoms/landscapes and then just reeling out 6 works at the end for like 10 points each. I'd actually played my cards and my hand pretty optimally, actually, but I still only came in second. I dunno.

Then we decided to play the Scepter of Zavandor game again. Zach has played Outpost, so it didn't take him too long to pick up on how this game worked. This time, Adam played the rubies character, I was the witch (starts on cheaper gem track), Zach was the character that starts on the cheap artifact track, and Nick had Adam's character from last time, the one that starts out initially with a lot more money. Ironically, Nick did EXACTLY what Adam did in yesterday's game -- he bought a TON of emeralds, and won eventually. Adam had a ton of money with the Rubies and he came in second place, although I could have done kingmaking and made them tie, if I'd bought the cloak of charisma at the end, which would have blown up one of Nick's emeralds, but Adam had an opal to sacrifice. I came in third I think, because I got two of the sentinels at the end and optimized one, but... still, eh. I'm not sure I really understand what to do early on in the game to play well. I think that's my problem. I fall behind and can't catch up. Maybe I shouldn't have gone for emeralds at all...

Anyway, after that game we ate leftover tacos, and Zach went home, and Adam taught me how to play San Juan (yes, despite all my Puerto Rico experience I had never played SJ). So he and Nick and I played it, and we finished pretty close, Adam had 37, I had 35, Nick had 29. I think it's neat, I'd play it again, even though I'm not sure I have the game figured out exactly.

I can't wait for Carl to get here, we're just going to play so many games!

Nick and I stayed up too late talking again. I have the pictures on my laptop from my last Austin trip a year and a half ago, so I showed them to him. It's a shame I don't really take many pictures anymore or really post them on the web - I just got so sick of what people do with pictures when they're public and it's such a pain to make them private (but make sure the right people get access). So, bleh.

It sounds like tomorrow evening we'll be going to see some christmas lights with Sheena, and maybe Tuesday night we'll go see Ocean's Twelve with Zach, and maybe Wednesday afternoon meet up with Ralph and Lori for barbecue, although it's unclear on exact plans there. Thursday night is either swing dancing or board games. No idea on what we're actually doing on Friday for new year's eve, but Brad and Carl will be here by then. Woohoo!

[personal profile] arya, this list is mostly for your benefit so you vaguely know what I'm up to. None of our plans are really set in stone. And during the days it's just hanging out, maybe playing more board games or watching movies, or if I feel better we could go play DDR, or whatever... hm, maybe after Brad gets back I can seek out the Bemani folks in general.

(Oh, and crap, I need to visit Jason and Julie one of these days! Argh!)

Sickness update: Didn't take any dayquil today. Survived for the most part. Coughed up a lot more phlegm but I guess that's to be expected when I'm not totally drying out my sinuses with decongestants. So, still sick. Oh well.

If you're coughing up coloured bits of phlegm then you're not contagious anymore. Whee!

Board games?
