baseball babbling
My gosh, a lot of baseball people were busy when I went away for a week!
Jason Kendall traded to the A's. I guess Bayani was right. On the other hand, we'll get to see him more up here! On the other hand... crap, that means I can't entirely hate the A's. Grumble.
Gabe Kapler is going to go play for the Yomiuri Giants next year. Holy crap! This is kind of odd though. He'll be playing center field, apparently, with Yoshinobu Takahashi in right, and in theory, Tuffy Rhodes in left. I guess the real question is where the heck Takayuki Shimizu is going to... it'd be odd to take him out of a regular starting job, I think, since he's a pretty consistently good player. I wonder what the deal is with Petagine and Kiyohara is (maybe they'd move Shimizu to first? Who knows). I can't imagine Kiyohara will retire with 492 career home runs. He's only 37, he could step in as a DH somewhere easily for a few more years.
A lot of Japanese free agents are interested in the MLB and a bunch of others want to be posted. IMO, very few if any will move over here this year, and that's how it should be. I am guessing Tadahito Iguchi (from the Hawks) will definitely come over, as a 2nd baseman or shortstop somewhere. That's about it. Toshihisa Nishi of the Giants may also, but I'm kind of guessing not. Well, and Kenji Jojima would do great, but there's no way in hell the Hawks will post him.
Hiram Bocachica is apparently in the A's minor league system now which pisses me off to NO END because you know that despite Jason Kendall, I still hate the A's, and it sucks a lot to see Bocachica go there. He's such a damn good fielder... I guess maybe it'll be good to see what he can do as a right-handed hitter in a park that isn't as mean as Safeco, but still. Sigh. The people at hirambocachica.com seem vaguely happy about it though, so ah well.
I think this happened before I left town, but Troy Percival will now be playing in Detroit. Sigh. I guess it means that I can't skip seeing Detroit when they come to town this year like I did last year. He's still one of my favorite closers out there, even without being set up by Brendan Donnelly. It'll be interesting to see how Detroit does this year, honestly -- the Mariners could probably take a few tips from them given their rebound from their awful 2003 season.
And on a final note, Nintendo of America now owns a majority of the Mariners instead of Hiroshi Yamauchi. That's kinda wacky.
What else have I missed in the last week? I feel sort of like I don't necessarily have the whole story on a lot of stuff I would normally.

Well, at least Pirates tickets will still be affordable this year.

I don't even know who our backup catcher is since Keith Osik went to the Brewers. I think Craig Wilson did a few games as backstop. But then again, Hack will show up anywhere in the lineup you ask him to; he's pretty cool that way.
