more pittsburgh adventures

A whole day (from 10am until 1am) without actually being at a real computer to read email or LJ or whatnot. (I could see email from my phone, that was about it, and IM.)

So, first was the car adventure. Got up at 9:30, ran outside to move the car since I thought I was in 2 hour parking starting 8am (but infact was in 1 hour parking. I guess I lucked out). Moved the car. Came back in, got showered and changed, did PP admin stuff, went back out within an hour. Went to campus to shop at the University Shoppe. There actually wasn't much there that appealed to me for once. I did get a t-shirt that's a spoof of the "got milk?" or whatever shirt that says "got plaid?" with the CMU lettermark under it.

I headed down to the South Side, to MayaViz, where I met up with Carl, and then went into the office and saw a ton of random people I know that I haven't seen in a while. Though only Monica, John, Sam, and Carl came to lunch with me. Anu (er, Anukul) and Nat (er, Nathaniel) and Steve and Sharon and everyone else were too busy with some super-secret project they are all on. It was still good to see them for a few seconds. (I vaguely wondered where [profile] sui66iy was, but Carl didn't actually know where he sat to go look for him). Raar. Anyway, we did go get lunch at the City Grill and it was fun. Our waitress was Val, who used to teach the level 2 and 3 classes at the CMU Ballroom Dance Club. Sam (being Sam Kass, who was a lot more "in" with the BDC than I ever was) recognized her and they talked a lot. It was pretty weird.

After that I had to find a way to waste the day until Carl got out of work. I went to campus (took like 20 mins to find a parking space, my god it's a nightmare) and talked to Mark Stehlik for 10 minutes or whatever it was until he had to go to nine billion meetings (crap, I need to remember to email him), and then I went to the CS Lounge to hang out a bit. Talked to [profile] cdinwood for a bit, and Abe, and some other people who were around who of course I have forgotten the names of because I suck. So, yeah. Loungeness. Then I got bored and wandered off, but I didn't really know where I was going, so I ended up in the UC. I played Medieval Madness for about 45 minutes, on one dollar (or two credits). Got four replays and one matched number. I looooove MM, and the replay was set CRAZY low (like 9 million). By that point it was time for KGB.

I went to the KGB meeting, didn't really know what to expect, since I don't know much of the main membership now. Shawn skipped the meeting and infact the only other alumni there were [profile] fizzbang who had just gotten back from Seattle, ironically, and [personal profile] whitemage who I temporarily again forgot had moved away. (Wait, is bgilbert alumni?) I sat with Fred sort of in the semi-back of the room, read the Tartan, and occasionally said random comments (like suggesting Space Station Mir as a booth theme to go with "Inventions / How Things Work"). I forgot about the whole penny-throwing thing, unfortunately, but fortunately, I had some spare nickels, dimes, and Sunnyvale Golfland arcade tokens in my bag, so I threw a combination of all three. As the SVGL tokens are somewhat useless, one was given to Creidieki as a substitute nickel of fault. Whee. Abe called me and Fred "Old Business", and I yelled back "How old I am is none of your business," but I don't think he heard me. Ah well. Either way, the meeting seemed pretty much as I remember KGB meetings except now I don't really know who anyone is. Wait, there is one main change. The organization seems to take in 10-15 bucks a week from selling off new committees. It's somewhat to the point that I actually felt no need to go up and pay dues to help support the organization with my ten bucks, because I realized they don't need it. Scary.

Wandered campus more after that. Walked back to Wean with Dan. Knocked on Kevin and Benoit's door but they had apparently already left for the day. Went looking for Jason Reed, but his officemate, who is apparently also a Jason, had seen no sign of him and suggested the UC. Went past the CS grad lounge, didn't recognize anyone. Went to the UC... ran into Mark Tomczak and talked a bit. Then I was gonna call people, but I sat down and actually [personal profile] ancilla came up to me and I hadn't recognized her, but that was pretty cool and we chatted a bit (but I'm lazy so I didn't want to play Squash with her). At that point I got in touch with Kevin and Carl and I ended up going over to the Beeler House. (I couldn't start the damn rental car -- I'd parked on a hill and turned the steering wheel and I called Kevin like "omfg I'm STUCK" but he told me to try turning the wheel the other way and it worked, whew) Saw dkitch and creidieki cleaning the house, then got Kevin, then called Carl, who was hopping on a bus to go to Taste of India. So Kevin and I chatted a bit, then got going (and since Christina had called down "HI DEE AND KEVIN" I yelled back up "HI CHRISTINA DINWOODIE WANNA GO TO TASTE OF INDIA WITH US?" and she yelled back "OKAAAAY", so we got a Christina too).

Taste of India was cool :) The owner was there and he gave us free appetizers, and then he started writing down Carl's order as navratan curry, but Christina and Carl were splitting something else, which was pretty funny. I got my usual tikka masala and naaan and it was yummmmy. And the mango lassi was really good too, more like I am used to... I guess since ToI is where I first started eating Indian food it only figures that everything there tastes more right than elsewhere.

Came back to Beeler, where Kevin and Carl and I played Settlers of Catan Cities & Knights, for the first time in AGES. It was fun. I won. That's not why it was fun though. We hung out for a while. I left the car on Beeler and Carl and I walked back to Amberson. I kept trying to not talk about PP. I wish it didn't keep creeping into the convo, since both of us are getting kind of unenthused about the game. I actually had other important stuff to talk to Carl about, but we were tired, so ah well. Tomorrow morning/afternoon he's off to the airport to go home...

...which is the point at which my week is going to get weird. But one way or the other I should be okay for somewhere to stay. I may end up staying here at Carl's anyway and giving his keys to Kevin when I leave town... or I might crash at the Beeler House couch... or maybe I'll bug Benoit if I find him... but I still want to see Jensen-like people... aiiieeeee... well, I'll be figuring it out in the morning. For now I'm going to briefly check on PP and then go to sleep. I'm sure I'll be nagging people to hang out tomorrow. (I wish I had more Asylum people phone numbers, I'd love to see Chris and George and Neal and Bryan and anyone else who is around too! Maybe Mad Mex today or tomorrow night? Maybe I'll bug Barbara tomorrow? Aieeee.)

I'm in Cyh 207, along the front hallway (look out for the watch-secretaries). I've got lunch free today, and tonight I'll need to see what my family is up to. [livejournal.com profile] katybeth and [livejournal.com profile] sethml are staying with me, and probably going to see a movie sometime. I also live wicked close to CMU nowadays, so I could have people over to play games or something.

Sorry. I didn't actually see the MeetingMaker invite until too late. I was in meetings anyway...

Damn, the Mad Mex reference is making my mouth water, and I'm a gazillion miles away.
