decent weekend, lots of stuff to do.

Quite a weekend. Funny how I thought I wasn't writing because I had nothing to write about, but I have stuff to write about now and I'm still not writing.

Friday, some good things happened at work. First, they had a beer night so everyone disappeared at 5pm and I could work in peace. Second, they decided not to do the code release that I've been busting my braincells for all week. (We weren't ready.) Third, my boss is on vacation for a week. Well, maybe that's not good. I do have plenty of things to work on though, so it should be okay.

After work, I went downtown and picked up Alex from his hotel. He was going to crash at Eli's that night, but Eli was out square dancing. So, I took Alex to Blue C Sushi, where he proceeded to impress me with the amount of sushi he can actually pack away. (He's a smaller person than I am, so logically I don't think he can eat more than me.) I did Blue C a favor and pointed out all the goodies like amaebi and spider rolls, too. We talked and talked and talked, and then walked around Fremont and adjourned to Coldstone to eat yummy ice cream and talk some more. I guess since Alex doesn't have an LJ and I'm not on zephyr anymore, there really was a lot to catch up on. It'd be cool if he came out to work at MSR, then maybe we'd get Wednesday dinner group going again or something.

Eventually Eli got home and we went over there. I hung out a bit and then came home, ostensibly to sleep, but instead ended up on PP for a few hours. Sigh.

Saturday was a Day of Slack. I picked up Alex and Eli and we went to Todai for lunch with Megan, Josh, Heidi, Cory, and Justin. (Justin is celebrating his week of slack after dropping Colleen and Zak off at the airport.) We were joined by Ficus and Katie, and Mike and Chi (?) to see The Incredibles after lunch. It was a pretty fun movie. I liked the bit with the capes. The animation was really pretty good, and it was an overall fun movie, with a nice balance of kid humor and adult humor, I thought. Plus, several CMU professors and alumni were listed in the credits. Yay Pixar.

Came back to the House of Slack after that, and played board games. Josh, Justin, Cory, Alex, Eli and I played Medici (I think Cory won with like 99 points), and then Bang (the outlaws won - Josh was the sheriff and I was a deputy. The funny moment was Josh intentionally setting off my dynamite on Alex because he could choose the next card to be drawn), and then Heidi and Megan arrived so we did dinner-ish plans and split up into two groups. Justin and Cory and Alex and I played Puerto Rico. Alex had never played before, but I think he had fun. I screwed up a lot, but had 3 large buildings in the end for 55 points total. Justin won with 70ish though. By that point it was late and I had to drive Alex to the airport, so I did. Whee. I guess I'll see him again at CMU in a few days anyway. Went home after that. Played PP for whatever reason.

Sunday was a day of less slack. Kinda. I woke up, logged in to PP to check stuff, and left my crew in anger, after having yet another argument with Kuibbles. But now all of a sudden he and I are talking like best friends again. Almost like it took a slap in the face to make both of us stop acting like idiots. Still, I think I'm gonna be on a leave of absence from CN/LP for a bit. I turned down the tailor/weavery position on Luthien officially - I don't really want to end up with more game time commitments and responsibility.

Went downtown. Stopped by Kinokuniya to get some Japanese baseball magazines. The lady at the counter saw them and started talking to me in Japanese about baseball (she said she was from Nagoya and had been rooting for Chunichi) but because I suck, I broke down and started talking in English, explaining that Seibu won the series blah blah. I really should go find a decent way to relearn/practice Japanese conversation.

Met up with Michael at the Loews theater, a bit later than I would have liked because I got stuck in the one-way traffic loop and then had trouble finding parking. We saw the new Bridget Jones movie. It was really good and really funny and I greatly enjoyed it. (Although I wonder if part of why I enjoy the Bridget Jones movies is because I can empathize so well with her.) After that we walked around downtown a bit before deciding to get dinner at the mexican restaurant on the top of Pacific Place, which was decent, and NOW I know where that fire I always see reflected at Todai comes from! We got fajitas, which I guess was good because at least it meant *both* of us would be making a total mess of food, and I didn't have to feel so self-conscious. Chatted for a while. Fun stuff. At the restaurant, they "show" you dessert by bringing out a plate, which more has the effect of making me think "Oh my god, I am so full" rather than "Huh, dessert looks good."

I stopped in Barnes and Noble (got a magazine/book about the 2004 world series and read a chunk of a book about perfect games), then headed home, where I proceeded to do laundry and play PP. I am finally done laundry, so I should sleep. Great start to the week, eh?

That's traditional in some establishments in France (mostly in hotels, come to think of it). They bring out the dessert and cheese cart, and then try to make them all sound appealing. When it's desserts that vastly differ from each other (crême caramel, île flottante, various pastries, cheese plate) it makes sense, especially for stupid american tourists who have no idea what anything is. I've never understood the point of having a large display case full of identical-looking pies though.

I guess dim sum is the same way too.
